News LEGO Architecture 2014 News & Discussion
Andy D replied to Herky's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I am glad to see a thread about the Trevi Fountain. I too would prefer one thread per set as it makes it easier to find. Having all the sets for a line makes it difficult to see or find individual sets... All that said the Trevi Fountain is a must buy for me. I threw a coin in the fountain in 2008 for a speedy return to Rome, but in 2010 due to conditions beyond my control, (I was even on the way there) I did not make it back to Rome and it looks like I will not make it back anytime soon. So... This set is a must for me! Andy D- 180 replies

It looks like some videos are starting to come in from the Nuremberg Toy Fair for some Technic sets. Any photos of this set yet? Andy D

Very espresso machine! Veryrealistic. Can you put the links to the build and the Starbucks in the thread? I can't seem to get them to work from the video in the post... Thanks, Andy D

Thanks for the photo! My interest has been sparked since I first heard about this set. After seeing it I may have to buy at least 2 copies, maybe 3 so I can build and leave all three assembled. I hope LEGO does add one set like this each year to supplement he modulars. Andy D

Overall... Very nice design and colors and parts usage. The sidewalk caught my eye... Very unique. Andy D

I'm not the greatest photigrapher, yet. I just need more practice, but I am always looking for photigraohy tips. What you illude to is that photography is all about light... Correct, photography is about the appropriate use of light. That said, I have found a series of videos on YouTube about table top photography, by a professional photographer that illustrates how to use inexpensive DIY items for great photograph. Check out videos from Pro Photo Life, or prophotolife. He has 20 something videos and a number of them are about tabletop techniques. You don't need the best, most expensive equipment... A good photographer just needs good technique. Your photo is good, but it may not be completely lit. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10520&st=127 Look at my post, number 127 for links to videos. Very nice conversion! Lots of little details, not one but two French balconies. Andy D

You're welcome! Everything worth something takes something. In this case, BaseBrick takes time, but one can receive value in the form of LEGO collection content management. Good luck with your Storage/Sorting/inventory management Andy D

I have been using BaseBrick, ReBrickable and Brickset. I like BaseBrick better because I can change my view of my inventory from parts to sets and I like the view mode better (my choice, other may like Brickset better). I can see what parts I have as loose parts and what parts are in sets. You can enter parts in to BaseBrick as sets or as loose parts. I find that my better inventory is in BaseBrick. There may be an interface between BaseBrick and ReBrickable I just have not discovered it yet. I also have a portion of my inventory in BrickSet and Brickset does have an interface between Brickset and Rebrickable. BaseBrick, ReBrickable and Brickset all have their strong points, the key is to finding out which features work best for you. Andy D

Kristel. Wow, just Wow! Another winner. This is really "top notch". I really like the color combination. A grey building normally doesn't sound great, but your use of white as an accent really makes it pop. I also think the floor in th cupcake shop is terrific, I can't wait for an explanation. I can think of one way (maybe), just need time to try it out. When do the instructions go on sale? Andy D

Wow! Your "Blue Grocer" is great! I wish I had thought of that. As it was I decided to substitute some less expensive colors on the side where it would not be noticed. I also substituted some green window frames (because I had green) for the white ones, I may go back and fix that one day. My Green Grocer still cost me more to BL than a set at that time. Now I look at the cost of a set and decide if I really want an old set "that much". Since the only old set I want that I do not have is the Market Street I just may build it using alternate colors. I saw a good looking tan Market Street, not sure what color I would choose. Andy D

Good luck! Be sure to let us know your final cost. If you can Bricklink, PAB, etc. a GG for less than $600 you will be doing great. Back when I BL'ed a CC a couple of years ago I thought I could do better than the going prices for a complete set. Wow! Was I wrong, I wound up spending at least $150 more for parts and I had to sub some colors just to find a part in a reasonable price range. Then there's the shipping! I had to go to at least 8 or 10 stores just to get the parts, the shipping really adds up! Bottom line, BL'ing the set was fun I learned a lot about BL, but it was just not the least expensive option for me. No matter what you decide, have fun. Andy D

How about the PAB wall in the store at Downtown Disney Anaheim? I believe it is closer to Long Beach than Glendale. The store at Downtown Disney is also larger thn the one in Glendale. Just another option. Andy D -
If you use iMovie, try using sound effects included with iLife, there must be something similar with Windows Movie Maker. Also look on the web for royalty free music and sound effects. Andy D

I really like this! It is very similar to what I was trying to build, but I could not get the train to look good on the 16x16. I didn't think about putting the train separate from the base that had the ticket counter. Good luck in the contest. Andy D

I subtly hinted also (heck, I put some on my Amazon wishlist). I'm hoping for some Architecture sets. I have been getting a few sets each year since my re-kindling of my LEGO hobby. No to wait and see (I'm not a package shaker) for Chritmas morning. Andy D -
I really like you budget, it has a certain amount of flexible control ??? (Huh?) Why not build any VW Campers? Andy D

Don't worry about joining the Old Timer's club, just get to be 50 and do it! Andy D

For 2012 my plan was"Less spending, more building"... We all know how well that worked out, yeah right, spend less... Didn't work out, built about the same as 2011. For 2013 my plan was "Get organized and build more"... Well, I did complete my new studio and I am quite a ways on the organized part, still more to go, but I built about the same as 2012. For 2014 my plan is to "Just Build more"... Let's see how well I can focus on just one goal. (good luck with that) What are your 2014 LEGO plans? Andy D

Wow! I won! It was fun just seeing all the entries. Thanks to CopMike for hosting this. Andy D

This is how I value a set I want. Is it worth the asking price to me? Do I want the set? I started this thread just as an exercise just for fun and to show folks that there is anoher way to break down the price of a set beside the total set cost or PPP. I do agree that the PPP is a good way to figure what the small to large piece ratio and thus the building time/enjoyment. For me, time equals enjoyment LEGO is first about building and scond about display. I am glad that so many have gotten involved and added so much to the discussion. Andy D
