Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Yikes, that sounds terrible. I hope you pass it quickly! -
Green soils quickly, besides in the whole history of Historica we have been very lenient on flags and variations of flags. That is why there is no official crests for any of the guilds. If these were from the imaginary land of Lenfald, I don't think they would be full of obvious northmen warriors.

Just a reminder to everyone. The Freebuild deadline for quarter 1 has passed. Please make sure to update your freebuild registry so that when we tally them, yours will count. Also... things are now heating up on the seas. We may need to begin building ships to protect our trade (hint hint, upcoming challenge.) -

Mitgardian Attack on the Sea Elves Mitgardians have become anxious in the last month. After claiming Kaliphlin pirates were molesting their trade, they have deployed the navy at sea to “deter” these pirates. One of the more feared squadrons out of the Great White North is the Black Squadron. It consists of three vessels, a fighting platform Cog called the Loki, a small cog called the Fishmonger’s Wife, and a raider class vessel called The Grogslaughter. The Black Squadron makes port at a small harbor in the south of Mitgardia. It is so effective because all of its officers graduated from the Mitgardia Naval Academy in the same year and were deployed together. They have a strong bond that has led to their undefeated record on the waves. Class portrait of the class of the year 94 AH: DSC_0821 by skaforhire, on FlickrThe bottom From left to right. The top row, graduating the top of their class and earning the Thor’s Shield for their class, Alvin Arlonson and Porter Thorsfoot .The middle row is Jack Parso and Sven Yarlson, all four of these officers are on the Grogslaughter. In the bottom row: Harold Vales of the Loki, next to him is the man who graduated dead last, Nelbert Northman, next to him is Guindis Ogleson both of the Fishmonger’s Wife, and last is the Loki’s captain, Marl Turnstorm. A standing navy is an expensive luxury, so most of the time these ships are in drydock and the crew is furrowed. – But not this year, Mitgardia on heightened alert has sent its ships to sea. The Fishmonger’s Wife: DSC_0795 by skaforhire, on Flickr And the Loki DSC_0777 by skaforhire, on Flickr The Sea Elves. Sea Elves, sometimes called Sea Gypsies, are a people estranged from their homeland. They rarely come on land other than to sell the fish they have caught and to repair their boats. Sometimes they don’t even come to land for these matters, as they prefer to trade at sea. They are pacifists, and don’t carry weapons. They prefer to run from a fight. This makes them common targets for piracy. Because of this, certain bands of Sea Elves have made pacts with navies of some guilds to protect them. By far, the largest population of Sea Elves claiming allegiance to a guild fly the Kaliphlin flag. Kaliphlin traders have found great value in protecting the Sea Elves and making them lasting trading partners. Sea Elves take in anyone who wants to join them in their life on the sea. For this reason, the Sea Elves are a diverse people, most being half-elf or fully human. Long ago almost all Sea Elves were pure elves though. Here is a band of Sea Elves fishing in the waters North of the Mystic Isles DSC_0652 by skaforhire, on Flickr. Sea Elf children learn to work close to their parents early on. Babies are often kept above deck so that they learn fishing before speaking. DSC_0660 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0665 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0647 by skaforhire, on Flickr These poor sea elves have just spotted warships on the horizon. The wind is not in their favor, they must pray that the Mitgardians approaching are good law-abiding citizens of the sea. DSC_0791 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0799 by skaforhire, on Flickr It’s the Loki and the Fishmonger’s Wife. The Grogslaughter is being refit. Still, two thirds of the squadron is more than enough power to stop the Sea Elves. They have no choice but to come alongside the Mitgardians and submit to search. DSC_0783 by skaforhire, on Flickr But these Mitgardians have been bored at sea for nearly a month now. They want action, not routine stop and searches. Their captains seem willing to give this action to them. DSC_0792 by skaforhire, on Flickr Guindis Ogleson orders a boarding party to go aboard the smaller Sea Elf Craft. DSC_0806 by skaforhire, on Flickr Ogleson kills the father of the baby on board this ship, and while the mother looks on, a Mitgardian sailor throws her baby to the sharks. DSC_0811 by skaforhire, on Flickr She is then skewered by another Mitgardian who says “Look Cap’ I shows ya how to fish!” and then hoists her body over the edge to bate the sharks. Her last thoughts are happy as she knows she will be with her family soon. DSC_0815 by skaforhire, on Flickr The Sea Elves on the other ship fair just as poorly. The Mitgardians from the Loki make the elves jump from the ship and swim as fast as they can. Then, the Mitgardians use them as target practice. The youngster on this ship was killed by Harold Vales’ own sword. The Mitgardians finished murdering the rest of the crew and sunk the smaller junk. They then sailed away with a prize crew aboard the larger Sea Elf ship. The Officers of the class of 94 know they will make a pretty penny selling this boat in a Mitgardian port. The Officers have a good laugh about it and look forward to taking more prizes from the Kaliphlinites. DSC_0778 by skaforhire, on Flickr DSC_0809 by skaforhire, on Flickr Mitgardians high-five after throwing a baby to the sharks. A note on the builds: I wasn't trying to make water, I didn't have enough time for that. I used a few wave crests I had made a while back strategically in some of the pictures. The MOC sea elf ship was an attempt to make a larger boat that fit with the smaller orient adventures boat. I have like 11 of those, and I was trying to find some alternatives to diversify the sea elf fleet.

