  1. Some more ideas that I've been thinking about. A few of these might be repeats from the merged thread, I haven't read through all of it. Also, some of these figures are already available in Lego sets (like the fireman), but this is not uncommon with collectible minifigures. The CMF series usually takes these figures and adds more detail and accessories, like the policeman or forestman, for instance. mythological/creatures: grim reaper/death father time zeus bigfoot + vote for forest spirit/dryad evil/dark fairy city/occupation: miner mail carrier fireman historical: arabian man/woman shephard with crook and sheep +1 vote for medieval minstrel, with a lute or harp +1 vote for a victorian character fantasy/scifi: steampunk guy/girl updated blacktron 1 figure (same as how series 1 spaceman is an updated classic space astronaut) updated space police 1 figure priestess (d&d style) classic princess (think disney princess) cyborg
  2. Just brainstorming some nice to have characters: wizard/sorceress king/queen (probably one each in different series) construction worker with hard hat +1 vote for ballerina +1 vote for school teacher hunter with rifle backpacker/camper/outdoorsman bride of frankenstein female vampire cyclist (not sure if a bike is too big of an accessory for this series) chef baker greek guy/girl in toga frat guy/sorority girl with greek letter jacket or sweater fencer javelin thrower
  3. My local Lego store was out of DeLoreans when I called them around noon today. I'm not sure if they released them before today, but they did say they were getting more in on Monday. They didn't know how many though. Anyone have luck finding one today? How many did they have on the shelf when you got there? I might just end up buying online and eating the shipping costs since I won't be able to get there until Monday evening, and they might be sold out again at that point.
  4. I'd love to see these, but the images aren't showing up.
  5. The distribution is a bunch of crap. I didn't realize that Lego was intentionally making certain figures rarer like this. All this will do is drive up prices for certain figures on the secondary market, because there will be people who will search out the rare figures just to flip them on bricklink for a profit. As for the figures, I already commented on them, but I just saw that the mech has the old school blacktron symbol on his armor... very cool! It would be nice if the other details on the figure's print and blaster were yellow instead of green, as that would match Blacktron 1 better. Right now it looks like a mash up of that and Blacktron 2.
  6. Thanks for the review. Wish the barbarian came with some different weapons, his swords look too civilized for him. I think a big axe would fit him better. Also a bit disappointed that the diner waitress has no back printing... she looks naked from the back!!! I think the tiki warrior and jazz musician are my favorites in this series. I also like the elf and gingerbread man; will be incorporating them into my growing winter village scene.
  7. I dislike promotions like "Mr. Gold" when it comes to collectibles. All it does is create a secondary market and allows people to take advantage of others who "have to have it." Also, since you can feel the packs, it really isn't that much of a mystery as to where Mr. Gold is. If you're persistent, you can find him and bag a quick $600+ on ebay. I'm trying to collect all of the minifigures, but I'm not going to be upset if I don't find a Mr. Gold. I consider him an "extra"; as long as I have the main 16 figures of each set I'm happy.
  8. So, looks like if I head over to the Lego store after work I'm probably not going to be getting one Aug 1st? Does anyone know if this is the only run of these, or will the stores replenish their stock? I've never bought a Cuusoo set before so I don't know how limited of an item they are.
  9. I've found that once a series is out, you can usually pick up a complete set on ebay for about $50 + shipping. That's just slightly more than buying at retail, and probably breaks even when you factor in tax, gas driving to stores, and your time. I did this with series 9, 10, and will do it for 11. I'm not much of an army builder, although I'm thinking about collecting a few more of the musketeers, revolutionary soldier, and space marines for various MOCs that are in my head. I enjoy the collecting aspect, and even though the figures might be horrible (female robot, I'm looking at you), I still want to get one to complete the collection. Who knows, what I might consider bad today could grow on me.
  10. I like this series quite a bit, as there are a lot of figures that can be added to the Winter Village sets; the elf, gingerbread man, grandma (and last series grandpa) will find a home in my village scene this year. The lady robot is my least favorite here, it's just a rehash of the clockwork robot. And those strategically placed meters on the robot's chest.... come on Lego, you're better than that The female scientist is one of my favorites. I love the beakers, one of my favorite minifig accessories. Can be used for scientists, or potions in a medieval setting.
