1 and 2, I consider myself part of two lugs. I still occasionally display with my old LUG, and after a recent move, I also have been attending meetings with my local LUG (have a meeting today). I attend as many shows as possible, but only if I have something to display. Display is funnest part of the show for me, and I really enjoy talking and showing my creations with the general public. I also assist with setup. I would consider helping with the online community, although now may not be the right time.

Elevated Monorails
dhc6twinotter replied to lilongwe's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
There are several other monorails out there, although I've only seen one other suspended monorail. A friend of mine has built several monorails with 2x2 brick built track. Sliding doors are very possible with LEGO and aren't that difficult to build. On most LEGO trains I've seen, there is an extra motor mounted somewhere inside the train to open/close the doors. A few more videos: Unfortunately, I have not seen instructions on how to make motorized train doors. That is probably something you will have to figure out, but hopefully the videos above will help. -
Probably because there is a bit more involved than just flipping the gear around. Some of the structure has to be relocated to accommodate the moved gear.

I don't have 42008 yet, but looking at the instructions, I think the following will work: Book 1: Step 14 on page 35, replace the tan 20t gear with a clutch gear. Book 1: Step 4 on page 61, replace the black 12t gear with a 8 tooth gear. It looks like there is enough clearance for the clutch gear, but I'm not 100% sure. Your functions will also operate a bit slower.

Superb job designing the body. It reminds me of a Ford F-150 Raptor. I like the solid axles too! Very nice.

Great post! Excellent diagrams as well! Thanks! This is something I've wondered about, but I never experimented with a setup like this. If the motor were connected to the battery boxes in such a way that both battery boxes were on for a brief moment, this may work. I think it would be fine if all IR receivers were on for a brief moment. An IR receiver would be wired to both battery boxes though, and I don't know that an IR receiver will handle twice the amperage. I'll be using a similar setup for a future project that will have 16 or 17 functions. I will be using a dual gearbox. Another option is to use a bank of PF switches between the receiver and motors. 4 PF switches could be connected to a receiver (two per channel) with a motor connected to each switch. A motor would move the position of the switches. With two switches on, the other two will be off. It would be sort of an electronic "gearbox". This is something I will be using on a future project. If pneumatics are being used, multiple valves can be linked together to create a pneumatic "gearbox". Also a setup I will be using on a future moc. -
That's good to know! I knew the dual bulb light piece could be flipped to flash, but I didn't know the single bulb pieces were the same way. I always wondered that though.

I really liked 8258. I does have some manual functions, but otherwise, it's an awesome set! Lots of great mechanical aspects to it, plus it has a nice array of gears and other parts for mocing. Totally worth it, if you can find one cheap. 8043 Excavator is also a great set. Lots of PF stuff that comes in handy. The new crane is probably going to be a good starter set. It's pricey, but does come with lots of gears and some great parts. The Unimog is great as well, although I was a bit disappointing with the lack of complexity. The pneumatics are a nice plus though. Of the sets currently available, my suggestion would be to purchase the following: 42009 Mobile Crane MKII--lots of yellow parts and you can do a lot with 10 wheels. Lots of gears, 4 mLA, and 2 LA as well. Plus a L motor. 8110 Unimog--Not a huge amount of gears, but the tires, suspension parts, and pneumatics are nice to have. Buy whatever other PF parts you need from the LEGO website. They sell the remotes etc on an individual bases. If you buy multiple PF components at the same time, the usually give a discount. The crawler seems to be a good value for the money, so if you can find one, it's probably worth picking up. 2L motors, m motor, servo motor, V2 IR receiver, and LED lights are pretty nice elements to have.

The rechargeable battery is very nice to have. It is light and works well. -
lol..yeah. I just tell them that I don't play video games, and I watch very little TV.

"You have too much free time" is something I hear at just about every LEGO convention I display at.

I have a huge list of mocs that I want to build, but at the rate I build at, it would probably take me 20 years to complete my list. I just have to pick and choose what I plan on building. Most of my ideas just come from things around me, mainly trucks and machinery that I see as I'm driving. I also get other ideas from browsing the internet, often while trying to do research on a different project. I know what my next 2 projects are, and I have the next few mocs after that narrowed down to a handful. I also have several other mocs in various stages of being built, but it will be a while before I finish those. I generally have 2 or 3 mocs that I work on simultaneously. Building is the fun part for me, so once a moc is built, I may display it at a show or two, then disassemble it and use the pieces for something else.

Yeah, the side loaders are really neat. There are several different designs, with the one pictured above probably being a bit more difficult to build with LEGO. The side loader is something I've been wanting to build for a while, but I'll probably never get around to it...too many other projects to do. I believe somebody built a side loader earlier this year, but I couldn't find it in the search. Looks like it would be a fun build.

Do you have a link to your brickshelf folder? -
Are you only looking at movie names? If you're open to other geeky names, here are some aviation related ones: Piper Whitney Trent Allison Jet Tay Electra Douglas Mriya Page Siddeley Avanti Or maybe a name from an airline name: Sabena Ana Cathay Braniff Avianca Just a few more options. If I ever have a daughter, Piper would be first on my list, followed by Katherine or Katie.
