Who else wants the minifigures sets back?
naf replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Funny thing, when I was a kid I always thought those minifig packs were dumb. I much preferred to buy a full set, as back then they were pretty generous with the minifigs. Also, minifigs weren't as collectible then as they are now. I think the first time I asked for one of them was when Pirates first came out, I wanted more pirate figures to fill out the crew of the Black Seas Barracuda. Of course, now I wish I had bought more of them. I would love to fill out my classic space setup with more minifigs, and they're not exactly the cheapest things to buy on bricklink in good condition.- 13 replies

Awesome MOC. In case you couldn't guess from my avatar, I'm a big classic space fan. Your base has the look of a modern build while still keeping the aesthetics of the classic space era, excellent job. I'd love to do something similar to this. I was also thinking of MOCing my Futuron monorail into a classic space monorail to go around the base.

I would be happy with just a large exclusive set that's a throwback to the old classic space theme. A moon base with some sort of ship, maybe use the same color scheme (trans yellow/green, gray and blue bricks, etc) but with updated building techniques. Sets like the Medieval Market Village are non-combat oriented and sold very well.

I have to say that I've changed my opinion a bit on Galaxy Squad. I thought the human vs bug thing was a little cornie, and kind of overdone in the sci fi realm. However, I recently purchased and built the swarm interceptor and warp stinger with my stepson, and I have to say they look a lot better in person than I thought they did on the box. We had a blast building them, and there are regular human vs bug battles in our living room now. His creativity never ceases to amaze me... he came up with this elaborate story where the bugs are capturing humans in those purple pods, which turn the humans into bugs. I walked into the room and he had the bugoid heads on the human minifigs, they were his captured army of half human/half bug slaves If they do intend on making GS a 2 wave theme, I still hope the next space theme is non-conflict oriented. I think it would be cool if had humans working alongside other many other species of aliens and robots, exploring the stars, establishing remote planetary bases, etc.

I usually enjoy a beer or whiskey while building. The perks of being an AFOL... enjoying an adult beverage while playing with a kid's toy As for snacks, usually pretzels or anything else that doesn't make too much of a mess.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 11 Rumours & Discussion
naf replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Do you have any evidence to back up your claims? I know that when I was a kid in my Lego heyday, my brother and I were always excited to get a female figure in our sets. I thought the female pirate was the coolest figure on the Black Seas Barracuda. My brother collected a lot of town sets, and he liked having a good mix of male and female figures. It was less of a problem in the early 80's since the figures were practically gender neutral. Put the hair with pigtails on that figure and voila, female! Now that the printing is more detailed, and gender specific (the girls now have hips, cleavage, lipstick, etc), it's more apparent to the consumer that there are way less female figures in sets. Given the fact that Lego is slowly but surely increasing the female minifig population means that there is a demand for them from both boys (arguably their target audience) and girls. -

The review has the breakdown. Yes, unfortunately there are only 2 tiki's per box, which is why I was excited to find two in the random bags I pulled yesterday. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 11 Rumours & Discussion
naf replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
This series is really easy to feel. The islander has a big rubber mask, square present for the elf, big round tray for the waitress, etc. -
What originally brought me into my dark age: video games, girls, other teenage stuff - probably the same stuff that put most people into their dark age. It never occurred to me to keep an eye out on Lego, and I missed a lot of very cool sets between 1990 and 2012. Back then it was just a toy, albeit a very special toy. Now, Lego is a hobby, a trip down memory lane, something I can share with my kids, and a link between my kids childhood experiences and my own. I'm busier now than I have ever been before. I have 3 kids from newborn to 6 years old. A career, a house to take care of, plus my other hobbies. Even with all that going on, I got back into Lego full swing, put together all of my old sets, bought some new ones, and I'm having a blast. While I will probably go through periods where I'm not building much of anything, I will always have my eye on Lego, and I can't see myself going into a dark age again. Life is all about balance. You may be very busy with whatever is going on in your life, but it's important to sit down and do something that's enjoyable and creative once in a while. If you do decide to say goodbye to Lego, I would definitely pack up all of your sets and store them in a safe place. I think most people who have lost their old Lego regret not keeping it around. I'm so happy that my parents had the foresight to meticulously store all of my old Lego for me. They even kept all of the instructions and original boxes. I would be really upset right now if they had sold it all after I "grew out" of it.

This set kind of disappoints me. The jet looks great, but most of the cockpit and the entire tail section are big specialized pieces. I think it would be a much more impressive build if these things were brick built, which is completely doable. I feel the same way about the big wing piece and jet engines. Maybe Lego was trying to keep the build simple for small children? The conveyor car is very nice. Thanks for the review!

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 11 Rumours & Discussion
naf replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I went to my local TRU and they had 1 box of series 11 that was about half gone, I didn't have my hopes up as it looked picked through, but I bought the rest of the box so I could sort them out at home. I ended up getting 2 tiki warriors, 1 scientist, 1 rollerskate waitress, 2 constables, 1 gingerbread man, 2 barbarians, 1 yeti, 1 mountain climber, 2 female robots, and like 5 welders. I think it was a pretty good take seeing as it was just a blind buy. I'm going to return the extras except for the tiki's, as I want them for my pirate sets. I didn't have a problem with the tiki masks, they were both sitting straight when I put the figures together. -
Very nice, I like how last year's, and this year's holiday promotions fit in with the Winter Village theme. I do kind of wish they had done a different scene than the tree vendor since we already have one in one of the other WV sets, but oh well.

