This is probably the most important item to many of us, as I don't tend to buy all at once, and I don't have a firm idea about future quantity needs as my collection grows. Andy D

I think this guy wins the AFOL competition
Andy D replied to Faefrost's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Yep, he's even older than me. I like GOFOL! It could describe me! I may even use it.... Andy D -
Wow! Those look great. Very organized. May seem expensive for initial purchase, but looks like an excellent long term organizational solution. I love seeing and hearing about all the storage solutions, it helps me get ideas about my own solution. Andy D Wow! That was post 1000! Posted in one of my favorite topics.

No rules for me. It's all LEGO. I mix themes to add a bit of whimsy, I figure they all live in a diverse LEGO universe. Andy D

I do sort different elements and colors within the bins. In some cases I use plastic bags, in some cases I use the Glad Entree food storage containers inside the bins to separate parts/colors. I had an advantage of completely overhauling my storage system last year, I really wanted neatness and usability and cost was sort of secondary, but of course I did look for the lowest cost within a storage category. For instruction books I just use a couple of the storage bins, not as orderly as the binder approach, which sounds really nice, but for me the bins are more compact, requiring less space. I just remodeled a spare bedroom last year to be my studio for LEGO and other (mostly LEGO) so neatness counts. Unfortunately I have almost outgrown my space, but my wife told me "no expanding into other rooms" (like her hobby room), so I need to remain as organized as possible. Andy D

I use these 15 qt Sterilite bins with latches from Target they cost about $4.50 each. I currently have about 30 of them in use along with 2 Akron Mills drawer systems and a bunch of Plano 3700 series boxes that I got on sale. My total investment in storage containers is about $250 which is less than the cost of 2 modulars and it really helps to keep my studio organized and neat. Andy D

You are absolutely right! Critical thinking skills are the skills most missing from people today, from children to adults. I used to stress critical thinking in the class I taught in the local community college. Methodology in studies is also very important, the methodology will allow a study to reveal the truth, not just what you want the study to reveal. I felt something was missing in this study, and I believe you hit it right square on the head. The teacher seemed to have had an axe to grind and so she/he devised a study and dragged her class into it. There may be a study here, but this one is not it. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D

My favorite is the Ice cream Motorcycle. That is so clever it is beyond words. If I can figure out how you did it I definately plan to build one! Andy D P.S. Do you have an LDD file you would be willing to share?

I don't keep boxes because of the storage space requirements and my new motto "Neatness counts". The only LEGO boxes I have are... Unbuilt sets. I understand that to some folks the boxes are part of the complete package of the hobby, but for me, all I want are the "little plastic bricks" because I can't build anythong out of the boxes excepy a multi colored (cardboard) tower. Just MHO Andy D

My new plan, which seems to be working so far... The new modular (2 copies) the new Winter Village set and maybe one or two others. I just don't need that many sets. I have parts galore, I want to start building some of the MOCs I have in my head, so maybe I will just need a few specialized parts from BL. In short, contain my hobby and not let it be an addiction. MOC Sharing Dilemma
Andy D replied to Cumulonimbus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Art and science is all about standing on the shoulders of others. If no one shared anything the art would be very slow to advance, if at all. I for one am grateful for ll who share MOCs and WIPs, I get many ideas from these, I do not copy, but I may use one element of a design either directly or most likely a modified version. But it sparks my own imagination. I have not posted much lately mainly because of lack of ompletion of my own works, but I do plan to. I really appreciate the constructive criticism... In the art world, C&C advances the art. Andy D -

I'm going to cut down this year, only... 2 - Parisian Restaurant The Winter Village set Maybe the new Creator Bike Shop, maybe one more set TBD. This does not include the LEGO Movie sets I already purchased and the second Pet Shop I just purchased this weekend. That's it! I'm really trying to cut back. My backlog is too big, my unsorted inventory is quite large and I have several MOCs I want to start/complete. Andy D

This is very nice! I reminds me of the MMV, only better. Lots of very nice details and interesting build techniques, I really need to study this more. Andy D

MOCs, how much do they end up costing?
Andy D replied to psdillon's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I would say that for a 2500 piece MOC, $1,000 to $2,000 is quite a lot. Maybe you are using quite a few rare pieces or rare colors. My last MOC that I sourced from BL was only about 1000 pieces and I think it may have cost me $150. Originally I wanted to use a number of tan slopes both normal and inverted. As I recall some of the slopes were $0.75 each so I looked at using a redish brown instead and got the slopes for about 1/3 the cost. The MOC looks just as good and cost ne about 1/3 of what my original color scheme would have cost. My key to keeping costs down is part and color substitution, it is all about he art anyway. Andy D -
Very, very, very nice! I am struck by the symetry, there are places where one cannot tell front from back from sides. So well thought out and executed. Andy D

This is exactly the challenge I am dealing with right now. I just need to sort and catagorize until I have some idea where such a part might be if I have it. I do not need to know exactly what I have, but where it might be if I do have it... That is my goal! Good luck! Andy D

Very impressive collection! It appears that you may soon need to take over another room. If you have any older children maybe you can encourage them to go off to college. Your space reminds me of the room/set used for the LEGO Movie. Andy D

Very nice MOD. I always like to see alternate builds that only use parts included with he original. What are the dimension differences? Would it be possible to edit one of your photos to show the original and your MOD side-by-side? Andy D
