A decade in LEGO City-Town. Which set was the best?

So, a new decade has come. I still think it's too early to say that a 2008 set was from the previous decade but the numbers are telling the truth.

The question is simple. Which set from the City/Town/Modulars theme ranging from 2000 to 2009 was the best according to you?

My choice?

10184 Town Plan.

It is literally a town on its own. Lots of elements and things to look at and having that classic touch but also using some modern era ideas and looks at the same time.

I know, modular fans are going to point the finger at me...

Easily the bus stop set. I haven't gotten around to getting it, but it screams classic town.

In any case I pick Green Grocer. I was tempted to pick 7898 Cargo Train Deluxe, but it's hard to argue with the fact that after my last move I'm re-building Green Grocer but I'm planning on not rebuilding the cargo train.

I'd have to say that 10184 Town Plan is the best set of this decade. It's just so awesome, it has everything you need to start a town

I have to say 10027-1: Train Engine Shed. That is easily the best of the decade.

In my opinion the best are the modular buildings (café corner got me into Lego again as a 25 year old man...), the 10184 town plan set, the Eiffeltower, Medieval Market Village and the 10183 Hobby Trains pack.

Honestly, I have a few contenders.

1) 10156 Lego Truck

A great, classically designed truck, that actually looks like the real thing.

2) 7044 Rescue Chopper

Yes, it may not have come at the best time, but I think it looks extremely accurate (for a Lego set), and had great playability.

3) 10182 Cafe Corner

While yes, it may be an obvious choice, I think it was an amazing start for a new "theme." Many AFOLs would not have started building modular buildings without it, and it helped people up their skill level. It was also a great parts pack, too.

I forgot about that set. I love it, it is really realistic, and it has some play features.

I think the most important set of the past (resp. still ongoing) decade is Cafe Corner.

No other set had this impact and importance to AFOLs and Newcomers alike. It brought back more people to building and playing with Lego than any other set, while it´s not even the best Modular set of the available 4 so far (yes, I´m counting Market Street, too).

So according to the point of importance, Cafe Corner was the best set.

However, I have one Cafe Corner, but three Custom Garages.

Custom Garage inspired me more than any other set in the past TWO decades to imagine, invent and build MOCs. Plus it inspired me to start building my own tabletown with 6-wide vehicles, combine it with the Modular houses, MOC streets (I hope I´ll be able to share pics of my layout this year, once it´s completely set up), official cars, Indy sets and own cars. And I started to populate my city with all my friends and family as Lego minifigures, which I´ve never ever done before, not even in my childhood back in the 80ies.

So, for me 10200 Custom Garage is THE BEST SET period.

However, hard to pick a favorite. Cafe Corner was definitely the most important set, because it started the brilliant line of modular houses. Green Grocer is my favorite modular so far. Town Plan and City Corner are some of the best traditional town sets. I guess I just can't choose.

I vote for 7905 Building Crane, since it's the set that finally convinced me out of my own dark ages

It's not a huge set in terms of true size (i.e. weight) or piece count, but it stands impressive.

It's not hugely detailed as many exclusives, but it's fully satisfying to AFOLs.

It would be easier to vote one of the "biggies" like the Millennium Falcon, but 7905 was a set that everyone could afford, and this IMHO is a bonus.

As usual, I agree with you there, mate - obviously you're not the only one who was picky about this (or Siggy!). And this is starting to worry me. Same as the fact that we STILL don't have a :shudder: emoticon

Back to the topic at hand though - Cafe Corner, no doubts there. The Modular Buildings, along with the Exclusive Sets, is the best thing that happened to LEGO over this past decade.

Other than that, I also loved the Santa Fe Super Chief and the BNSF GP-38 train engines, well as the Market Street (which is not a "modular" per se, as we've discussed on numerous occasions).

I also liked the Town Plan, but that's about it. I've only built it out of curiousity - these bricks are way too cool to just sit around in the form of semi-unfinished buildings LEGO were always going to release a great set for their 50th anniversary, but I think the introduction of the Modulars was by far the better surprise.

One look at Cafe Corner and I had to have it. I'm 39 (and female) and it's been at least 25 years since I last built anything with Legos. But now I'm hooked. I recently purchased Green Grocer and the Fire Brigade. I wasn't a big fan of Market Street (don't care for the colors) but might have to get it just to make the street complete if I can ever find one that isn't MIB (because MIB are too expensive)

I have a lot of favorites... I have to say that overall, the Town Plan 10184 is probably the most complete and most of fun one to build. In the city line per say, City Corner 7641 has to be my favorite one. It reminds me of my 1980's firsts sets. I love it also for the fact that it includes a city bus... I am sold to this set just for the first bus in years (I drive a real city bus for a living...).

Although I prefer GG slightly one cannot deny CC's status as revolutionary and changed the way people MOC. GG changed the way people make interior designs in the MOC.

As usual, I agree with you there, mate - obviously you're not the only one who was picky about this (or Siggy!).

From the very first moment I knew that this issue was going to be mentioned.

Try to see LEGO as a part of our culture. It is a common thing to use this way of counting years in culture and popular activities (music, sports, movies, LEGO etc).

Besides, 2000-2009 is still a decade, one way or another.

Jokes aside though, it's not as if anyone really cares about that anyway. I mean, whether we take 2009 or 2010 as the final year of this decade, I don't think we're going to see sets much better or more popular than the Modulars or the Town Plan. For the record - my favourite Modular is actually the Green Grocer (although I have the feeling this year's Emporium will be even better), but I still had to put the Cafe Corner on top of my list there, seeing as this was the set which brought about the revolution...
