  1. The more I look at this project, the more I like it. The option to make different models is very neat, and the mechanics look very light yet robust. Are you planning on making a video?
  2. The video was very fun to watch. It's exciting to see the how far ABS can be pushed. My building philosophy is very purist, but I really enjoy combinations of Lego with non-Lego components, be it RC components or pneumatics, like nerdsforprez has done in his recent projects. Great job.
  3. These are not expensive at all. They are most likely made in China, or somewhere else where labor costs are very minimal. North American machine shops have an hourly rate of $50 to $80 (for this type of part), or you can approximate it to $1 per minute. Parts that cost $5 must be made in less than 5 minutes. This is not possible without losing precision or sacrificing the surface finish. But it's possible to machine them for less than $5 if your labor rate is much lower.
  4. I'm reading through this review again and I am realizing that a thorough, balanced review can bring almost as much entertainment as the actual set. You earned your holiday with this one, Jim.
  5. Excellent review as usual, Jim. The mistake in the instructions is understandable, but I think the gearbox jamming issue will haunt this set until a solution is found.
  6. Hi Andreas, your forklift looks very interesting. Very nice use of studded beams. It would be great if you could post a few more pictures or maybe even a video of your build.
  7. Excellent work, it looks fantastic. Does it have pop-up headlights?
  8. Molds with sharp corners are very expensive to make. The studless beams don't need exotic molds, and they use less material. I doubt there's more to it than that. The studded beams are still made, but in much lower quantities. Your topic title should be "studded".
  9. Richard, any chance of you taking some closeup pictures of the set parts? I followed a few threads discussing these sets and the poor quality is always mentioned, but I was curious just how bad it is.
  10. Maybe not always, but at least for the past little while: http://www.costco.ca/CatalogSearch?storeId=10302&catalogId=11201&langId=-24&refine=&keyword=lego+technic
  11. What a great model. Excellent functions and the instructions look very good, too.
  12. Very good to hear. It's a pretty clever design.
  13. Very innovative suspension setup! I like how light it seems. How durable is it? Do any suspension components "disassemble" with use?
  14. Nice work on both of them, I really like the doors on the white one.
  15. Very good demonstration. The worm gears have only two advantages: size, and being able to lock the follower gear in place.
  16. What a great thread. I'd like to think that I'm improving since I have less crappy builds these days, but this Offroad Tricycle is a big offender. The center of gravity was way too high, and pendular suspensions need a counter-balance on the other axle(s), not a pivot point. It was so bad that I actually set the video to circus music.
  17. Wow, this is excellent news. I remember asking about being able to run programs through the SBrick, it's great to see that it has been implemented.
  18. I made an independent suspension, 13 studs wide, for the TC9 contest. Looks like you have space to fit it, although the wheels might rub the fenders. This is a very fun read, by the way.
  19. Engine looks well scaled, indeed. What color are you planning for the interior?
  20. Nice model, the firing mechanism is very good - I like its speed.
  21. That's a very good idea, I'm not sure how much space it would take, but the concept is elegant. I love mechanical alternatives to stuff that's handled by computers, solenoids and hydraulics.
  22. Great photos of these sets. You did a fantastic job restoring them. I had the forklift and the pneumatic set when I was much younger and the pieces are still in my collection, although some are damaged or lost. This brings back a lot of good memories, thanks for sharing.
  23. This is starting to look pretty good! I liked the roof better when it was one stud taller - the rea window splitter had a better angle. Very speedy building!
  24. Nice work with the seats. I'll be following the updates.
