  1. If your only defense is pointing out a minor spelling error, then Avalonians have a ways to come.
  2. I got the OK from the Mrs. So this is a definite possibility. ----- Back to jiving back and forth: Hammerhand: but Avalonia is much younger than Kaliphlin (which is a couple thousand years old, and at one point ruled all of the continent), Avalonia only forming in the last few hundred years, it was a warring people, a people shrouded in mystery and magic. They filled the westlands and the graceful outer isles with story, but they were not well-read people. They had stories and oral histories, but it was we Kaliphlins who brought the common tongue, numerals, and writing to the fledgling civilizations to the west. Granted, some immortal beings such as the elves lived in Avalonia for many millennia, but they were not always keen on sharing their knowledge with the vast human population that ruled the many lands of the west. Kaliphlin have numerous universities, Avalonia has few major centers of learning. It is not a bad thing to be a young people, some say that gives you all more heart, where some of Kaliphlin's oldest blood thinks more callously with their pocket book. Out of the 9 Great Scholars of the Antiquity, only one is not Kaliphlinian.
  3. You would be correct, I couldn't find a synopsis of the book, but I assume that the Newberry plays a part?
  4. I don't think I could bring a display piece (if there is still room, even.) but I could probably make it to Chicago that weekend, there is a library I have to go to for research in Chicago anyway, I could make it a business/leisure trip.
  5. Great work, I am looking forward to where the story is going! White cardboard / poster board or a sheet will allow you to avoid future faucets in your pictures
  6. Hmmm... if enough people are going to Brickworld, I may change my plans and come too. It would be great to meet a bunch of GoH people.
  7. Rodi, I would play your game. But, I like board games. The mechanics are pretty good, and I think it would be fun. I see one gaping hole -- it is a game and not a building community driven story project. Let me stop and say that perhaps making something much different than GoH is the right option, a game like this would be really fun. As I said, I would play it. However, this option is not going to drive team stories like an open ended world with light game mechanics. Yes, teams are going to build together, but since building seems a bit linear in objective, there is no real incentive to build a story. I think many of the people wanting a GoH clone in the pirate realm wanted the story aspect along with the building critiques. Still, this option would give the forum something unique, and it would be interesting to play. I think some story can be adapted into this system, but at the end of the day, it is a game more than an immersive world. I am just throwing out a small critique, but the system itself seems doable.
  8. Sorry, Gilbert, Penkid and Hammerhead misspoke, they meant to say the second best guild. But, really, great to have you in GoH! Welcome aboard!
  9. Well, we do seem to have a backlog here. I think one of the problems is that not everyone comes to this thread first to look at new MOCs. I wonder if adding a tag to the title [uoPNeed] or something a long that lines would not help. Then when it succeeds or fails, we post back in this forum, and I erase that tag from your title. What do you all think?
  10. I also give it a +1 interior. I really like it! The wall design is very cool... definitely reminds me of a museum display.
  11. Since the project started in 2011, Guilds of Historica (GoH) has acquired its own lexicon of sorts. Below you will find a little help to understanding the universe. (Under Construction) Glossary: Ang - Rogueang, guildleader of Avalonia AoM - Age of Mitgardia building contest Av - Avalonia Beery or CBB - Captain BeerBeard (a builder) Book One - The first cycle of challenges, 1-6 of the Guilds Project. Book Two - The current cycle of challenges for the project. C(x) or Ch (x) - Challenge (x) ie: C1 = Challenge 1, Ch 2 = Challenge 2 DM or DaMax - DaMaximus (A builder) Ecc - Ecclesiastes - Guildleader of Mitgardia GNAR - Great Naval Arms Race competition GoH - Guilds of Historica HSS - Historica Settlements Challenge Kali - Kaliphlin LD - Legonardo (A builder) NM - NiceMarmot (A builder and mapmaker for GoH) Nocty - Nocturnus Revolword - The main bad guy of the Book One storyline SG - Sultan's Gate, either the place in Kaliphlin or the Kaliphlin community build SK - SoccerKid (A builder) SKA - SkaForHire, guildleader of Kaliphlin UoP - University of Petraea (sometimes referring to the challenge, not just the place in Kaliphlin) ZC - ZCerberus, guild leader of Nocturnus Rundown of the guilds: NOTE: Sorry if I did not include your name in this round of the glossary, I either was tired or your name does not usually get abbreviated in normal chat on the board.
  12. Because you said you wanted feedback... Isn't that mast too far back? I think that original image may be wrong too. I am looking for other examples right now to see, it just "feels" wrong. Also, I like the vertical black bars, I don't think they have to be evenly spaced. They make the ship look less pixelated in the close-up shots, which is how this type of build often looks in close-ups (I don't really like the building style, but that is probably preference). I like the tan deck, it is a good offsetting color and so far looks very slick. The aft is nice, but I am not sure that it connects right in the interior. It seems that that space would be boarded over, or there would be a clear way down into the hold from there. All in all, I am looking forward to your final product.
