  1. The Turkish Stars fly in NF-5 Freedom Fighters. As for a military theme: I think Lego doesn't have a very strict line. World war 1 planes with machine guns are no problem, as are German WW2 soldiers and Russian post-war soldiers. Those are from a licensed theme, but I don't think there is any difference. If Lego allows medieval themes (most medieval movies I've seen contain scenes not suitable for children's eyes), a movie franchise where a planet is blown up (and even release the weapon itself as a set) and a minifig with an alternate choking face, and another movie franchise with German WW2 soldiers and post-war Russian soldiers, but refuses to release modern military sets, I call that hypocritical. However, while I have the feeling that in the US people have respect for the military, in Europe, or at least the Netherlands it's a different story. Sometimes I see reactions online and while most of those people clearly never served in the military and thus don't know what they are talking about, it's clear to see there is a lot of opposition. If that's for the real military, I can understand why people don't like the idea of military Lego sets. However I don't understand why they don't like others to build military models. But hey, I've seen plenty of great military MOCs that are even better than anything Lego would release and a decade before I became a real soldier I was already playing, pretending to be one. Awesome Phantoms by the way!
  2. I still think this has to be the best Technic front loader released so far. Looking at video's and pictures of the overpriced Volvo even that set can't top this. The functions are great, and I think the size is perfect. I don't own one, unfortunately. I own a 8853 and was amazed by the looks and workings of my nephew's 8459. Funny how everyone calls 8459 little, while it was much larger than 8853, and the biggest Technic set I played with back in the day. Thanks for the review!
  3. As a sidenote, not all rolling stock is the same width. I've checked some Dutch prototypes, and in a scale of around 1:50 it would result in 7-wide locomotives and 6-wide freight cars. To connect bogies, you could use these. At http://railbricks.com/ there are some building instructions of 7 wide locomotives, maybe you'll find some useful tricks.

  5. Thank you guys.
  6. I agree, at first I thought this would be a display model, not able to negotiate curves. Very impressive! I really like TEE trains, in all shapes, and the looks are impressive as well. Well done!
  7. For the last months I was almost 2900 km away from my Lego bricks, so one of the things to do in my free time was making nonograms. One of the puzzles turned out to be a mosaic of John F. Kennedy and I decided to rebuild it in LEGO. Flickr
  8. I'm still sad the great Lego Ideas proposal of a Modular Western town got rejected. Only because Lego needed to get another License theme, with IMHO mediocre sets based on an aweful movie. Looking at the newer Pirates sets (2009-now) I'm afraid new Western sets will be nowhere near as good as the old ones. Maybe it's a feel of nostalgia, I have to think positive. With the terms of Ideas being changed, chances of a Modular Western town are little. I still think a series of a Modular Western buildings would be popular.

  10. It might be an idea to add liftarms to the tracks. Some other people did it with their snow vehicles to great effect.
  11. To be honest I can't find a reason to paint or dye parts. Looking at your pictures, except for the 1 x 1 round tile, I only see parts that are either available in green or are easily substituted by other green parts but with the same shape as an end result.
  12. I see some people being surprised 42009 is so popular. Remember this topic is not about which is the better set, 42009 or 8043. It's about which set brought you out of your Dark Age and apparently after the release of 42009 many people realized Lego is awesome. I wrote 8880 for me but I think 8275 can be a reason to get into Lego again as well. It only took some time for me to buy. Glad it was still available back then.
  13. 8880 ended my dark age in 2007. I've always wanted one as a kid. When looking for building instructions for my brother's Ninja set, I discovered the AFOL community, as well as an 8880 at Marktplaats, a sort of Dutch Ebay site.
  14. Really nice work so far. Great use of the Technic panels as smoke deflectors!
  15. I think the arms on which the blade is connected could use tiles, but I wouldn't change the blade itself. I think tiles there would alter the shape too much. And yeah, I agree with Jantjeuh and dougstar, studs are part of the charm of this set. In fact, this was one of the reasons for me to buy it. :D
  16. Maybe this can be a solution for you?
  17. I never had any Playmobil pirate sets, but played with the Playmobil pirate ship some of my friends had. I never had the feeling Playmobil is of low quality, in fact, it's likely if I get children in the future I buy Playmobil for them as well. Newer sets have more detailed figures and accessories, unfortunately it looks like the cannonballs* are being replaced with "shooting arrows". Older set designs are better than new ones IMHO. Like Playmobil, Lego made cool Pirates stuff as well. I noticed the cannons of 6271 (1992) work better than the ones on 6285 (1989). But overall, I think the design of modern Pirate sets are not even close to the older sets. They look unfinished. Nowhere a baseplate to spot and often pieces used that look out of place. The only exception is 10210, which is no longer available and very expensive (stupid me, why haven't I bought it when it was available). The skulls on the sails look how you would expect in a Duplo set. Though I have to admit: while the skulls in the older sets are more menacing, skulls in general are unrealistic). Too bad the wires of my BSB got messed up. *I never had any Playmobil cannons or real shooting equipment, but from what I remember the cannons were more realistic back in the day.
  18. Sometimes it confuses me as well - for example, a Space Shuttle set that's counted as Sci Fi. Anyway, nice article. I never liked the Lego Mania adverts, fortunately for me there are versions without it.
  19. There was a combined model instruction released in 1991, containing the sets 8024 (1989), and 8815 and 8820 (both 1991). In this topic there is more information, or go to brickfactory.info and search for 8024.

  21. Gif's of the official sets can be found here.
  22. Something I remember from designing a truck is the usage of this or this part. When you manage to place it with the studs facing forward it shouldn't be too hard to create an offset of a plate or a half plate. Edit: Erik Leppen beat me to it. Anyway I'm very curious what you come up with, since I've got sweet memories of this type of bus.
  23. Thanks Blakbird! It was worth the wait.
