Great work Sariel, the performance is very impressive. Now I'll have to get some of the new smooth axle joiners. Now a lot off topic: CVTs are used in plenty of cars currently on the road. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_automobiles_with_continuously_variable_transmissions In cars, they are often more efficient than manual transmissions. They work well at all speeds, but are less reliable in the long run than automatic (and possibly manual) transmissions.

Very good start so far. How is the performance of the half pins attached to the cylinders closest to the bucket? Do you have space for a solid axle in there?

Erik, I started the discussion of pneumatic versus mechanical functions after seeing some of the WIP topics that mentioned features such as fake engines, pendular suspensions, HOG steering and so on in the same breath as the pneumatic functions. Please let me be clear: I am not against the inclusion of such features. All I asked for was to consider dividing the list of functions into two parts - pneumatic and mechanical. This will let voters decide the score based on pneumatics alone. They can still choose to award points for style or mechanical functions, but the goal of the contest is clearly isolated. I completely agree with you that models with pneumatics at their core should get more points, but voters can easily be razzle dazzled by the non pneumatic functions. All I'm trying to do is make it easier for them to judge on the theme of the contest.

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
BusterHaus replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The French translation of "jet engine" is "moteur à réaction". Not that this was translated from French, so draw your own conclusions. -
Jim, Milan and everyone else: what do you think of having two separate lists in the entry topic, one for pneumatic functions and one for mechanical functions? I don't want to discount projects that have mechanical systems, but I think it would help voters to see at a glance the pneumatic functions of a model. It may also raise the quality of entries by making builders aware that the pneumatic functions are going to stand out, so we don't end up with entries that have 14 mechanical functions and one pneumatic one (think of a supercar with a pneumatically adjusted spoiler).

Nice job with this model. It looks simple at first glance but has some very complex shapes.- 18 replies

FYI, it's the same issue in Chrome on Android 6.0.1 (this was wasn't happening previously).

Good work so far. Those hubs look pretty interesting - I don't have them in my collection so it's nice to see them mid-build. Keep up the hard work. -

This is great! I like how clean it looks. If you build a few more you can have some Figure 8 races: -
9398 with 42054 wheels

These tires breathe some new life into the 9398. The B model actually looks proportional now. -

Go do something else for a while. Not every day is going to be equally productive, so don't waste your time if you are getting nowhere. Go for a walk, a swim, or a bicycle ride and reset your mind. Then come back and start with something easy to get your confidence back. -
Technic Hall of Fame Discussion

Construction category is spelled "Constrution", may want to fix that... -
Modular sounds like a very solid direction. You may also want to ask Burf about this, his stuff is heavy and moves people on omni wheels.

I noticed the same thing, the simple solution is to straighten the wheels before switching steering modes. I finished the tractor tonight and really enjoyed the build. The non-symmetrical features like the selector box, the ladder, steering mechanism and cab rotating base really make it stand out from all the other sets.
-
Did you consider placing an omni wheel on each side of the motor and driving it directly? The axle can pass from the motor through each wheel and be supported on the other side by a frame. These motors have quite a bit of torque so I don't think you would have trouble moving the robot.

Used sets are under $190 Canadian dollars. http://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?id=110518#T=P If it's a more local seller you can ask to include shipping (I did this). New power functions listed above come up to $95 Canadian. The set has 4 of these shock absorbers http://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=95292c01&idColor=3#T=P&C=3 Each shock absorber is just under $12 (Canadian) so you're paying roughly $50 for a nice wheels/tires and over 1,200 parts. It's a very good deal.

The V2 IR receiver is not sold separately on the Lego website. You may try bricklink.com, but I don't remember the models being differentiated. The surest way to get one is to pick up a used 9398 set, it will include all the items on your list: two L motors, a servo motor, battery box and remote control. It will also provide a lot of parts that you can use for the modification of the 42039. A used 9398 set is marginally more expensive than all the Power Functions parts bought separately.

This is a gorgeous model. The shape, the details and the colour scheme are beyond excellent. It is the first time a Le Mans racer is exciting to me, I usually find them rather dull. Congratulations, I hope you do well in the contest.

A filing cabinet works great, I use one and it makes instructions really easy to find. Sometimes I feel like it's overkill, as most of the instructions are stored in their original bags, away from light and dust. I'm not sure if they would degrade that quickly just sitting on a book shelf. The issue is keeping them upright, and a filing cabinet solves that perfectly.

Grum's Shed
BusterHaus replied to grum64's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The scaling differences don't bother me either. Unless you're getting close to a 1:1 scale it's very difficult to recreate all the lines of a car with bricks. By the way, do you have a preference between system and Technic models? Is one easier to build than the other?
