I'll never give up my Lego! Lego was basically the only toy I really played with growing up, and now that I'm an AFOL after a long dark age I can't see giving it up again. Putting those plastic bricks together instantly brings me back to the happy days of my childhood. It's so many things at the same time, no hobby I've ever had can come close to it. I can share it with my kids and family, and bond together while building. I can build to decompress after a long day at work. My kids share their creations with me, and I share mine with them. It's something that connects me to them. The only thing that could really get me out of Lego would be TLC itself. If the quality goes down significantly, produce mediocre sets, etc. Even if that happens (shudder ), it would just mean I would stop spending money on Lego; I'll still have all of my existing bricks to build with.

Helm's Deep Tower of Orthanc Ewok Village Battle of Endor I simply don't have the room to properly display these sets. I'm hoping to have a dedicated Lego room at some point, but that would require moving so it's in the distant future. Also, my young step kids will most definitely want to help build. Call me greedy, but these I bought for my leisurely building enjoyment. I love building with the kids, but it's mostly me watching and them building We build 99% of our sets together, I'm saving these for me on a rainy day.

Honestly, I think minifigs are perfect the way they are. They are supposed to be simple, with limited articulation. I thought I read somewhere that the reason the short legs don't move is because they look silly in a sitting position. The only thing I'd like to see is more leg, arm, and back printing, but in moderation. Minifigs are a "less is more" type of thing, and too much detail can ruin the figure. Need to leave some room for the imagination.

I get the feeling that Lego focused mainly on the figures for this Hobbit wave, and spent very little resources on set design. First, they focused 2 of the sets (half the wave, and the flagship set) on Dol Guldor, something that is barely covered in the book. Granted, these sets are based on the movie where the scene is more prominent, but I really feel that Lake Town should have been larger and made the flagship set. This, Dol Guldor Ambush, and Mirkwood Elf Army are just uninspired walls, not very creative at all. Will I buy them? Of course, because I need all things Lego LotR and Hobbit, but i'm still disappointed. I'm hoping they spent most of their design resources on a Lego exclusive Smaug set to be released at a later date.

We've run into this in my family. My kid's got me out of my dark age, but they're still a little too young to be trusted with my vintage Lego. We've bought them a few new sets to build with, and although they generally do a good job they are still prone to chewing on pieces or damaging bricks by using things other than brick separators to pull things apart (we've now gone through brick separator training with them ) Once they are older, I would feel fine with them playing with my collection, as long as they keep it separate from theirs (don't want to mix my 80's bricks with the newer stuff), and they can prove they won't destroy bricks.

Build! Honestly, this ship is one of the most fun building experiences I've had with any Lego set. Even if you decide to sell it years down the road, it will still sell at a high price being open and built. I agree. We'll most likely have another pirate ship at some point, but nothing quite like this one.

I swear this hole in the minifig head stud to prevent choking is one big Lego urban legend. I highly doubt this was the reason Lego did this. If that were the case, wouldn't they make the studs like this for all the bricks?

Kind of glad that this wave focuses and the prequels, as the I really only collect OT and the last couple waves cleaned me out! I will definitely picking up a few of the DS trooper packs, I don't have any imperial guards yet. I wonder if this means we'll be getting a way to get the emperor in the future that's cheaper than buying the Death Star. I have mixed feelings on the guard's new weapons. While they looke closer to what they weild in the movie, they look kind of goofy waving them around like a lightsaber. The black spear looks less movie accurate, but they look more guard-like.

I really wish I had been out of my dark ages when this set was available. I just can't bring myself to justify spending so much on a set though. I have to think that lego will eventually release another steam engine just as nice as the EN sometime in the future, as trains are big sellers for them. Since I don't plan on going back in the dark, I'll be able to snag that when it's available.

I don't mind this little curveball. It would be boring to have the exact same contest every year. And it feels a bit like cheating to start building something a year in advance hoping for a contest to come along. I think the smaller scale will be interesting, it takes a certain amount of creativity and unique part use to maximize the space.

[Ninjago] What are the best sets?
naf replied to Ragnar_Deerslayer's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I bought my step son the Ultra Sonic Raider and it really is a beautiful set. The vehicle looks impressive, and is 2 vehicles in one. The set also comes with all of the ninjas, plenty of weapons, and cool parts like the tank treads and the gigantic rubber wheels. It's not a "historical" set, but it's loads of fun to build and play with. Very good value if you can find it on sale. -
Horror Stories - Lego you bought off flea-bay and BL
naf replied to DrJB's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I should add that when I first got out of my dark ages, I ordered some sets used since they were long retired by then and buying new and sealed would be way out of my price range. Now that I've bought all the sets I wanted that were out during my dark age, I try to only buy new. People have varying opinions on what constitutes "good" "fair" "like new" conditions, and I don't really want to be surprised. For a little more money, I prefer the new parts whenever possible. The only time I buy used parts now is if I can't find them new, or if they're a rare part that would offer a significant savings buying used. -

