Love this. I wish I had some of those planet pieces from those SW sets.

Quinn is a woman who sees enterprise in chaos. As the lands of Roawia rip themselves apart under the malignant stewardship of Queen Galainir, Quinn returns to The Shade with her latest score. Not content to remain a lone gentlewoman thief forever, and with her name growing with her legend, Jackdaw Quinn begins to dream bigger than she ever dared before. She peers through the murk and shine of her uncertain, tumultuous future (just the way she likes it) and sees the beginnings of a real enterprise: a group of like-minded pick-pockets, tomb-raiders, and thieves of all calibers, working together under one banner, one purpose... hers! Of course, big ideas take big investment and didn't Quinn just hear, in this very tavern, that everybody in Garheim is too busy massacring each other to miss a few baubles?

I like the mood of it. Seems like a desolate place. Those brick-built roosters/hens are boss.

It's actually really easy to make this sort of thing yourself, Be. Shoot me a PM and I'll tell you how I do it.

Does anyone else here struggle with MOCs?
mccoyed replied to SerenityInFire's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Start small is the best advice. I was doing a bit of light MOCing before I found out about stuff like GoH or EB and I was a lurker on r/AFOL on Reddit. From my Flickr account, you can see my progression since I joined Guilds of Historica. So my next bit of advice is that you consider joining Guilds of Historica or something similar if you can. Unfortunately, right now there aren't any similar projects for other themes except Star Wars but apparently some are in the works. I've thought of starting a forum for either a Steampunk or Space Opera persistent MOCiverse like Guilds of Historica, but I would hate to disenfranchise from EB (so to speak). But really, it's really good to join up with a bunch of people creating a story together. Often, their contributions and ideas will inspire you and give you projects to help contribute to or complete on your own. Before getting into EB stuff and GoH specifically, I did a lot of stuff with Mobile Frame Zero and tried to bring the game to my group of friends and fellow tabletop gamers. It didn't really work out but that's a great thing to try if your parts collection is small (or full of technic pieces) and you like mecha and science fiction. -
Awesome tavern. Rockwork turned out good, nice use of space, and those stairs are so clean and awesome that I'm going to have to replicate the technique myself! I'm going to be doing a somewhat smaller tavern scene pretty soon for LoR. I hope you don't mind if I draw a little inspiration from here.

This was moved to Historic and it shouldn't be here. Who can I PM about that? Haha. Thanks Gun but you should expect many more Dark Tower builds to come. Most of 'em will be small. Yup. Thanks, bud!

LEGO Minecraft (Minfigure Scale) 2014 Rumors and Discussion

I totally agree. These are ugly, half-baked sets that feel more like spec/unfinished work than ready-to-sell Lego products. -
Age of Mitgardia - Archery Phase 2 - An Unexpected Tutor
mccoyed replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks. It was actually difficult to conceptualize how it should look. I finally settled on a shorter-distance archery range. One of the reasons my Phase 1 shows Alva retrieving a thrown axe is cuz at that point I wasn't sure what kind of distance to do. As for the axes in the snow... well, the angling is a result of getting the axes to stick into the grill pieces and not flop over. Ends up looking a bit unrealistic, but I also avoided just having axes laying around on their sides. Thanks! Haha yeah. It'd be nice if there was a term for axe-throwing similar to how there's one for bow-shooting. That said, I like turning it into a kenning because that works nicely with the Old Norse influence on Mitgardia. Yeah, I see what you mean there. I was originally going to do an axe in flight but it looked awkward so I dropped it. Might try it again sometime. It's a pretty liberal interpretation. I also thought of doing slingers but felt that axe-throwing would hew closer to what I envision for Mitgardia in general and Arnarvhall specifically. AoM is a great project because it gives a solid baseline for experimentation while also encouraging fledgling builders like me to try our hands at more conventional style builds as well. Thanks SK. You're not worried that the target colors imply treacherous intentions? Haha.- 22 replies

Very nice. I agree with Simon about the buildings. A good mix is both accurate and visually appealing.