  13. Awesome build, so alive with contrasting color. I like the training men in the courtyard. That tree is pretty awesome, but the closer you get the more the barrels become evident, and distracting. Far away shots, they are amazing looking. Overall, great job.
  14. As in off topic? We really don't have one. We go off topic in these guild threads then meander our way back on. As I said, I don't think the chat was off topic.
  15. Not that I know of... I knew that he used the word "gimp" in the tutorial, so I searched gimp tutorial map and it came up.The search does seem pretty pesky at times, I didn't know about the two year limit, but that does pose a problem. I stuck that tutorial in our front page for future reference though.
  16. The problem with this is that it limits the storyline for GoH "Middle Ages" If the same four nations exist in the same locations (only with colonial possessions) then it would be hard to run any events where the guilds were at war at each other in the early period. I think it would be cool, because then when someone was a bit bored with castles, they could represent their alterego on a ship centuries later in the pirate forum. However, I am not sure we could adequately squeeze the five guilds into a post Renaissance colonial scheme suitable for a pirates project.
  17. IF you have a detachable flash, turn it towards your ceiling or wall and "bounce" the flash for softer light. Also, you could use filters. Most photography lights require a filter, be in the photo box or a diffuser between the light and the object. Building wise, good first build for the project! I personally have a hard time getting behind DC's 1x1 round plate style (except when the master does it himself) but I think this looks pretty good, it has a different, jungle temple feel to it. Again, it is a good start. Forgot to comment on the door, I really like that!
  18. Well it isn't a two person chat, but it is a guild chat... I don't think what they wrote really was directed at each other, they were just the two people on and responding at the time. Nice Marmot has a map tutorial somewhere... Not sure where the link is, but it is pretty good. I thought we had it in one of the main threads? Oh look what search has brought up...
  19. I would say ZC is the "steward of GoH" That would be who you should ask. I am not sure if anyone technically owns the "rights" to it, as none of the original four guild leaders are still here, and the story and world has been populated by over 100 different people. Ecc is the leader of Mitgardia, Kabel is a regulator. ZC runs the show.
  20. I recycle some material, the names of most of the characters I use are tributes to my friends characters in role-playing games. I tend not to recycle fiction that I have written, just in case I ever get to the point that I want to start shopping it (way to busy with shopping non-fiction right now.) Point is, I think names are probably fine to recycle.
  21. Yeah, it is somewhere in that vicinity, but for some reason I want to say it was actually in the mountains? It is not listed in the Wiki, and I am not sure where that would be in the threads. On that map, there are three rivers close together that could potentially be this location, so it would not be hard to just switch one of the locations if Everlast ends up being in the same spot. Absolutely. Sometimes the stone is painted, sometimes other types of rock are imported, and then of course, there are locations that have a natural abundance of different kinds of rock. It is up to you to figure out what you want to use. And you can always explain it away with story. That is pretty interesting news. Not sure exactly how that would work, but it would be cool to have some Historica themed MOCs at shows/events in that country as well.
  22. Very interesting build. The gray plate kind of throws it off though, if you have a dark green plate available, it may work better as the water.
  23. Man, I can barely keep up -- Old and new in this conversation this week, excellent! My hands are not dextrous enough to tie the knots... So I don't do ropes and cables either. I rather imagine them at this point, unless they hold up sails. Lots of good discussion here about locations. I think we definitely need a powerful city on the East Coast, so that Nocturnus doesn't creep down our coast. On this map: http://guildsofhistorica.wikia.com/wiki/File:Kaliphlin-north-east.jpg There are two rivers, one that goes from Petraea through the lick of salt, near Sultan's Gate (not on the map) and into the mountains. Perhaps there is an underground river that could connect it to the river that is on the eastern side of the mountains. I realize that the mountains would push water in both directions, but perhaps a secret lake exists that feeds both rivers? This would make a good location for a new city on the coast at the mouth of that river. Since it does not have a name, the owner could even name the river. This would make whatever city there a pretty powerful trade city because it has a direct route to the interior, access to mines in the mountains, and access (via a portage at the falls however) to the capitol. It is a pretty good spot, and could be developed into the Jewel of the East. If Aranethan wanted to put Nasitadal there, we could change the geography a little more, and make it a wide delta where many smaller rivers branch out or meet. I forgot to congratulate you also, so congrats! Wow, the improvement is spectacular. And yes, now we have 3 MOC experts, which may make us tied for first! I expect the rest of you to become one in the next year. --- Also, after looking at Eryn's Wyndgardiam, maybe we should just vote to make Easter Kaliphlin just like that... LOL. Pretty awesome story, I don't know how I missed it the first time.
  24. I agree, great anchor! I like the brick built sails. And that hull is beautiful, I look forward to the completed moc. The subtle avalonian colors on the side are a nice touch too!
  25. Not to hijack the Avalonia thread, but yes, that is why I threw in the free agent idea and the more dynamic gold idea. Those are some things that would make their setting a bit different from ours. Although, So far it is the same 8 or so people posting, I wonder if there is even enough people interested over there. Remember this is at least the third, if not forth time this has been brought up.
