The UK price looks surprisingly good. I wish they had kept the golden octopus from the movie, I loved that stern so much.- 158 replies

AoM Barracks Phase 1 - Recruiting for the Watch.

Very nice, I love the look on his face, really funny. Good use of the Hagrid body. What helmet is the guy on the left wearing? Gimli? -

Keep them in tight with a row of bricks on each side until you are ready for photos. I nearly used this technique for my Temple of the Mad Monks but they fell out each time I moved it. Nearly turned me into a Mad Monk! -
^A minifig with turban is 5 bricks 2 studs (and a bit) high, I calculate your ceiling clearance on the green-domed entrance at 5 bricks 1 stud. yes, I did.I thought I had a whole bunch of those clips in brown but it was They might work in LDD but not so well in real bricks, I think. Anyway, lovely technique on the tree. I think the nearest colours to most of the palm trees here are light bley for the trunks. but I can never get it to look right in bricks.

Nice build Yooha, I really like the left hand roof treatment, the gateway and the chain window. I would raise the heights of the domed entrance by a brick and of the gate bridge by quite a bit as they are a bit too low for minifigs. I love the palm tree design, but I think the tan clips would look more realistic in brown or green (I live surrounded by lots of types of palm). It's great to see you building in Kaliphlin and I hope you will set more scenes in our fair cities.

Good to see you back CBB, we've missed you. Looking forward to some more awesome from you  -
This has been an excellent series so far, your builds are all technically very interesting with inventive parts use. This is by far my favourite as it is much richer in content and ambition than the other builds. Kaliphlin always seems to bring out the best in builders from other guilds (dG, CBB, ZC, I'm thinking of you!) I especially appreciate the red roof, the dark tan/light bley facade, the staircase, colour use, the sense of vitality from minifig posing, and of course the parrot! Great stuff.

Great start Hammerhand! The trees and half timbering are really nice but for me the highlights are the fireplace and candle stick. Mikey B is right about the stud walls. Building for photographs is hard because all the gaps show up very conspicuously, the usual solution is a double row of bricks for walls. I look forward to more from you

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion

The PGTC will buy up all the heating oil you wish to sell at lower prices on cash, futures or options markets. We're long, Mitgardia is short, and they're inventing skirmishes - in midwinter. -

I really like the cleanliness of this build, and the story is as always compelling. I echo the comments on colour use and choice of helmets. it looks really nice. The elongated octagon shapes are a very nice solution on the towers. My only criticism is the cropping on the right hand palm tree in the second shot. The Black lions look superb, are the dark tan capes custom? +1 UoP both claims.

Beautiful. As always your presentation and photography are exceptional, the minifig choices are fantastic. I like particularly the restrained colour use, the doors (will remember that one for future usage!) and the stairs. +1 UoP both claims.

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion

If you are just looking for pointy ears, the CMF11 elf hat is about $1. I find I have a plentiful abundance of elves after a few LoTR sets and some CMF series 3 duplicates. I have rarely used the pointy ears though, I prefer Exo force heads for elves. -
My son really wanted an elephant in here because elephants are cool. It would have been too big for this build so we agreed that the orcs run the bulk transport to the bottom of the escarpment via elephant, then the townsfolk transfer it to smaller lots via camel, mule or horse to get it up the pathway. A bit like shipping lines. There's always more backstory than I write up in the build pics!
-
I agree it would be cool, but I don't think it would sell outside China (btw CMF pandas are flying off the shelves here, there is clearly appetite for Chinese themes). Oxford bricks have some nice accessories and themes for Korean history which you could possibly adapt.

Thank Gunman, this one is all about the colours and patterns. Thanks Gideon. I originally planned to build the front side of the gate with a shanty town next to it but it just got too sprawling, so this seems a better approach. I am looking forward to your gate! Thanks Kayne! I have a little secret - I don't have many bley blocks Thanks very much soccerkid, I am glad you liked the colours. I was really happy with those rounded fence gateways and the dark tan windows, thanks for noticing. Thanks HammerBro, I am glad you like it. Thanks LV! Time for some Western love in Historica. Kaliphlin has it all! His Grace the Duc LeStrange is on a sensitive diplomatic tour. Thanks Lord Duvors. Although I didn't use them, I just love those TLM Westworld cowboys, and that's what sparked it. Thanks Ska! The bricked in windows on the buildings are just internal window shutters for the siesta (too lazy to build interiors) although the gate is deliberately walled off following earlier troubles. I see this as the top of a big mule trek up the escarpment, there's no way a cart could make it, so the doors are fitted to let a laden camel through and not much more. We control this trade route after all! Thanks Carson, there's just no love out there for the friends horses but they do fit system scale and I think they look fine. Thanks Torgar! Sultan's Gate is pretty bustling due to the troubles in Nocturnus. Thanks very much kabel! Kaliphlin really gives a lot of chances to play around. I'm glad you like it. Thanks Mike! The queue outside the gates can be a bit of a bother, but it is a treacherous path and we wouldn't want anything as big as, say, an orcish battle wagon to get through again! Thanks qiadris, I'm glad you like it. Thanks Kai! Yes, it does look like a head with a big turban! Not deliberate, but I like it! Thanks de Gothia! I was quite pleased with those fences, I'm glad you liked it. Thanks MKJoshA. Many friends tigers had to be sacrificed for those pieces, but I knew that was what I wanted as the key motif for the whole thing. I still wonder if I should have gone for some decoration in the white blocks under the purple, but I was very strict with myself about it this time!