The post office can be had for $100 right now on bricklink, I just picked one up as I can only see it going up from there. I bought the cottage for a $30 discount earlier in the year, so I guess it's a wash in terms of cost. I wonder why they decided to not carry this set a third year like the rest of the line? Maybe they thought it would eat away at sales of the cottage and village market since those are both priced higher? I'm planning on running my old 7722 train (modified to be more Christmas-y), and really wanted the post office to pair with it, since it shares the same logo with the mail car on the train. I also like the accessories that come with it, the mail truck with snowshoes is awesome, and I really like the gazebo.

Unfortunately it looks like they aren't re-releasing the post office for some reason, it's listed as retired on the Lego website. I was hoping to be able to buy this without paying the stupid huge aftermarket markup... oh well.

I don't quite get why this is. I'm sure Lego did their research and found that conflict sells, but it seems like it eats into the design and creativity of the sets. Take Galaxy Squad, for example. They have to devote bricks and minifigs to include a small vehicle for the opposing faction in every set. These extra resources could have gone into making the main model that much better. Even town has gotten into this with their police chase type sets. I know Blacktron was technically the "bad" faction during the Classic Space/Futuron/Blacktron era, I never saw it as such until Space Police 1 hit and showed the Blacktron guys behind bars. I was actually surprised at how conflict oriented Lego is today after coming back into it.

Like the comment above said, retro is in. I think there are a lot of 30-somethings right now who are having children, and because of this are getting nostolgic for their old Lego sets. I know I'm definitely in this category. If Lego did a remake of classic space, or futuron (my vote, it was always my absolute favority space theme), I think it would do well. The key would be to keep the spirit of these classic sets to get the AFOLs to buy in, while keeping it fresh and new for the next generation of space fans.

If there's a new PotC movie coming out, then they might release a quick wave of Pirates to get people's interest up before the release of another PotC wave based on the new movie. I'm kind of hoping for this to be true. Either a pirate ship on par with the size and detail of the Imperial Flagship, or (even better) a pirate cove hideout set on par with the size of something like the Ewok Village. I like this idea since there are already several large pirate ships.

Are you a member of a LUG? No, but I've considered contacting them about joining. The local LUG seems pretty active. They recently had a huge city display put together at a local museum, and I noticed that they have a display setup at our local Lego store. Are you actively participating in your LUG? Time. I don't think I have the time to commit to a group right now. Would you consider supporting more actively the online AFOL community (e.g. Eurobricks) as moderator, regulator (indexing, ...), making set reviews, etc.? Not really. I love being a contributer and discussing Lego with this great community, but again I don't really have the time for any sort of responsibility.

Missing/damaged parts or minifigures in new sets
naf replied to Tariq j's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Perhaps they did seal them with some sort of glue, but it ended up coming apart at some point due to heat, rough handling during shipment, etc? You'd think they would put some sort of taped seal over the opened part like they do with the larger sets. -
Those are two wildly different sets. Since they are just coming out they'll be around for a while, so you have some time to decide. I think they both make great display pieces, although the Ewok Village will be easier to keep on a shelf since Orthanc is so tall. Personally, I'd get the Ewok Village, but I'm more of a Star Wars collector than LotR. I like the pieces better in the Ewok set too, lots of great tree and vegetation pieces if you want to MOC a forest scene, or a Forestman's hideout in the Castle theme. You really can't go wrong with either set though.

As a classic pirates fan, it would be cool to see a collectible minifigure interpretation of the bluecoat governor, the redcoat admiral. Not out of the realm of possibility since we got the pirate captain.

Review Review: 21103 Back To The Future Time Machine
naf replied to Rufus's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I managed to get one at the Lego store last night. Honestly, the pictures don't do the set justice. It looks great, and it's a fun little build. Does it look exactly like the BTTF DeLorean? Nope, but not much in Lego looks exactly like the real deal, especially when it's minifigure scale. It's close enough though, and the hood doesn't look too bad either. I kind of expect Lego to look blocky, so I don't mind the stepped hood as much as others do. The minifigures are awesome too.- 207 replies

Since TLG doesn't have the flap on the front like the old style boxes did, why don't they just shrink wrap everything to prevent tampering like this? -
What Collectible MiniFig Is Your Favorite Army Builder?
naf replied to Mr. Elijah Timms's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Not sure what constitutes an army builder, but I don't consider myself one. I missed most of the CMF series so far due to being in my dark age, but I'd consider buying at least 5 of each of the historical warrior type figures just so that I can mix and match the various outfits and accessories to create different characters for castle and pirate MOCs. For multipes, I have: 10 revolutionary soldiers 2 roman commanders 3 warrior women 2 tomahawk warriors 2 medusa's As an aside, today was the first day I actually went to a store to pick through packets. I was mainly looking for revolutionary soldiers, warrior women, and romans. These were pretty easy since the rifle, spear, and helmet are easy to pick out. I also figured hey, I could have a chance at finding Mr. Gold too. It was an eye opening experience. First, I wasn't the only adult picking through the CMF packets. And second, the store employees acted like this was a regular occurrence- 65 replies
