When Ivo Fortesque had come to Nova Terreli, Joaquin Seramon Fontonajo took his chance and joined the expedition. Joaquin had always been the most eager adventurer and explorer of the Fontonajo family. While his uncle had been a great sailor, captain and fighter, Joaquin always strived for new things. This trip was his chance. Being on one of the minor vessels in the following of Ivo Fortesque, Joauin Seramon Fontonajo and his comapnions landed a bit off the place where Fortesque had landed. Not a man of doubt or hesitation Joaquin quickly entered the dense jungles of the island to explore it himself. After a while he saw a small lake shining through the thicket, and he followed the reflections of the water for some refreshment. And this is where he first saw her... ---- Quite a hard challenge to build on such a small scale. It took me several attempts to get the layout the way I wanted it to be. Some more pictures from some other angles etc. can be found on flickr. Good luck to everyone in this challenge.

[ESL-FB] Cotton Plantation in Nova Terreli
Elostirion replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Why didn't I think of that? Gave it a quick try and it worked out quite well. Not that I had nearly enough of those white 1x1 round plates, but there is bricklink after all... -
[ESL-FB] Cotton Plantation in Nova Terreli
Elostirion replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks for the kind words. About using white flowers: I played around quite a lot before getting started and gave my cotton plants various tries with other white and brown elements I had, but basically everything I built was too clumpy, too big and did not look like cotton at all. While the white flowers are not perfect (especially with the green in it, brown grass stems would have worked a lot better, but buying them for like 3€ a piece at bricklink... no thanks), I think they were the best I could do - however I am looking forward to other people's attempts at cotton plants in this game. :-) What I also tried was putting two petals on one flower stem (the lower turned around and the upper the right way), to make them look more like a ball and a bit thicker. While you could not really fix them, it would at least have been possible to losely lay them on top after all was done, but I quite ran out of white flower petals at the end. Anyways, thanks for the kind words, I am looking forward to other cotton plantations and also to people utilizing the Fontonajo cotton in their factories or trade. :-) -
Really nice build. My favourite parts is how you did the floor (it really looks like torn out of an actual room) and the ceiling, but that "torch" and the chimney are great too. The windows work perfectly and give a nice touch of the ocean nearby. I like it a lot.

Since their arrival in the new world the Fontonajo family has found their home in and around the settlement of Nova Terreli on the island of Nellisa. The Fontonajo's played a big role in the MCTC's effort to gain the monopoly on cotton and still make a very good annual income from their cotton plantations to this very day. Not far off the town of Nova Terreli you can find one of their major cotton plantations, where plants are grown in a set pattern of rows - Corrington science can be a great help, even for agriculture. A small hut provides space for storage, for tools and chests especially. In harvest season additional workers are hired on the fields, but the men of the family themselves take care of things. Juan Alfonso Fontonajo, the eldest son of Román Esteban Fontonajo, is inspecting the workers at the Fontonajo Cotton Plantation in the hinterland of Nova Terreli. It's harvest-season, and as one of the major sources of income of the family, a successfull cotton-harvest is critical to their advantage in the new world. The cotton is stored in big chests and then transported to the factories in the town of Nova Terreli. Fieldworkers are harvesting the cotton and carrying big bags around all day. As the heir of the Fontonajo family Juan Alfonso is eager to inspect the workers. Harvesting cotton all day is no easy business, many workers, though decently paid by the family, show grim faces. Looking at the fields from the top (just like the eagle flies) clearly shows the use of Corrington's scientific insight into aggriculture. -------- I hope you guys like this build. It was quite some effort (also about photography with decent lighting in front of a bluescreen and then some postproduction; looking forward to master Gideon's feedback on that one) but also huge fun building it, I guess I might do further plantations in the future... Also credit to Simon_S for his sugar cane plantation which definitely inspired me to start this building. Looking forward to some feedback, and have a nice evening everyone.

Sea Rats: Sign-up and Discussion

@Ron701: I really like both your sigfig's style and the small MOC dedicated to it. Favourite part is the parts of dark tan in the white wall, looks very authentic to me! -
COR - CHII - CatA The Stockade

This really captures the feeling of the challenge very nice. As others have already stated the fort really looks freshly constructed, I like it! What I would suggest next time is to make the terrain slightly ascending from sea to fort, probably with each colour-swap. Also for the last picture the green plate might need some cleaning before your next build, which I am looking forward to! -

[SR - CH 1 - Cat B] Captain Rodsh found land
Elostirion replied to Bart's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I really like how you did the transition from water to sand to vegetation on quite a small space. The gate of bones is a nice touch as well. The minifig posing is well done, they seem quite alive and in action. For the future I suggest to work with more of the really small bricks (1x2 flat, 1x1 flat, ...) to make transitions even smoother. Also I suggest to take a closer look at the choice of colours. At the beach they harmonize really well, however in the jungle they could show some more harmony for my taste (e.g. that lonely orange brick, the single flower with two yellow and one red petal or the sign over the bones stand out too much, either use some more of those or restrict it to one of these elements). I'm a conformist!! :-) For dust I always have one of those lying around, helps to get rid of most of the dust quite easily. -
The ship entering and the way you did the water inside is absolutely brilliant!

Maybe BoBS needs a similar rule to the Kaliphlin Civil War of at least two (?) from veteran builders?

[Frozen Beyond Cat A]: Defending the gate
Elostirion replied to Puvel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great work! As others have stated superb shaping of the landscape, and I especially love the perspective of the first picture. Those poor guys in front of the gate, though... ;-) One suggestion: Two or three arrows in the ground around the algus, maybe even with a small flickering flame, could have been a great additional touch. -
I for one always appreciate constructive criticism and things to improve on. And I totally agree with you, that the game puts a lot of emphasis on quantity, which is why he have seen quite a few, in my personal opinion, "rushed" builds with little fine tuning, and only few of real high quality so far. However I think that will change over time, when a) the initial enthusiasm ("ah, new game, cool, I will immediately have to get started!") has flattened down a bit and b) there will be challenges to win, thus requiring and especially rewarding real quality (like the Kaliphlin Civil War did in GoH).

Quick question about owning land: Does this mean a small plantation should have: a) at least a size of 32x32 b) at max a size of 32x32 c) roundabout a size of 32x32 (so that 22x28 would be perfectly fine, as would be 48x48, but neither would be 10x10 nor 60x50) d) exactly 32x32 e) exactly 32x32 at its widest place (e.g. a circular base with a diameter of 32) ?

This one will definitely be an inspiration to many future plantations built for BoBS. Beautiful.

Great work and amazing pictures. -
Amazing build - this is what sold me on joining Eslandola the most. Astonishing to see how much can be achieved using traditional white and even the larger elements. Definitely sets some standard for Eslandolan colonies. I am looking forward to more of that style and also the rest of the layout around the Castillo.

That texture of the wall is stunning. It really looks like something built quickly (originally) and then quickly refortified by its new owners, yet still solid and strong. Great work! Also the rather simple yet detailed ground fits perfectly.
-
Top notch build, those small patches of olive-green work amazingly well on the rocks to perfectly cover the feeling of a rough coast.

[ESL-Intro] The annual Fontonajo dinner
Elostirion replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks. The archways were supposed to be windows, but I like the idea of reliefs... :-) About the floor: In this (final) version only the front row of 2x1 is loose (as you can see here where I forgot them when taking the picture), all 2x2 are fixed. I had another version with offset/shift in progress but missed some bricks for it, so decided for this one. If you want I can upload a picture of the foundation later? Table, chairs and people are 100% loose, though. Also Thanks to Graham and Titus for your positive feedback. :-)