I've had generally good experiences buying from both bricklink and ebay. I only buy from ebay sellers who have overwhelmingly positive feedback, and original pictures to listings. If a price is too good to be true on a new set it's probably a drop ship scam and I stay away. Bricklink sellers seem to be pretty professional for the most part. I've only had a few issues, and the seller responded quickly. I had one order with a few missing pieces, and they sent them at their own expense. I bought one set that was shipping in a ziplock in a bubble mailer. The pieces were all damp in the bag, I think they washed them before shipping and didn't dry them enough. That seller gave me some money off because of it. All in all, a positive experience so far. -
I like that set. I do think it's overpriced but I got it on sale. I'm just building up my Hoth collection now, so I didn't have a snowspeeder, snowtroopers, or tauntauns. Speaking of building up my Hoth collection, I just bricklinked 8129 AT-AT walker.

I would really like to see a largish Mos Eisley Cantina set, and perhapsa set featuring tusken raiders. Add in a new Bespin related set with Lando and Leia and I'll be a happy Lego SW collector. I feel like once the new movies start coming out, all the new sets are going to be episode VII related. ** edit ** Let me add another to the list: Yoda's hut. Skip the X-Wing, just a nice detailed hut with a Degobah Luke, R2, and OT Yoda with his walking stick.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures - The LEGO Movie Series Discussion
naf replied to Klaus-Dieter's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I don't understand the complaints with this series. Sure, it's a tie in to the Lego movie, but every single one of these figures looks like they could have appeared in any of the CMF lines. I think these figures look great. -
Wow, this is indeed impressive. I really enjoyed looking at the "in progress" pictures of this MOC. I'm just starting to MOC myself, and I like to see these advanced techniques. I really wish I had the time/space/money to build something on this scale. Hope to see some updated pics soon!

I don't think a washing machine is necessary, you take a risk at damaging or losing your Lego pieces. A soak in a mild detergent is all you need to clean them up.

I got the desert skiff a while ago on impulse. I was shopping for some items for the house, and of course took a quick peek at the Lego aisle. They had it marked down to $16.99 as an instant substitution for the Galaxy Squad Swarm Interceptor that they were out of. Because, they're totally similar Worked out for me though!

Finally pulled the trigger on 10236 Ewok Village. Used $40 worth of points I've been saving over the year, plus got my double points, plus sold the clone trooper lieutenant for $12 which brought the price down even more. That's about as good a discount as you're going to get with a Lego exclusive nowadays. Sadly, I won't be able to build it anytime soon since I don't have the space to properly display it. Just have to pick up Jabba's Sail Barge and I'm done with SW Lego for a while!

How Many Mirkwood Elf Army Sets Do You Plan on Buying?
naf replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I'll start with 1, might buy another if I can find a really good deal. I'm not much of an army builder, eurobricks standards anyway. I don't have the room for hundreds of figures, and I find that having too many in a MOC ends up being distracting. I did buy 3 uruk hai armies, since I thought the Helm's Deep set needed a few more uruk's, and I wanted to extend the wall.- 102 replies

I used the retr0brite formula about a year ago on my classic space and futuron sets after I rescued them. The blue, gray, and white pieces had started to yellow and discolor. After I used the method, they looked just like new, very bright with no yellow. I mixed the formula exactly as the instructions said, and had them under a UV lamp for 24 hours, stirring occasionally to make sure all surfaces were exposed to the light. A year later, they still look good with no sign of yellowing. YMMV but these are my results. I also use this cyber clean putty to clean built lego. They call it a putty, but it has the consistency of a gel. You can push it into small crevaces and it will pick up dirt and grime. It's meant for cleaning computers, but it works great for lego: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/326952/Cyber-Clean-Hi-Tech-Cleaning-Compound/?Channel=Google&mr:trackingCode=30ACC49F-6DF6-DE11-BAE3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA&mr:adType=pla&mr:ad=22395426956&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:filter=20224360076&cm_mmc=Mercent-_-Googlepla-_-Technology+Computer_Tablet_Accessories-_-326952

Some of my older Lego had a nice layer of dust and grime from sitting in my parent's basement for 20+ years. I simply put the bricks in a big plastic bin, added some dish soap and warm water, and let it sit for 4 hours, stirring the bricks every once in a while. Then I just rinsed using a colander - just be careful that you use one with small holes as pieces like round studs and technic pins tend to find their way through larger holes and then down the drain. Bricks came out looking very clean

Future of the CMF as licensed characters
naf replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I agree, no fleshies. If they do end up doing more licensed CMF lines, like super heroes, I'd prefer them in yellow. This way, they will go with the rest of the CMF lines when displayed. Plus, it will give people who prefer it a chance to have their favorite characters in a classic yellow minifig. -
Out of all the projects in the video, I liked the exo suit the most. It's an original (ie non-licensed) idea, and if done right can be a very original and unique model. I hope they include a classic spaceman with it, like the cuusoo project shows. It will have to be "fixed" since I see illegal connections in the model, but hopefully they keep the same heavily greebled look. I wouldn't mind a little splash of color in it too.