^Is there anything in Thorshaven worth trading? The PGTC had never found anything valuable there. We are surprised a boat bothered with the place. Probably one of those new Mitgardians, dressed up in clothes he can't afford bought with borrowed money, and playing the agent provocateur. -
Fabulous! Gothic is one of the biggest challenges for Lego, this looks great. So many really nice solutions. I love the use of droid arms, crossbows, the wheel. I can't quite work out what you have done over the lower left windows or with the white railing on top, but they look very creative too. What is the cross over the small door please? Lovely build!

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
robuko replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
His Grace the Duke LeStrange has discovered an unearthly ancient illustrated text that was found in a Nocturnus Sulphur Mine. It may explain some of the recent evil that has befallen your fair land. This invasion seems to be the culmination of an abominable plot. The text reads: "Ages ago, my children were forced to go across the vast seas surrounding Historica This was not an exile, or a simple stroll trough the greenly parks of Avalonia, as if there was ever a dangerous place filled with fierce creatures, it is uncharted land over the border of Historica Sea and sky was never meant to be a home for the Drow. Dark is the place we flourish in, and Underdark is the place we will claim as our own once again! With power and sheer will to survive the Dark Elves have become mighty, and now we are ready to return and help our sisters to level Historica once and for all As we swarm over your lands with fire and web, steel and lies, you will remember the power of the Drow! Drow rule supreme! The Drow have become mighty indeed! -
Book II Challenge 1B - Serpentine Hall of Nocturnus
robuko replied to robuko's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks Ska. I was having real problems with the doorway, it was the last thing to build, and then the idea of an organic doorway like a crab's mouth somehow seemed a really good defensive idea. No-one gets through that without the password! Topping off those domes is a bit of a challenge, I'm glad you liked my idea. Thanks Gunman, I 'm glad you like it. Thanks Silver.Smith! Thanks Simon. The whole build is small detail, really! The flying snakes are an Egyptian reference, it was the first thing I built and I liked it so much I had to buy another Chima set just for the wings. Thanks LV! The colours of red and sand green are inspired by the many temples that use them here in Hong Kong, and especially by the beautiful King Yin Lei. And gold because, well, you know, Kaliphlin vulgarity. And it's in the Nocturnus flag. Thanks Torgar. The texture is really complex, this might be the most technical build I have ever done. To get the plates to stand only 1 unit proud of the walls (which I really wanted) while having a polygonal structure needed a huge amount of behind-the facade SNOTwork. Droids are quite good for detail! Thanks Infernum. I'm glad you like it. I was quite happy with the way the dragon windows echo the curves of the flying snakes. I wanted to bring vertical and horizontal continuity of structure with the plates and gold lines, this thematic continuity was a happy accident. Thanks qiadris. My favourite is the patterning Thanks Wedge. All about local inspiration in this one. Thanks Gideon. You're right, the upper window is better, I ran out of pieces to duplicate it. That thing is held together with pure hope! Thanks mrcp6d, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks soccerkid, that is 100% of my sand green and 98% of my gold and red right there! I'm glad you like it. The tower is 10-sided, the angles are set by the cheese slopes between the hinges Thanks synbiote. Yeah, I decided to use more colour in the mix after seeing how great CBB's Kaliphlin scene was. Historic doesn't have to mean bley! Thanks Legonardo, I'm glad you like it. Crazy is where the good stuff is. I would be pretty terrified to have one of those tags! Thanks de Gothia, I'm really happy that you like it. Thanks NM, It feels like it was just a few days ago but then there have been about 1000 AoM posts since  . I'm really glad you like it, Please steal away, I'm flattered. I have had a go with a few East Asian builds in the Inside Kaliphlin series, with my lion dance in Qarkyr and dragon boat race scenes. I have been scattering them over the Eastern part of our great guild, I always thought they would just intermingle with the rest of the buildings. Thanks Matthew, I'm really happy you like it
