Aesthetics and Technics
Meatman replied to Didumos69's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Interesting subject for this thread. One thing that I've noticed here is that different builders get criticized differently for the same thing. I am not even going to bring up names or models, but I do recall one guy getting criticized for "stacking beams" when he used like 3 beams on top of each other(I think for doors), but then other builders get heavy praised when their entire model is nothing but stacked beams to fill in gaps and create shapes. As far as popularity goes, from what I've noticed in my years on the internet, the people who seem to be most recognized are the one who are the most innovative. -

Wouldn't it make sense to allow your possible clients to take pictures to review? Or are they expected to make decisions on the spot? -

Agree. If anyone really wants pictures, they can take them. There are plenty of devices on the market small enough to record with that no one would ever know. -

It's funny how TLG is being all secretive about their product, yet they let hi-res pictures of sets for the new Han Solo movie get leaked out which showed some spoilers. -
Holes in Technic MOCs
Meatman replied to Alex Ilea's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Some builders prefer a more natural practical look like you would see from TLG while others enjoy filling their entire models in with parts. Nothing really wrong with either style. Admittedly I enjoy building other people's mocs that have a traditional style rather than one that have unorthodox techniques used. As far as "Perfect" goes, the Lox Lego models are gorgeous, but they do use some techniques that traditional style builders would probably never use. So it mainly comes down to preference in what you may or may not find appealing. -

I know people that buy sets just for the minifigures and then sell the rest of the set on Ebay. -

I was just going to comment on this. The ackermann is indeed reversed. Nice model otherwise. -

To me, the gearbox is the most important part of a car moc since it is the most complex part of a real car. There is nothing I enjoy more than seeing what kinds of new and interesting gearbox designs that people come up with. I think changing gears is more interesting that pressing down on a suspension. But of course, it's just my opinion. Having watched the video for this rally car, I find it even more underwhelming than I thought that it would be. It does have a lot of good parts though.

You're not. Those old panels make then entire model look a little rough.

[MOC] Ford GT + Instructions
Meatman replied to Fanylover's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looks great! Do you think it would be difficult to incorporate a mini engine into your model? Kind of like this little one that Paul has in his Balisong car? It would be a tad smaller since the older Ford GT has 8 cylinders and the new ones have 6. -
Why are halfpins used here?
Meatman replied to Silvio's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
When I built the crowkillers Scorpion, it used 1/2 pins in the end holes of 9L liftarms that operated the changeover catches. When I asked why he did that, he said it was just in case people didn't follow the instructions and used the last hole instead of the 8th hole and have to tear the model apart to fix it. -

If this is a generic model, then there is no original car to base it off of. Anything is better than nothing as long as it works properly. I could live with the the Porsche gearbox with all of it's flaws out of the box if Lego would have at least had it shift in the proper order and not make excuses as to why it does not. -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion
Meatman replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, if a real car has a 7 speed gearbox that shifts in order and Lego designs one based off of that real car that not only shifts out of order(1,3,2,4), but only has 4 speeds, then a generic model incorporating a 3 speed + reverse gearbox should be perfectly acceptable. -

This was mentioned earlier in this thread. Does anyone know if this is a realistic function, or just something that was added to make the opening rear less boring? -

Some of the 1st half sets are available in the US now at Toys R Us. I think they are available from Shop at Home tomorrow. -

I am not going to lie. I was discussing this model with Paul Boratko on Facebook and he told me about it. I didn't even know there was a rally car that had this type of engine placement. -

The Mack truck looks absolutely amazing. Granted it uses system bricks to achieve it's looks, but still, it looks great. And the Garbage Truck B-Model looks like it could be it own main A-Model. That rally car..... Well it's different I guess. I suppose when the rear hatch is lifted that sides in front of the rear wheels also open as a double action feature. I guess they wanted to add some excitement to the normally basic opening mechanism, even though it is kind of odd. Those curved 3 x 11 panels just don't do it for me though. I don't like wheel arches to be so square like that, it looks very odd from the side. That was one thing that drove me crazy about the 42039. I guess it is based off of the Lancia Rally 037 due to it's mid engine placement. -
[MOC] F14A Tomcat
Meatman replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It looks to be a nice model, but he'll never sell that many models in a year. And the only way he'll get any real selling exposure for them is possibly listing them on Ebay. He might get a bite on a couple of them, but I am skeptical. I've seen people trying to sell Sheepo's Mustang model for a few thousand dollars and they couldn't even get that. That model had a huge $ amount of parts in it. Advertising a high price model with no video isn't going to help either. He does have a fortune already invested in each model, but good luck trying to get that back out of them along with a profit. Well known builders don't get that kind of money in charity auctions for their work.