  11. Luckily nothing thrown or given away. I was lucky enough to have parents who knew I'd want the bricks back someday, even after telling them I didn't want them anymore no 3 separate occasions during my dark age.
  12. That's the problem, I like them all Yes, I've searched bricklink. The $4 nurse doesn't have any accessories. I'll probably just end up getting the cheaper figures, and keep my eyes open for deals on the others. It just astounds me that the price has gone up that much on some of these. I figured Lego produced enough quantity of these figures to saturate the market some. But like you said if people are buying zombies by the dozens for a horde, that could do it.
  13. I got into the collectible minifigure scene kind of late in the game. I had been given a few during my dark ages; I completed my scuba certification two summers ago, so I got the series 1 scuba figure as a gift. Family thought it was cute since I had a ton of Lego as a kid, and it matched one of my current hobbies. I also acquired a few others in a similar fashion. I had no idea at the time that they were collectible.. Of course, being a completist, once I found out about their limited nature after my dark age I had to go and collect them all. One thing that really gets me is how much some of these figures are going for. I pretty much have the entire collection, with the major gaps being in the series 1 figures. Some of them in that series are going for $5 like the crash test dummy, but others like the zombie and nurse are being sold for $20-$30 each! Why is it that some figures from the same series are relatively cheap, while others are the same price as an entire Lego set? I can maybe understand the zombie if people are trying to create a horde, but why the nurse? Is she really that much in demand? It's frustrating since I'll probably never be able to collect the entire series 1 set. I'm just not willing to pay that much for a little piece of plastic. Does anyone have any tips on how to get these figures at a more reasonable price?
  14. I'm sure the Lego Historian can chime in and let you know exactly what you have. Looks like some Lego from the 50's or 60's to me. Great find, you have a true collector's item there.
  15. All of the bricks of the same color seemed to come from the same mold. For example, all of the yellow plates had hollow antistuds, the rest had solid.
  16. I don't mind exclusives as long as true fans get them, and keep them. Doing a simple search on ebay for "lego sdcc exclusive" pops up minifigures going for hundreds of dollars. Why people would support these scalpers is beyond me. People are also hawking the BTTF DeLorean as well, since they released it early at SDCC, and they actually have bids. Do people not realize it's coming out at Lego stores in a little over a week?
  17. I ended up just using the best looking bricks I could find, and stopped paying attention to the specific molds. My Black Seas Barracuda had never been taken apart since the first day I built it, it was even stored completely assembled so I knew it had all of it's original parts. I took it apart so that I could clean the bricks as they were really dusty and dirty. I noticed that some of the plates had solid anti-studs, some had hallow, and some other small differences in bricks, and this is all from the same set and era. I'm sure that when Lego decides to change a mold, they still use up their existing stock of parts, and sets can get a variety of molds making it next to impossible to tell exactly what type of part went in a specific set.
  18. My stepson and I finally finished the Imperial Flagship last night. It was super fun to build, the only parts that felt tedious were horizontal spars that hold the sails up. I kind of spoiled myself, I've had the set since the beginning of the year but didn't build it until now due to a lack of space. Of course, in the meantime I read reviews and stared at pictures of this beauty, so I felt like I already knew every nook and cranny before I started building. Even so, this ship is more beautiful in person than any picture can show. It looks great sitting next to my Black Seas Barracuda. The BSB holds up well next to it given the fact that she's 23 years older, that says a lot about the design of the BSB. My favorite parts are the galley and captains quarters. I love the little details, like the carrot being cut on the table, pots and pans hanging up on the wall, the spyglass looking out the window in the captains quarters, and of course his little bottle of the finest scotch on the desk. The brig where Brickbeard is kept is huge, takes up the entire front of the ship. It would have been nice if this was a crew quarters, with some bunks and a table instead. They should be keelhauling Brickbeard anyway, not handcuffing him Something to mod later. If I had to make a criticism, it would be with the material they made the sails out of. It feels more like a textured paper than cloth, I feel like the sails on the BSB are of a higher quality. I guess time will tell how the sails hold up, the 20+ year old sails on BSB still look new. As a side note, I did not experience any problems with the bow of the ship breaking. The SNOT areas seem to be fairly sturdy, and it hasn't fallen apart once with me moving the ship around, my 5 year old playing with it, etc. Granted, I wouldn't carry it around by the bow, but from the review I expected this part to be weaker than it actually turned out. YMMV.
