LEGO Ideas: 21310 Old Fishing Store (Fall 2017)
ReplicaOfLife replied to just2good's topic in LEGO Town
Same here. I had pegged this as a brilliant MOC with zero actualy chance to get picked. Will propably pick this up, especially if the final model is actually sand green. -
Already saw this in the modulars rumors and discussion thread. Really freakin shameful that stuff like this happens.

That looks quite nice, actually.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Really curious now. Bigger set sounds promising...Assembly Square somehow does not. I'm picturing a bigger than usual footprint with lots of empty space (the square). Also hope 'ultimate' is used as in 'the best', not as in 'the last' -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
From all the speculation / wishing we had for this year, this sounds the best by far. -
I realized the other day that with its piece count it wouldn't even be allowed on there Thanks! :)

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
By all means, I wouldn't call a kitchen and a toilet an apartment -
To be honest, I don't see the point in that. I'd rather submit it in its >3500 piece glory then trying to design a scaled-down version. Even on the odd chance it went to review, it wouldn't get picked anyway (going pretty much directly against the direction Lego has taken with the modulars).

Thanks for the hard work guys! Appreciated. New design sure feels more modern, and with a few tweaks to the css scheme everything will be fine. Don't let negative comments upset you - that's (unfortunately) just what the internet brings out in people. Can't chime in with anything new, but I'd like to add my voice to those that wish for a bit more contrast. Especially all the info that is written in the very light grey (e.g. time posted on a post, or the number of views, author info and topic post date for each thread on a forum page) is really hard to read and should be adjusted to a significantly darker shade of gray.

Nope. At over 3500 pieces, it's way too big. I could leave out a floor and almost bring it to standard modular piece count, but it looks a abit stunted that way. (the floors are designed to be interchangeable, so it's no problem to do) Like this: Pieces highlighted in bright yellow are 1x1 bricks with stud on side. There's two connection points at the bottom, and another one at the top in the back.

Yep, still have all my modulars assembled. Won't be taking any of them apart in the near future, too. I'll try to take a couple of pics of the Outdoor Store together with my previous MOCs and maybe one or two official sets for size comparison. Considering the main color of the building is Dark Orange, there isn't a lot of it visible on the facade, that's true. But in a way, that's what I wanted. I was aiming for an architectural style like you'd find on old buildings in cities such as Hamburg. They often had elaborate front facades using natural stone and stucco together with bricks, while on the back you'd find rather plain brick facades. Thanks To be honest, I didn't know orange was the contrast color of turquoise. I just liked how the two of them looked together

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Who doesn't wish for that. But it's not likely. A set like that would propably be 200-250€ if they kept the detailing on the same level they've reached with the newer modulars. And the unnecessary play features need sparts aswell... I just don't see it - especiall with 3 other big building sets on the market right now (Ghostbusters Fire Station & the two Simpsons sets) -
Cool, nice to know it evokes the right kind of memories :) I actually thought about putting in a tent but could not fit it withouth using up too much space

Thanks, all of you Very glad you like it. I got the first batch of Dark Turquoise slopes on a whim when I saw them really cheap at a BL store I was placing an order at. I also instantly thought of oxidised copper. When I got them and saw how intense this color is, I wasn't sure they'd work on a building. But now that it's finished, I'm very happy I used them, as the dark turquoise and the dark orange work really well together. (to be honest though: sand green is a much better match for oxidised copper) This also is the first building where I had lots of fun designing and building the interior. I always seemed to run out of ideas when I got to the upstairs levels before, but for this one, the ideas just kept coming. Nice to see that it shows.

I'd like to present to you my newest moldar building: The Outdoor Store! Some specs: Designed between January and the end of May 2016 in LDD > 3500 pieces Four floors with full interior; containing three businesses and one apartment Color scheme: Light Bluish Gray and Dark Orange on the ground floor, Dark Orange and White on the upper floors. The roof is done in Dark Turquoise. Pieces sourced from my own collection, 6 Bricklink orders and 3 copies of 31050 Corner Deli More pictures in the full album on flickr: https://www.flickr.c...157672774050580 A small extension at the back contains a small bouldering area where customers can try out new shoes before buying them. I had the two BURPs from a set I parted out, and figured out this way to use them in a modular. The trophy on the wall is from the time the owner participated in quad bike races. The quad bike is the owner's pride. He always says it's up for sale, but when you ask he just names a ridiculous price... This is a slightly modified version of the bike found in 31025 Mountain Hut A look through the windows. Also notice how the first floor balcony/patio structurally is part of the ground floor. The first floor features an office space. The business plan? Something to do with media... Seems like everybody is having a good time at work! The young guy in the airport shirt is a trainee. Having no other hardware to spare, he has to work on a really old computer. No wonder he rather chats with his colleagues! The first floor landing was retrofitted with a small toilet. The second floor features an apartment. The couple living here owns the house, the husband also runs the office downstairs. The small bathroom features a shower complete with glass shower cabin, toilet and a sink. Top floor features a small piano school. The wife of the couple from the second floor fulfilled her dream here. The piano is based on this design by Masao Hidaka: [/code] Desk area in the piano school. Depending on your disposition this either is cluttered or cozy ;) Looking forward to hear your thoughts :)

