Hehe, a really nice build Like others here, my first thought was the hailfire droid. Escpecially like the gripper arm coming out, and also the way you use the clamshell buckets as fairings around the BB- 8 replies

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
kolbjha replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Have you tried lekekassen.no? 42070 for 1948 NOK. I have used them many times, good experience so far. -
Thanks for an excellent review Jim! So far I am not able to make a clear go/not go opinion on 42070. However, I think, like most of you guys it's overpriced. On the other hand, it's quite functional. Yeah, I know, some parts appear unfinished. One of the things I really like with this model, is the overall appearance/main design. In short: Main pros.: Good design, good functions, Main con: Price.

[REVIEW] 42069 - Extreme Adventure
kolbjha replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks for an outstanding (as always) review Jim! Together with the review of Sariel, I'm totally convinced! Question now is whether to get 1 or 2 sets... IMO, the Unimog tires with yellow rims and black pulleys have the right balance between design and bad-***-factor. Thanks for these pictures! BTW, is there an auto correct function on EB, that translates "alpha-sierra-sierra" into "megablocks"? -

Technic 2017 Set Discussion

I'm going to get all 3 2H sets. I think they all seem to be great. I like the variety we have seen the last years in the Technic line. BTW, anybody knows if the 42070 have return to center steering, and if so - how it's achieved? -

Agreed, I experienced the same. What can I say, Clive, I'm really impressed of your progress, and - what I'm sure you have to - your creative processes and planning in order to make it happen. It's a pure joy to follow your build Oh, and BTW, I have built the 8880 now, classic set classic fun. The temptation was too much after following your build - 8880 was the Xmas gift from my wife last year - let's say you inspired my wishlist... -
Are you thinking of the black friction pins without slot (from before 1990), or those from the 90's with the slot? The first one is really hard to remove, the 90's version with slot is thicker than today's pins, and also stronger (I think), but still relatively easy to remove. I think you are right, the beams and technic bricks are thinner than 1L (8 mm), more like 7.8 mm. I think the reason from TLG's side is to make it easier to build and take apart the bricks in normal studded building. I guess the same thickness used for bricks also is used for technic beams. I assume the reason this didn't appear as an issue in the studful era, is that for example plates often were used together with the bricks, effectively eliminating the effect of stacking bricks getting thinner than the "ideal" width, as the distance between the studs on the plate is 1L (8 mm).

Universal sets
kolbjha replied to kolbjha's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Good point. However, if looking at the set 8062, it only included parts that were very common for that period. A universal set of today should of course use parts that are common today. A good entry in a competion like this, would include only common parts. In other words, anyone with a decent modern Technic collection should be able to replicate the models (perhaps not in the exact colors, but still...). -
I managed to get the universal set 8062 (including suitcase) a while ago, in OK condition for a reasonable prize. I never used it, until recently. The last couple of weeks, my soon 6 year old son and I have been busy building the models, modding them, and creating MOCs, with parts only from this set. Fantastic set, and a lot of fun! Myself, I would have absolutely loved this set as a kid! There are a lot of nice parts, and lot of possibilities, yet limitations. I think this combination is the key to the fun, because it challenges our creativity (I guess this is valid for Lego in general...). This set directs the focus more on function than looks. Even I prefer studless construction, I have to admit it's great fun to go back in time with this set. This made me think, perhaps it is a market out there for universal sets. Or is it only me? And my son? In my mind these kind of sets would be a perfect entry to Technic. I am sure TLG have their reasons for their strategies, but I hope we some day will see the return of the universal sets. Meanwhile, why not make a competition here on EB, where the challenge is to create the best universal set? The entry would have to be a universal set inventory and instructions for different models. Perhaps different classes; basic, pneumatic, PF, etc. What do you think?

I can confirm what HallBricks writes. It sounds like normal. I did a mod, using a 24 teeth gear instead, and the play was reduced a lot. I remember it was not straight forward, required some rearrangement. Unfortunately, I disassembled it long time ago (despite it is one of my favorite Technic models...), so I can't post any pictures.

Purism
kolbjha replied to Erik Leppen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I agree in your point of view. Personally, I don't see any problem changing a part in a way that Lego would do themselves. However, I am not sure that Lego never paint parts. What about the panels on 8007 C-3PO?- 179 replies

PFx Brick video test

Your review convinced me to back. Thanks for your clear walk-through! -
You are right! My bad, I saw BL prices world wide and didn't include VAT. But as somebody else have mentioned here, perhaps the new PF Receiver has the good stuff from V2. That would change the price picture, as you then (I suppose) could get it from S@H. Anyway, I just tried to comment the price pictures for the different alternatives, not discussing other aspects of SBrick. I use SBrick a lot my self (I have 5 of them), and think it is brilliant!

I see that the price for one SBrick now is $59. In addition, you will need a PF extension cable ($3 in S@H from US). Assuming that we need 2 x PF IR Receiver + 2 x PF IR Remote to replace this. These components will cost $49 in S@H. So all in the LEGO PF IR solution is cheaper. Buying PF IR Receiver V2 on Bricklink will cost apx. $20, even then the cost will be more or less the same as the pure LEGO S@H solution. Saying this, I agree that SBrick is a more powerful solution than PF IR.

Custom micro motor adapter
kolbjha replied to msx80's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, that 1x2 Technic brick for sure serves as a BI, and if I understand msx80 correctly, he is using a axle pin, as it makes connection to the motor axle easier. And to msx80: Very interesting indeed, thanks for sharing
