Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ScotNick replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Not saying that it doesn't look good next to other modulars, but this building doesn't look interesting to me. First of all it doesn't make use of any special techniques. Nothing about the facade looks special, the escalators are just copied from the Grand Emporium, and bookshelves like these have been seen multiple times. All the official modulars had something new about them (e.g. a new technique, which hadn't been used before), but this building doesn't have anything like that. I don't know why I should support this as anyone can come up with an idea as simple as that- All you need is the bricks. The colour isn't special either. -
I think the tender looks good, and regarding the power functions motor: you could keep in the middle (which I think looks better) if you do it like Andrew Harvey did it for his LNER Tornado: And regarding 2 coloured wheels: as Big Ben produces blind drivers, why not put rims on those? We'd just need someone to produce metal rims to put over those blind drivers. That way power pick-ups for the 9V rails would be possible without the 9V motor

Well today I just saw this pic:

Oh, I didn't realise this till now, it might be as you say. First I thought this part might be in a 2015 set and not yet in the part lists, but it isn't. However I tried my hands on replacing the 6x12 plate with regular bricks: This way you can achieve the same results with different parts, which allows you to work with more colours. The tiles are fixed to this part. Hmm, I didn't think my version looked that good, it's just the Maersk with Maersk blue replaced by yellow. But I can post the lxf if you're interested.
-
Hi, I've had the same thought as the Maersk is very expensive and I'm rather fond of the design than the colour. As I already have many yellow parts I want to build a yellow version, which I modified a little bit: The small section above the sloped white stripe can't be filled with bricks in LDD, but hopefully with real bricks it will be possible. I don't know if I wanna build the truck and cars, but the engine is on my to-do list. Edit: I found some other versions: Norfolk Southern Locomotive by , John Meyer on Flickr And this one seen in this topic MOD: Yellow Maersk Loco 10219

Nice interpretation of this train!

Have ridden these times quite often and they are spot on! Haven't seen these coaches as good as yours!

The Beauty and the Beast: FRECCIAROSSA 7 studs vs/ 4 studs...

Great design, you got the curves perfectly right. Also love the monorail version -
Looking great, only the driving wheels look a little bit too small, but that's hard to change
-
Thanks for the comments guys! Yeah, a pity many parts aren't available in some rare colours, but that's the fun of building with Lego, right? But you're right about Big Ben Brick's limited colour variety, but I think the black wheels fit nicely as well. It's just a regular RC wheel on some stacked 2x2 round plates. Hahaha that's my big question as well I have no idea how it will turn out to be, but first I'll have to do some testing. I want to at least try to have the weight of the locomotive supported by the large drivers but guided by the trailing wheels. I know nobody has done that before, but it might work if I move the pivoting point of the trailing wheels as close to the drivers as possible. I really really want that to work out If it doesn't work out I'll have to make the drivers "float" over the rails by just a millimeter and fix the rear trailing wheel to the body. Then the driving behavior of the engine will be just like that of a bogie coach. Oh yes, the stack is a small train wheel . Sorry you can't see it on the shown image, here is a close-up of the valve gear: It looks like it won't work but I've tried it out with real bricks on an earlier prototype and it works.

There are good ones out there. Here are some examples to give you an idea:

I didn't like the set either at first glance, but if you know what Steinkopf has done to his version you really like it: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=101357 With some mods you can make a pretty decent train with the 60051.
-
Thanks! It's as clean as it is because the prototype is that clean too The problem is there are many pictures which are underexposed which makes the colour appear darker, like this , but then there are also pictures like this So it's hard to me to find the correct colour, although I think this picture is the closest in terms of colour But then Lego's green is too bright. What I think is that Lego's normal green can't do justice to the elegant green used on many British steamers. Therefore I decided on using Lego's dark green, as it keeps the elegant look. The best choice is in the middle, but that's not possible. Also the dark green looks much darker on the render than it will in real life. Thanks for your thoughts!

I don't post very often here, but just recently I've finished my design of the GNR C1 engine. I've been wanting to build this engine since many many years, because she is beautiful: she is neither a giant nor a small shunter, but still she pulled expresses like the Flying Scotsman. When I joined the forums about 2 years ago I showed a pic of my first take on the C1 in LDD. Back then she looked like this: I don't know if you remember, but some of you wanted to see more pics. As I'm a perfectionist when building with bricks I have been redesigning this model many times to get the right look. I was never happy with my redesigns, so I just kept changing bits. Eventually I got a pretty decent result: I redid the tender with inspiration from from Carl Greatrix's Dean Single, therefore the tender now uses BBB medium wheels.drivers. The large driving wheels will be blind BBB XL drivers. I tried it with the flanged drivers first, but with them come many problems. e.g. I can't hide them under the splashers anymore. The valve gear might look like it won't work, but I've tried this out and it works. One thing I learned from this is that you have to keep improving your model when you're not happy with it. I don't know whether I want to power her or not, but IF I power her, I'll probably put an M-motor in the boiler and power all the wheels, but that remains to be tested in real life :) Comments and constructive criticism are welcome!!! Cheers, Nick

I know, but it doesn't say that there will be TWO new city trains, it just says, that there will be one city train and the heavy haul train. We have heard both rumors in this topic, so nothing too new.
-
No, it just says that you can add the "heavy haul train" to your city (=town), nothing to do wit the city theme IMO.
-
That's a great looking engine! Nice incorporation of the PF components as well

As many have said about flex track, it is noisy, doesn't look good,.... But I found them to be useful when I wanted to separate 9V track sections, when each section is powered by a different transformer, cause the 9V motor makes it over the 4 studs without slowing down. Though I don't know if that damages the motor, cause I currently don't have a track setup.

The problem I see with such larger engines is that they still have to pass Lego's tight switches.

Well, the wheels are a problem with every Lego model built 6 or 7 studs wide. Also that huge flange is a problem as, as it makes the wheel appear bigger than it actually is. The driver diameter of the 57xx where only a little bit smaller than standard gauge, so the wheel should be smaller than Lego's gauge, which is about 11.5 plates, whereas the large Lego driver is about Lego's gauge. So the solution would be in the middle, but that is exactly the problem And yes, I've built many Railway Stories engines, I made a thread some time ago, which I should actually update. I just recently uploaded them on Mocpages (if you're interested at all) : http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/404664 And yes, I based my model on Duck when I started designing it. I didn't realize this difference in designs for a long time, but also I didn't change this model since about 2 years. But I myself changed a little bit and now go for more realism than some years ago, when I actually designed this model. And as you might see here, the 57xx isn't flat at the top (I'm probably going too far here ) The only way you could model this is angling 1x2 curved slopes. I tried it with 1x3 slopes, but they're too long: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=552074 (still moderating) Anyway, I'll try my best to help, if I can- 26 replies

I really like your 57xx, you did a great job! I think Lego's driving wheels look a bit oversized, but BBB medium drivers might look a bit undersized I tried my hands on the 75xx too, and after looking at it now I think my cab is too long. But I also got the boiler 14 studs long, so there is a difference Anyway I don't want to spoil your thread, but here is my model if you want to see it: I might adapt some of your ideas, hope that helps- 26 replies