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
I just use both, but as Gedren said, I just try to keep the torsos from mismatching. I don't have a problem with different "ethnicities" in my Lego world. Especially figs of darker skin color! There are like 6 black heads and 2 heads that could be used for Indians! (actual sub-continent Indians.) -
I am busy trying to figure out how that held together with no support on the water..... wow. +2 for all!!!! haha. er... +1 but, really good job.

+1 to all builds, simple yet very nice!

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
Excellent work! Despite that I shouldn't be building anything because of my workload right now, I actually have many MoCs in process and have one finished but can't post it because it is in a storyline further down the road, but I haven't finished the MOCs that come first! But I do have one for you Mitgardians almost ready.... Just need to live through this weekend of hell-work in order to get a chance to finish it. -

Pay to take the class? haha. No I agree with Rogueang here, slavery is too heavy of a topic for a light-hearted discussion. I would assume that most slaves in historica would be less the chattel variety and more the traditional servant / POW variety. I really don't want to think of it past that, and as I stated from the beginning of my character, he is against it. You will probably see very few, if any MOCs depicting slavery from me because I am a little uncomfortable with it existing in a world based around a child's toy to begin with. But Some people like their realism, and I am not going to tell someone what to do with their toys. -

To attempt to chop down trees, therefore to cold to bother to swing an axe... I thought he based his scale off something else, and I thought it was a story about how long it took the king or a diplomat or someone to get between to official locations (Cedrica and Albion, maybe?) -

That is about equivalent with actual Texas climate. Although there is no arctic, the other three environments exist. With a fourth environment being the mountains. I didn't grow up here, but I have been told there are geography classes on just Texas taught. It is a big place. I can't remember where NM's original numbers came from, but he derived them from a canon storyline I believe. Like, Rogueang, I think Historica would be quite bigger, but NM numbers were really good IIRC. -

Sorry about my late night spelling, but it is semantics. One would not want to shatter their axe because the trees are frozen, so they are not willing to swing the axe, therefore it is too cold to swing an axe. -
Queenscross DSC_2099 by skaforhire, on Flickr Anyone else that has built for QC, let me know and I will link you here. Since there was never a real "thread" for the buildings at Queenscross, I am just going to attach small pictures with the link back to flickr for the many buildings from that build. A lot of good candidates there! Although. you all could always put down your arms and colors and enjoy Kaliphlinian Annexation. Dextrus Flagg makes the greatest ruler. So, is it just me or have most of the images of Avalonia maps gone away in the last 20 posts. Only a few of the maps show up, even though people are referring to maps I assume they had posted in their original post. -

I was going to come in here and drop a load about the history of slavery and the vast differences between Medieval Europe, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, African, Age of Discovery, and Post Bacon's Rebellion (the kind most people think about when they are talking about the Old South) slavery, but I see that we have moved onto the finer points of life in this guild thread: what Mitgardians use to do their business. Now I know why they buy so much of our scented oil. -
Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
We already have a vast picture book section in the Great Library of Barqa, maybe we can have some scribes make up some copies for your fledgling library? I mean, it will take Milena for enough good Mitgardian writers to come about, that is if you start the learning to read process soon. Actually, we will just send teachers to participate in your rudimentary education system... I can see it now Dereek Zoolandson's Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too. Also, we have more colleges than just the UoP, that is just the flagship university. Finally, I see the point about oil for reading rather than heating, but for areas that do not have wood (and there are lots of them in Mitgardia) the oil is essential. It is of higher quality than whale blubber oil, and burns brighter and longer because of the refinement. Besides, rumor has it that it has been too cold in Mitgardia this winter to swing an axe, the ruthless forests have claimed many a shattered axe in this season. -

Sorry all, I would go through these builds but I am not even supposed to be checking EB right now because of workload issues. I should be back in the clear in about a week, and if there is anyone still hanging on, I will go through them and give a yay or nay. -
Your figbarf is impressive! I really enjoyed a lot of the combos.. It is funny, because I have the same combo for some Kaliphlinites as you do! Great minds think alike! (OR at least some kind of minds...)

No, they are too busy shivering in this harsher than harsh winter. Don't worry Kaliphlin is on the way! After they get warmed up maybe they will make snowmen on Nocturnus' lawn? -
The chain windows are great... I may have to borrow that! Great build, I am glad you are using your talents throughout the map of Historica. Always a pleasure looking at your stuff!
