[MOC] Hotel retaurant Marriott,11000 parts!!!
ReplicaOfLife replied to jalemac34's topic in LEGO Town
Brilliant build! Great details throughout, and elegant architecture to match! -
Great review! Nice set overall, I think, still not sold on the color schemes, though. Those of the bakery and the coffee shop don't work for me individually. The flower shop does, but only on its own, and not in conjunction with the other buildings. The builds themselves look like a lot of fun, well thought out and lots of intersting details. Overall critique on the building design is still the same for me as after the press release. Would've preferred for the set to separate into two or preferably three separate buildings, and I especially don't like the shared staircase for the right two buildings. Also the two buildings on the left somehow lack identity for me. They are overladen with references to CC, GE, PS, PR and BB on the outside, so there hardly is any defining unique aspect to them .

Brilliant! Absolutely love the interiors. Great details throughout! Will take some time later on or next year ;) to look at them more closely.

Nice work! Interesting concept that evokes the work of Liebeskind: http://www.awmagazin.de/sites/awmag/files/styles/1024x768/public/images/militaermuseum2_0.jpg (that's an actual building, not Photoshop! It'S the military history museum in Dresden, Germany) The interior is awesone, wish the official set had only half as many details as your work here.

Your first set costing over $100
ReplicaOfLife replied to BubbaFit45531's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Easy: 10197 Fire Brigade. First set I bought as an adult. Actually, I bought two at once, for a total of 270€. Nowadays, you'd be hard pressed to get just one of them for that price Don't think any set I got as a kid had a MSRP of over 100€. Even 100DM would be farfetched. The biggest ones I got new were the first Octan Gas Station and a larger Technic set. -
Wow, very cool build. This manages to look way better than similar real-life complexes :) Also some interesting building techniques used, e.g. for the blinds.

Holy cow! That's massive! And still nicely detailed. Great work!

Great work throughout!

I remember some pics of a MOC that looked a LOT like th Haunted House (both in general proportions and smaller details like window awnings) that supposedly predated the official set significantly. I think the Lego designer denied having seen the MOC, but the similarities were still uncanny. So if that's true, it's another point for 'at some point, two people are bound to have similar ideas' - even more so if the subject matter seeks to emulate real life.
-
Nice small vignette! Great microbuilds in there, and some simple but effective parts usages, eg the windows turned sideways as cabinets.

Just ordered the Kwik-E-Mart for 160€ off of S@H. 20% discount even beats double VIP points. And apparently it's retiring? The mail said 'as long as the stock lasts'...

a Special Place to Visit ( modular building moc )
ReplicaOfLife replied to carebear's topic in LEGO Town
Brilliant! Love the interior & exterior details. The scale is impressive, but completely fitting for a museum! -
Nice! I like the clean exterior design, and the interior is perfect - nice details, and great use of space.

I 'm not a friend (no pun intended) of all the purple/lilac/magenta used as primary colors for buildings/roofs, but those are some really nice designs anyway! And an impressive setup overall. Good work!

(MOC) Modular street and furniture, because your town deserves so!
ReplicaOfLife replied to alex54's topic in LEGO Town
Very nice. Some great ideas there! -
The fact that Town Hall looks rather boring does not diminuish the point that modulars have gotten smaller starting with Palace Cinema. Even the point about the height is irrelevant, as size is not just comprised of height. Stuff like the right half of DO (utterly pointless upper floors that would never exist like that in real life, coupled with a brownstone 'expansion' the size of a broom closet) or the potemkin-like launderette "building" included with the Brick Bank just feel more at home in the city line than with the modulars. To be honest, the Brick Bank would be a much better building if they had just omitted that thing in favor of having one full-sized building. In some ways, Assembly Square is better than the last two modulars in that regard. Especially the left building has nothing wrong with it, and my only real complaint about the two others is the shared staircase - though even that does exist in real life. Yes, they aren't near the size of CC or GG, but to me they look like believable buildings. None of the looks too exciting, but that's a different discussion altogether.

I'll most likely use two sets two mod this aswell. But I won't go with any mirror building. Instead, I'll mod the left and right buildings to full-size corner buildings on a 32x32 baseplate each, while the flower shop will be on 16 wide baseplate (it already looks a bit like the Pet Shop, so why not go all the way). I'll either do a simple mod with just another storey added, or I'll mod it into a building of the same height, but with increased depth. In any case, I'll try to fit interior staircases in both the bakery and the flower shop. I may even challenge myself and try to use ONLY bricks from two sets to do this...though most likely I'll get annoyed and just use whatever I need *g* Just realized: A new modular coming out means I propably should think about finally opening one of my Brick Banks and building it . Where the heck has this year gone?!

