Difference between HE en creator trains
Jorrith replied to snaphappyninja's topic in LEGO Train Tech
That would be awesome! I still need to get the HE set, and i intend to modify it aswell. (either dual motor in one loco, or powering both locs) -
Difference between HE en creator trains

The older system was much simpler, but only had one channel (just power) running trough the cable. The new system has 2, and power: Gives more options, and besides, atleast the new cables are backward compatible. I think lego did make this change due to the PWM signal that is sent to the motors. -

What i did at first was exactly that. Small inside loop of 9V rails with 9V points, and the rest RC/PF rails. Even though this worked great, it limits the available track for 9V trains so eventually i started to collect more and more 9V track till a point i had enough to sell the RC/PF track. One thing i don't do is converting the RC/PF trains to 9V. They run fine on batteries, and the amount of usage these trains get does not justify a 9V motor or even rechargable batteries. -
What train fan wouldn't? Awesome layout, lovely trains, just wow.

Difference between HE en creator trains

The new cargo train 60052 is a nice set to start with, however it might be better to start with the 7939 cargo train because that one will be on sale more frequent now since the new set is out. (60052 will eventually replace 7939) You can get 60052 anytime when it's on sale. :) I've got the 7939 set before the new set whas out, and even though i don't particulary like the train in the set, (i preffer the red diesel from 3677, but that set is now discontinued for a while) it has a nice load of tracks and accessories. But it all depends, if you like cargo trains more than passenger trains, that's a start. Even starting out new, i would look for a good deal when purchasing a new set, even the 7938 red passenger train can be owned for just 80 euro's if you wait for the right deal. The 2014 sets will also go on sale eventually, so personally i'd go for those last unless you really want them. -

The Horizon express is also an advanced "expert" model that has more complicated building techniques and higher parts count, geared for lego fans, while the regular train sets are more geared towards children as a building toy. The HE might be pricey, but it's a great passenger train if not the best Lego has released in years. Still have to get a set or two, but it's not a matter of if, but more a matter of when. ;) As to track, if you do not intend to collect 9V era trains, you might be better off using the new PF rails. If you happen to collect 9V trains aswell like me, well... It might come in handy to have all your track of the 9V type (they interlock with the new rails, so you also could go hybrid using a 9V loop connected to a PF loop with 9V points) Personally i would advise against the 12V system. Even though it has benefits like remote controlled (wired) points, lighting, and it is a awesome system with powerfull motors, replacing a motor will cost you, and grey era sleepers crack very easily so it does not seem a logical investment to me. (imho) Same would be if you are investing in 9V track if you hardly have any 9V trains, or the need for a motorized train without PF. I love the 9V track simply because it has metal rails and i can run older trains, but the new PF system does have the big advantage that you can controll multiple trains on one track. -
The kit itself is not worth it imho. S@H prices are standard, sometimes you can get sets cheaper from other online resellers. S@H sells the Horizon express for € 109,99, but i can pick a set up locally from a online reseller for € 99,99. (in the netherlands) With that said, usually power functions components cost about the same or more with other resellers, if they stock them at all. The Lipo battery set would be nice if you are a heavy user, but otherwise it just does not justify the price. If you have 9V track and you are a heavy user, i'd personally go for two used 9V motors and be done with replacing/recharging batteries. (two used 9V motors can be bought cheaper than one PF Lipo battery with charger) And if you allready have a PF train, or even a few? Best guess is that you allready have a PF remote, so you really don't need another. For what you get, it's not bad, but it really depends on how much usage you expect to get out of it... I am still using normal alkaline AAA batteries that i've placed 6 months ago. Granted, i am not a heavy user, and i have 9V track. If i were to get the horizon express, (i still need to get it) i'd go for a dual motored front locomotive, standard battery box with regular AAA alkaline batteries. Why? It works for me. :) If you plan to run that train on a regular basis, in that case the lipo battery might be a good investment, but, if you have 9V track, a couple of 9V motors might also be a good investment.

Wow, that's an awesome train you have there.

Built it this morning, after receiving it from lego last saturday. I really like this set, the manual i was very carefull with, reading about how easy the pages become loose, and my manual unfortunatly has the same flaw. The set itself was a joy to build, lots of techniques i never could have thought of, and i really should get another set just for keeps because this set will sell like mad! I love this set so much it goes on the top shelf of my display cabinet, unfortunatly the haunted house does not fit, but i did something else.... Now wait a minute! We are ghostbusters, not monster fighters!

LEGO Train signature sprites: Where do I get them?
Jorrith replied to BlueSpaceman's topic in LEGO Train Tech
You can only have 4 images in your signature, so that won't work. I've added the URL of the place where to get these images to my sig, maybe others could do the same for easy finding. -
That's a nice train! Love it!

Here's some other train fun from last sunday.... http://youtu.be/_0mKoTij-3Y Enjoy!

Wow, great design! I really have to build a pair of these since i hated the original 7939 container car. Ever since i got the Maersk train, i converted the 7939 set containers to the maersk train size, but they are a bit too bulky for 20 foot containers.

LEGO Train signature sprites: Where do I get them?
Jorrith replied to BlueSpaceman's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I think those might be LDD screenshots... Either way, that's a way to do it. I am thinking of getting rid of my sig... Every time i buy a train, i am forced to update my sig image... (currently need to add 7938 and 4561, allthough the latter was bought for parts and is incomplete) -
A double HE is really long, so if you have a small track, this might not be the best set to run on it. My first passenger train is the 7938, it's kinda small, but looks alot like the train that is on the Leeuwarden-Groningen track. For a small track, it's really a nice train. That said, i still need to get a HE, x2. :)

It could use some white rims on the wheels, but other than that, it looks awesome! Hmm... Maybe i'll mod the vehicle that came with the 3677 red cargo train set to match this one. And also love the background!

Ramps, crossover track and two levels layout + GoPro
Jorrith replied to technicgear's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Great fun huh? Love your track layout, when i have enough track i gotta try making an extra level like you did! What train did you use? 7939? (i recognise the container car) Impressive speed, without derailing.
