Tyrn is a derivation of the Norse god Tyr (the one-handed warrior god). Alva is a relatively common girl's name in Norse-descended culture. Interestingly, Iceland maintains a heckuva lot of traditional names and so you'd see "viking" style place and people names there probably more often than in modern Scandinavia. So while I didn't borrow the names directly from Iceland, I get them from the same source. There are a few Scandinavians in Historica I think so they would probably have a better grasp of that and any other differences.

Sounds good. I may still mark it on a small section of the Mitgardia map so people know where it is as I build it up. I've been backreading all the threads since Historica began and I've been really inspired by so much. Especially the stuff where people try to come up with a home region and attendant builds and stories. I'm going to expand the characters I made for my AoM MOC into a larger regional thing. Thanks for explaining this to me. I'm actually pretty content with how Mitgardia deals with territorial stuff because it is consistent with how Scandinavia "worked" before the modern kingdoms were unified and established.

I just don't want to step on anyone's toes. For example, I want to base a small jarldom in the forests on the peninsula by Tradewind Bay. Is the assumption that there's enough territory to go around? It's less a desire to "claim territory" and more just know where things are.

Can we do it ourselves by editing the map he made? I have to admit I like the way Avalonia constantly changes borders and territories reflective of its membership.

Age of Mitgardia (free-build-challenge)

Is this the thread where we're given permission to proceed with Phase 2? -
Just beautiful work. I do wonder where everyone gets these neutral-expression orc faces, though. I have only LOTR and Hobbit ones and it's difficult to justify using them for a friendly orc tribe, which is something I've been kicking around since I don't see it often.

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Those are neat, especially the multimaterial ones. I have the means to make a lot of that stuff myself, though. @Ecclesiastes: Your point is beautifully made, sir. I must disagree. I think, in limited ways, a little material addition to Lego can't hurt. -
Thanks MKJoshA. I'll be posting my Archery Phase I soon and I'll make sure to do that. I think you're right that it'll look much better. The figplinths sorta demonstrate that.

Is this project still ongoing? I look at the Albion community build and wonder if we can rekindle Valholl.

I would also like to know if the map can be updated and new locations added.

Thanks guys. The homemade cloaks are gray felt that I think nicely simulates furs. I've also made little bundles tied with string for tradeable furs. You'll see that in a different MOC. The arm-rings are a Norse tradition during the viking era. Other pre-Christian tribes in North and West Europe also had similar ornamental, symbolic jewelry such as the torc. My spin on it is to include women in what was normally a coming-of-age tradition for , if I recall correctly, only young men, where earning an arm-ring symbolized their full membership in their community and bestowed on them mens' rights such as to raid, own land, get married, etc.

(Completed) Call to Arms! Battle of The Wither Woods (And LDD Ch

Just wondering, as a newbie, how this sort of event affects other guilds. Have a few questions really: Would members of other guilds declare for either brother and for what reasons? Would either of them hire mercenaries? Will there be a naval component to the battle?- 318 replies

I like the roof a lot. It looks better to me than many of the other attempts I've seen to do a thatched or straw look.

I'm a huge fan of this build, HammerBro. Obviously I replicated the fancy stands in my own, and I'll be playing with that idea a lot going forward. Given that my main Historica characters/story is going to involve a pirate crew, I also have to say I love that ship. Would you mind if I based a build on it? I plan to do at least one scene where the Hold Fast attacks a smaller ship and your design is probably perfect as a prize for them to take.

Barracks Phase 1. -
Thanks for all the kudos and advice. Really, I owe everybody on GoH for any MOC I make because I've learned it all by watching you guys here or on Flickr. EDIT: Had lots of problems with pics but figured it out, awww yeah :D.

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Please see: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=94785 For an example of what I mean with the fur capes. -
Here is my first MOC for Historica, an entry in the Age of Mitgardia community builds. I noticed that none of the other MOCs heavily featured the great big ol' axe so traditionally depicted as the Norse weapon of choice, and this inspired the build. Credit to HammerBro33 for the elaborate fig stand idea, though I put my own spin on it. NOTE: I'm still new so I don't know if/when I should claim UoP credits. If anyone can help me identify if this build qualifies for any, that would be awesome. Also, I'm not sure how to post pics to the body of my message. I used "Attach Image" in the Mitgardia main thread, but now it tells me my pics are too big (they are 800x600 or less). Help with that would be grand as well! UoP credits claimed: Landscape: Trees Anthropology: Life in Mitgardia Minifig Posing. Angle 1: Angle 2: Angle 3: Close-up: No figs: Cast of characters: Jarl Asbjorn of Arnarhvall (located in wooded peninsula west of Tradewind Bay). His Housecarl, Tyrn Arvidson (Asbjorn's most trusted warrior). A Thrasher-in-training, Alva Tyrnsdottir (who is trying to earn her father's approval and her own arm-ring).

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
mccoyed replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
A general question: I am getting into toying with fabrics and other non-Lego diorama type materials to accentuate my MOCs and was wondering what the GoH stance was on that. I know that homebrew cloth and string is accepted for ships, but what about for capes and other items? An example of what I'm working with is gray and black felt for fur cloaks and bundles of trade furs for Mitgardian shipping. The gray felt cloaks work much better than the lighter capes from Lego to capture the feel of heavy furs that would be worn in cold climates. Is this sort of customization acceptable? Are there hard or even soft limits on what can be brought in to add detail and flavor to GoH MOCs? I can show some examples later on if it helps. -
Gorgeous. I like how the stickers feel like local graffiti.

Great color consistency. You don't see as much blue, I've noticed, amongst the factions of Historica. Blue is the best. :P

New to Historica, huge fan of all your work. Constant source of inspiration all around, but I'd like to throw in with Mitgardia. Meet One-Eye, a native Mitgardian who has sailed halfway around Historica and back, but finds the best pirating waters south of Tradewind Bay, where the Avalonian ships fatten the sea. Soon you'll meet his crew, as salt a group as can be expected in these dangerous times. Drawn from all over Historica, they're united only by their loyalty to One-Eye and his growing legend. One-Eye is Captain of the Hold Fast. Eventually you'll see her too. So what say you, Mitgardia? Will you have a pirate for an ally?