Literally my first thought upon seeing the first picture was how that roof color clashes with the color of the building's facade (...and looking at it again today I'm actually wondering wether that building is Dark Orange or the color of DO (medium dark flesh, dark nougat or whatever it's called). One thing I really think deserves more accolade about this set is the total absence of useless features that are just there to incorporate unnecessary play features (as was done in DO or BB). Let's hope they realized those were misplaced and that there are way more than enough ways to add play value without hidden doors and waste-of-space oversized chimneys...

Phew. When I first saw the pictures, I have to be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed. Seemed way too colorful and garish to me. But after seeing the video, I have to say that the pics are propably just oversaturated. Anyway, the set itself... Pros: - sand green. And sand blue. And loads of dark orange tiles? - nice references to past buildings throughout - really nice interiors, as is the rule for the last few buildings (except for the mostly empty music store, but that may just be a reference to the Empty Emporium ;)) - Size! Yay for three full floors again - well, almost, but the rooftop patio is close enough. - Price is very reasonable aswell. Cons: - Why make it three buildings? Granted, it looks kinda nice, but spacing out 3 buildings and a small alley over 48 studs leaves the average width even below 16 studs. I refer to my post from the other day in that I would have preferred a single, truly magnificient building (32 wide)..or maybe two bigger ones on the size they went for would've worked better, too. - even taking into account that the pictures seem a bit oversaturated, it still feels a bit too colorful, which gives it a slightly cluttered atmosphere...though that may just take some getting used to. - While each building works well on its own, I don't really like the way they look together. Something just clashes there for me architecturally. Thinking about it, it's propbaly the 'PR'-style center building inbetween the other two that look American (left) and Dutch to me. Still, nice addition to the line!

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Meh. Stuff like that might look good as a single display piece, but would totally break the classic modular tradition. Squeezing in more than 2 buildings on a 32x32 (or more than four on 2 of them) would move the modular line further into the direction of the smaller Creator houses or even open backed city stuff, which we don't need (at least I don't). The barber shop half of DO (with the small brown 'Building') and the laundromat portion of the Brick Bank are cringeworthy enough. Please no more of that. If 10255 really has this high piece count we keep hearing about, I hope for ONE magnificient building on a 32x32 baseplate, with its spatial dimensions similar to or exceeding those of Green Grocer. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Is that from an official Lego catalogue? Cause someone really did not know what perspectives are... The way Pet Shop has been inexpertly pasted into the pic is photoshop-disaster-worthy. -
While I appreciate the sentiment as a compliment, this whole development has further convinced me in my stance of not sharing the LDD files for my buildings with anyone. So far, I wouldn't do it for fear of someone using them to create & sell instructions (without crediting/sharing revenue with me), but these recent developments are an entirely new dimension. Btw: The exterior design of my Record Store (the 'yellow building' from my sig) was itself heavily inspired by a MOC by cimddwc (called The Chima Trikes Store). I reengineered the basic exterior features from the pics of his MOC - WITH his explicit permission, of course. This is the way I think it should be done, imho. We're all fellow AFOLs and should treat each others creations with the respect they deserve (and that we would surely expect from others if they were our own). Knowingly buying knock-offs, or unauthorized instructions, is not the way to do things, even if it's 'easier'. You're always welcome to draw inspiration and build your own interpretation, after all . I'm kinda curious, does anyone know if LDD files or instructions for the other knock-off modulars were available at any point? I'd guess so, since I can't imagine the knock-off brand completely reengineering a building from a few pictures. Will be interesting to see how the instructions turn out, too, as now they can't just copy the original Lego ones onto fewer pages... @Rick: I completely understand your point, and I also think that no publicity at all should go to the knock-off brand. No links, pictures, or even mentions of the name. But I feel that the issue itself is still worth discussing, especially as a member of this board is directly affected. I hope this is okay with you.

Should lego make army theme or not?
ReplicaOfLife replied to Peter22's topic in General LEGO Discussion
They don't, and absolutely should not. There are way more then enough possibilities for kids to play out violent scenes within the themes Lego offers, so there's no reason to create something that promotes the real, sickening deal. Adults that like to create 'armies' with toys can turn to the 3rd party brands available.