Age of Mitgardia - Archery Phase 2 - An Unexpected Tutor
mccoyed replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
I'm trying to stand out because I don't want to overly retread the work of others, especially as I'm learning techniques and so on. I think I'm going to have to be a bit less interpretive when doing stuff like the Tower or Wall because I haven't really attempted a GoH-level traditional castle structure. I hope to be able to put my own spin on it, as all the builders here do. Thanks! Thanks! Especially Mitgardians. Thanks! I like those newish Lego axes because they, when you use short hafts with them, look like big clunky training axes. It is fun to mess with proportion and customizing how you use bars and axe blades. Haha. I wondered if anyone would mention this. It wasn't intended as a slight against Mitgardia, though Arnarvhall is a bit off the beaten path. These people see themselves as the custodians of an older way of life than how the more Cedrican influenced (let alone the other Guilds) have changed over time. That said, they aren't trying to spit on the flag or anything. It was just a way to get the Guild colors into the build without forcing a flag. I also think yellow stands out nicely as a target color. Thanks Scaevola. I try to be innovative! Thanks Kayne!- 22 replies

There's more going on now, but I still think you're not applying a lot of effort to the flooring, walls, etc. Is your Lego collection fairly limited or?

Awesome build. That is a very keen throne, too. I'm very impressed with how much detail and pieces you got in there and it doesn't look bulky or anything. One of the best ornate Lego chairs I've ever seen.

Asbjorn, Jarl of Arnarhvall, has no child of his own and has always treated Alva as a favored niece. Very little happens in his lands without his knowing it, and it was not long before he noticed Alva's interest in the martial. Early in the morning, when most are still asleep or just preparing for their day, Asbjorn helps Alva learn the axe and practice enough to have enough strength to hurl an axe as far as a Mitgardian warrior worth her icewater needs to. Though eventually she'll have to learn to throw even with ice and snow to trip her up, for now he has her brush the snow away every time they practice. The hard work is paying off. Alva strikes true more often than not. The unretrieved axes are a reminder of yesterday's regular training, when the young lads practice together. Later in the day, when they come to train, they'll have to march forward before all their peers and claim the axes and their shame. Alva has not had to claim an axe from the snowy dirt for days now. Asbjorn watches her carefully, knowing that she is almost ready to test herself against the others. Phase One here. AND OOPS. I left the title of this as Archery Phase 1 by accident (stupid auto-fill!). Can it be changed to Phase 2 by a mod please and thank you?!

Holy crap. That's an amazing build right there and a solid argument for brick-built ships. I'm not even sure I want to know how you pulled this off. :P

Thanks everybody! And may you have twice the number. Actually, since you mention it... I'm doing vignettes, probably 5 each, for each book as a small side project right now. Here's the next one.

No one had ever taken the test as young as Roland. Cort asked him to reconsider, but Roland was resolute. At this, Cort was not surprised. The choice of weapon, however, did surprise him. Roland Deschain was not known for his imagination.

Age of Mitgardia - Archery Phase 1 - Her Father's Axe
mccoyed replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks! You'll see! Alva will be the main subject of my Archery and the rest of my Barracks builds. It's a target, Bee. Made of straw, I would imagine. Haha. They tend to reuse things a lot in the Arnarhvall area. But I have yet to find a better piece to use in tandem with the modular axehead in this way, that's why it has featured in 3 of my AoM builds. Thanks Gun. I had this idea way back when I first joined and I was afraid someone else would go for it. Cesbrick was a very large inspiration here. His build had some of the best Lego trees I've ever seen. But the sliced section of the tree was actually a beaten up painted target. I usually use the medium tan grills for actual wood. Thanks LV. Thanks! I like the idea of it being sort of Alva's special tree as other trees in the area are the tall, thick, majestic Douglas Fir types or something. -