Studs in technic holes?
ReplicaOfLife replied to ReplicaOfLife's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
That sounds handy. Haven't tried the new BL yet Still not sure I get what you mean with 'put in place'. LDD doesn't allow placing bricks with their studs inside technic holes, no matter how, or when. -
Studs in technic holes?
ReplicaOfLife replied to ReplicaOfLife's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Thanks for the quick replies, guys! I might look into LDD alternatives at some point. While I like using LDD simply because I'm used to it, it has it's downsides that continually bug me, one example being that it's really complicated to build at angles (getting the round shape of the tower of my Record Store was a total bitch - luckily, once I had it, it was copy/paste from there), or that some legal builds are impossible, or of course the anual labour required to generate a Bricklink XML from the LDD file... On the other hand, I'm a bit lazy when it comes to stuff like that I also thought about using a special color to mark the replacement plates. I do something similar with pieces that are completely hidden from view - they all are bright purple in my LDD files, signifying I can just use any color & condition I have on hand. This indeed does not work, I just tried it to make sure. -
I'm working on a new project that requires bricks/plates connected by their studs to technic holes. I know that connecting plates with more than one stud to more than one technic holes of the same brick/beam is considered illegal (something to do with the duress this puts on the pieces). However, I found that LDD apparently only allows 1x1 plates to connect to technic brick holes - not even 1x1 bricks want to connect, and you also can't connect a 1x1 technic brick to any plate with more than one stud. Is there any work around for this? The only thing I came up with so far is putting 3 1x1 plates instead of a brick where I need them, and n 1x1 plates for every 1xn plate I want to connect to the technic bricks (since I intend to break this particular rule anyway). Is there an easier way? I use LDD to design my MOCs and get a parts list for bricklink, so having to come up with a way to convert tons of 1x1 plates back to bricks and plates doesn't seem that enticing...

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Town Hall just doesn't work for me. The facade tries to look grand, but pretty much fails on every level. The portico is oversized for the overall size of the building, and the upper floor details are both too simplistic (seen by themselves, especially on the topmost floor) and too different from each other (being different on every floor). The tower looks a bit too square aswell. Someone did a MOD that was increased in width and height AND added wings to the side, that version looked great. The official set does not, imho. I decided I'll propably never open my copy of it. I just finished a dark orange MOC, so I now have the color on my modular street, and there's pretty much nothing else the TH has to offer that I'd want. I read and watched several in-depth reviews, and apparently it even scores below Palace Cinema in terms of interesting building techniques aswell. -
Thanks for posting that. It's useful to know a bit about the theory behind design. While I don't find all the examples he posted in this article or the related ones on his blog to look altogether horrible, most do or at least have several areas that just don't work in their general context, or look out of place. This also happens to be the case with a lot of modular MOCs you see. When designing a MOC; I usually go with what feels right, but when reading the article I found that most of 'what feels right' has solid reasoning behind it. Usually, when something doesn't follow the basic rules, it just bugs me. One example being the right hand facade of my Record Store, where the window/door arrangement on the ground floor doesn't match that on the upper floor...I need to change that.
-
Another great work! The interiors are real eyecatchers - love the old-fashioned tv set in Gini's, and the clothing boutique has a nice, airy feel to it. Is there anything in the upper floor of Gini's?
-
What do you mean? I'd estimate this to be about the same height as Green Grocer (which is the largest modular save for Town Hall). If anything, the gen2 modulars might be dwarfed by this.
-
Nice building. Love the small details, especially the wallpaper in the shop itself The upper floor facade looks interesting, too. This also takes me back a bit, as my first-ever modular MOC was also a hat shop.
