  1. I'm not sure if you are already doing this, but you can find the center position of each mechanism by including a homing routine at the start of your program. It looks for the end of travel in one direction (detected by motor stall or by the input from a sensor). You then zero the motor rotation counter and find the travel limit in the opposite direction. Divide the result (X) of the rotation counter by two and use that as your input to move the motor to the center of the available movement. You can also use X/2 to set the travel limits in each direction. In practice you will need to adjust X/2 for both the center of the movement (due to backlash in the motor and mechanism) and for travel limits (will be slightly lower than X/2 to avoid stressing the mechanism).   3. The motor orientation on the Chic truck is a very nice way to shorten the wheelbase. It looks great, too. I'm also impressed by the Hedgehog, the independent steering makes it very maneuverable.
  4. Very useful review (as usual). This set has a lot more going on than it seems. I like the stacker extension hinge and the container claw. I noticed that the video went out of focus a few times, is this just a problem on my end or did the auto focus on your camera pick up something unwanted?

  7. Firefox on Windows, Firefox and Chrome on Android, they all have the same issue. Jim said that this is most likely a server/database issue and that technical support is looking into it.
  8. Very interesting project, you will probably want to lubricate the turntable. The 1x1 round tiles should be OK as long as you don't use the transparent ones - I could see those cracking faster, as mentioned by @nerdsforprez.

Maybe ask Santa for some help... The EV3 expansion set is great as well, and comes in a very nice container.

  14. Something to ponder between contests: I noticed that the voting topic for the last contest (TC10) had a lot of comments about the difficulty of choosing the top 6 models. I was in the same boat and wished there was a way to award points to other entries. Maybe it's time to take a look at the voting method. Right now we assign points to the top 6 entries. One way would be to expand the points to 10 or 12 entries. Inevitably, we would still find a 13th model which we wished could be awarded points. I don't think this is the solution. Another option is to expand the voting to three categories, like the Porsche Of Your Dreams contest that Lego held this year. You would assign points to 6 entries in each of these categories: technical aspect, aesthetics and originality. Some models would obviously fall into more than one category, but this system would also allow awarding points to a hidden gem. For example, a model with few functions could get 0 points for the technical aspect but if it's really beautiful it could score high in the aesthetics category. The model with the highest point total from from all categories combined would be the winner. I think this voting method would also take the quality of the entries to another level, as contestants don't always focus on all three categories (I'm guilty of this as well). I'm not complaining about the current quality of entries, as they are very strong. However, all builders - from beginner to expert - could see if they have an area that they would like to improve. I'm curious to hear what you guys think, and if Jim and Milan would be alright with the extra counting.

  17. For driving on snow I highly recommend skipping differentials. The speed difference between the inside and outside wheels will be absorbed by the slippery surface. Also, the 9398 tires are terrible for traction in snow:

  20. The video is great, you could air it as a Saturday morning cartoon. I like the vehicle, too, it's surprisingly quick and the turning radius is much smaller than expected. Great work!
  21. Very nice C-Model! The design is very original, the use of tracks for wheels and for the seat works well and I'm impressed with the height it can reach.

  23. Hello Hans, This is a pretty cool project. Is there a reason why you use touch sensors instead of motor positions to detect the end of travel? Removing the sensors would simplify the build quite a bit. It adds a bit more work to the programming, but it's fairly simple to implement.
