RC Maus Tank
Sariel replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
No, the torque is constant and depends on motor's internal gearing. Technically, you could run a motor at 1V and still get the same torque. It's just the mechanical power that diminishes because it's a product of torque and speed. -
The boring tank I've never really wanted to build, but oh well... Pics and reading: http://sariel.pl/2016/01/maus-super-heavy-tank/ The model is far from perfect, it has a couple of visual flaws, the most important being the turret which is 2 plates (6 mm) too tall by my count. The reason is, well, wedge plates. At this scale, the rear wall should be inclined so that its upper edge is 2 studs closer to the front than its lower edge. To make this wall come together with turret’s sides, which are built with plates, it was necessary to use a wedge plate whose edge is “cut” at 2 studs. Unfortunately, only one kind of such a Lego wedge plate exists – piece #47397 (left) and #47398 (right) – and it is 12 studs long. If we add to this the fact that there is a gap below the back of the Maus’ turret, this gives a side wall that is 13 studs tall in total, but it’s inclined and thus a little lower – just under 12 studs tall. The accurate height of the turret is 11 studs, and hence the difference – if there was a similar wedge plate, only 11 studs long, this would not be a problem. The model has also prompted me to develop a completely different shooting mechanism for my future models, because this one is just not reliable enough and it severely limits the main gun's elevation range. But it has done at least one thing right - it drove on the snow without problems (well, except for going uphill, which would require modding the tracks).

Eneloops are legendary, definitely the best AA batteries I have ever used, they can stay charged for really long and they handle cold pretty well. As for chargers, I have tested several until I came across Tensai products. They may be a bit costly, but they're pretty much like Rolls-Royce of chargers: http://tensai.eu/index.php/products/chargers

Here's my rodents-infested review of the B-model. I must admit, it has surpassed my expectations!

[REVIEW] 42050 - Drag Racer
Sariel replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I feel you, Jim. Getting even more curious about 42052's B-model (release these instructions already, Lego!). -
WeDo 2.0 - The future of PF
Sariel replied to BusterHaus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
IMHO the primary limitation, or the literal nail to the coffin of the original WeDo was the fact that if was running off USB at just 5V. The performance of Lego motors at 5V was atrocious, I remember PF M motors struggling to run simplest functions. If WeDo 2.0 is running at even lower voltage, that makes me seriously worried. Keep in mind, WeDo is designed specifically for education, not performance, hence I wouldn't expect it to be too versatile. I would also like to point out that the new plugs look all nice and cool, but they don't seem to be stackable, do they? -
[REVIEW] 42050 - Drag Racer

And here's my review. Kinda developed a love/hate relationship with this model: -
In today's episode of "creepy people from the web" - apparently the same person is posing as me at Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.pawel.9 He's created this profile a while ago using photo from my website and he's doing weird stuff, I know that he was spamming Nico71 with some messages pretending to be me. Does anybody know how to solve this? I did, of course, report him to Facebook as my impostor and they did exactly nothing about it. Their reply was that they can't verify that he is posing as me. I wouldn't bother you with it, but apparently he continues to contact other people as me. If you get any messages from this account, I had nothing to do with it.

Wacky Catbuster Mecha
Sariel replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that I've giggling most of the time while filming ;) You forgot that part about making a video on what a wanker I am ;) -
This will be a somewhat odd post, because I didn't intend to show this creation here at all given how silly and wacky it is... but it seems to genuinely amuse people, so maybe you'll have some laughter if nothing else. It has a few mechanical solutions that may look interesting, but it was really built just for, well, I believe the expression "sh...s and giggles" fits here perfectly. So yes, it's a wacky, crude hamster-like mecha. It has a moving nose, ears and whiskers and it fires anti-cat weapon called "Curiosity". It rides on two legs and can sit or stand. It's probably best if you just see it (*I'm not responsible for any rodents-related nightmares this video may give you!): Some photos, if you haven't had enough, are here: http://sariel.pl/2015/12/catbuster/

The stolen project has just been removed from Lego Ideas, no doubt thanks to your many reports. Thank you guys! :)
-
That's good advice in general. The internet is full of great people, but sadly there are also some folks soft in the heads out there.
-
Hard to say. This profile looks genuine, perhaps someone just used the name and photo to make a Lego Ideas profile.
-
It sure does. I've reported this fake profile to Facebook as an impostor, it even used photo from my website as the profile pic. Facebook's answer was that they can't see resemblance.
-
I've flagged this project, we'll see what good it will do. It was really smart of him to pick a MOC that has "sariel.pl" on the front bumper :) On another note, I may have a stalker problem. There's a person - possibly none other as the Lego Ideas guy - who has been trying to get my home address under various pretences for no less than 6 months now. I've blocked this person everywhere but they're still making new Facebook accounts and commenting at my fanpage. They were also asking my Facebook friends for my address and they've made a fake FB profile pretending to be me (gone now). I'm considering reporting this to police as that person apparently isn't going to stop. Does anybody have legal experience on dealing with online stalkers? I imagine it's an extremely difficult matter as all I have to start with is maybe this person's IP address and they're most likely located in another country?
-
Sorry to dig this thread up again but it has a surprising continuation. Here's my MOC presented by somebody as their own Lego Ideas project, and I have reasons to believe the same "you have to sell me your MOCs" is responsible: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/124552 Some people really are incredible, I guess...

Manias in building?
Sariel replied to jorgeopesi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Same here. Also, I keep interior pieces as unicolored as possible, even though they won't be seen once the MOC is complete. -
But he didn't call anyone specifically a random builder, that's the issue. Nor did he say that you need to be something to do something. These are all things you're pulling from somewhere (some body part perhaps?) yourself. The man said he knows mining better than average person, end of story. And you immediately called him rude and went into 4-posts long rant about posts count, YouTube views and whatnot. What the heck, man?
-
Seriously man: 1. Calm down. 2. Read again the "more knowledge about those machines than random LEGO builder" part. Does it specifically refer to Technivor? No. It means "average Lego builder". What M_longer said is that by working in mine, he's acquired deeper knowledge of mining machines than an average Lego builder. In other words, after working as a miner for a couple of years he DARED to suppose that his knowledge of mining machines is above the average. He knows his job, that's what he's saying. 3. How on Earth does that offend you?
-
I think you missed something. M_longer works at mine on a daily basis, he's got ton of experience with Sandvik loaders, and that is clearly what he meant - this is something a typical Lego builder doesn't have. How did posts or YouTube come into this? I'm puzzled as to where did you get it from. Also, I don't see how "random builder" can be an insult. I believe it was simply meant as a "generic builder". How did this make you jump onto posts count etc. is beyond me, frankly.
-
Excellent point. Also, while I share your hope that Lego will continue to operate into eternity, I would also like to remind you that it almost went bankrupt a little over 10 years ago. What happens to all these B-models instructions if Lego flops?
-
Can't say I have.Just like you said, there is usually so much engineering and parts I need behind every MOC that I can't really imagine parting with it. I'm simply unable to objectively estimate price that would compensate for these. And then, again - do I have to?
-
Thanks Andy but I'll pass :)