  19. What's with the life preserver?
  20. I think this is an impressive set on it's own, but it's dwarfed by the other ships in the pirate series. Even the small Carribean Clipper is too big to dock, and the Black Seas Barracuda looks like a giant next to this. I wish they would have scaled this set bigger so that it worked better with the ships, but then the cost would have been at least twice as much.
  21. I personally think this set is great. After coming out of my dark ages, I jumped on the winter village series before the retired sets got too expensive in the after market. I think people have a problem with the price because sets that incorporate many smaller elements just don't look as impressive as a single big structure. I think this set captures the spirit of a winter market nicely, and the unique printed horses, mechanical functions, and 9 minifigures justify the price in my mind. I'm planning on taking elements from the other sets, like the igloo, tree lot, and giant christmas tree, and making an even larger winter market in the center of my village, with the larger buildings around it. I am disappointed with the lack of a light brick, however. I think they could have incorporated it into the carousel somehow to make it look lit up. Guess it's something to mod when I get it
  22. If it's a clean crack, you could probably put some super glue on the crack with a toothpick, smoosh the crack closed, and then wipe the glue off of the visible side of the baseplate. You can put some more glue along the crack on the non-visible side to give it strength. I haven't done this with baseplates, but I have with other models with a similar plastic.
  23. I have my collection listed under my signature. Anything recent (Kingdoms, Star Wars, ect) are post dark ages purchases. Eldorado Fortress is an exception, as I recently purchased that via ebay. It was a set I always wanted growing up but never got my hands on. I think 1994 was when my dark ages started, and I collected from roughly 1984 until then. I didn't realize how many sets I had until I catalogued them all recently. Lego was the only gift I asked for through the 80's, and that's pretty much all I got from my parents and relatives for birthdays and Christmas. My favorites are: 6931 FX Star Patroller -> My first Lego set of significant size, all I had until then were the small boxes, I guess you'd consider them impulse sets now. 6951 Robot Command Center -> I know everyone thinks this set is weird, but I loved it. It had so many great parts you could build anything space related with them. 6285 Black Seas Barracuda 6990 Monorail Transport System 7722 Steam Cargo Train Set
  24. Fair enough, although I think they still lay on the pink and purple a little thick. Pink campers, pink roofs, purple window awnings, etc. Like I said, I'm totally fine and encourage Lego to expand the color palette, and I think pink and purple bricks are great. Though Friends is more realisically colored than let's say Barbie, it's still strongly emphasizing the traditional girl colors. Why can't we get these colors incorporated into other themes? I think purple would look great in a space theme, for instance. There's a bit of purple in the Galaxy Squad theme, but it's pretty minimal.
  25. I think girls can get into Lego without it being all pink and sparkly. There are enough pink toys to go around, the girl's aisle in the toy store looks like a pink bomb exploded with glittery shrapnel. I like the idea of the friends line. I think girls like to play with toys that mimick real life. My stepdaughter likes to play with her baby dolls, change their diapers, feed them, etc. But she also plays dress up with doctor outfits, firefighter outfits, police, etc. She likes to mimick life, and that doens't necessarily mean "traditional" female roles. I actually bought her a "girl" duplo set for Christmas that lets you build cakes and pastries out of the pink, blue, and purple pieces. She doesn't touch it. My stepson actually plays with it more. It's great that Friend's have a cast of characters who all live in a cohesive community. The color palette needs work, however. Everything in this fictional town Friends takes place in is pink, pastel, purple, etc. I think if the sets had a more realistic color scheme, more gilrs and even boys would buy them. I also don't see the need for a new kind of figure. Most girls I know who play with Lego think the original minifigure is pretty cute on it's own. Friends should have stuck to that so it's more cohesive with the rest of the system sets. They also enjoyed playing with the old "town" Lego theme sets. These were simple houses, restaurants, shops, etc. Also, I'm not saying that pink and purple have no place in Lego, I appreciate the new colors and think they should be used more. But, in my opinion, it's a problem when the entire theme is set in those colors soley to appeal to girls. This thread reminds me of this ad. This is how Lego should be marketing towards girls. They've gone backwards IMHO.
