Here is my RC Grinnall Scorpion III. It has direct drive from one buggy motor. I wanted to film outside and get up to full speed but this thing takes off by itself when the sun comes out. http://rebrickable.com/mocs/JamesJT/rc-grinnall-scorpion-iii

Cute, clever and blue. Great driving too. I guess it would just fall over if you made it any quicker. -

Great MOC, really well done. I can't see the mechanisms because everything is black.- 19 replies

I made the Lotus 7 http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=138614#entry2630908 I also made a RC "tracked racer" the week before. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=138171#entry2623699 -

If it is tracked, like a ripsaw, it will be "skid-steer" so won't need a servo. -

Sorry, I though 8145 should come with 4x 75535 silver exhaust tips but I just checked peeron and it has ribbed hose like the one on ebay. It probably is real and I have no way to tell if 8145 is real. -

I can't find any pictures on google of a "tracked racer", maybe its a ripsaw. Maybe the set is "track racer" instead. -

Thank you all for the comments. I had a blast building and testing this. After many attempts, this turned out to be the strongest version; RC Train motor coupling by James Tillson, on Flickr It has a 12L axel, 2 axel and 16L axel to couple all 4 outputs together but I needed the clever steering of Antos Fiesta to make it work without a diff. It is also an odd number of studs wide which is better for studless technic models. The Lotus only happened because I finished the Caterham and realized I hadn't used the 18944 panel. I could have got closer but I didn't want to add weight. Using the blue11954 curved panels as part of the chassis meant I could remove 6 beams but it also meant I couldn't have them taper in toward to nose. I would have liked to put the IR receiver a bit lower too.

I made a RC Caterham and a Lotus 7 version using 2 RC train motors. I borrowed a steering design by Anto (from his Ken Block Fiesta) that makes the car lift its inside rear wheel when cornering. It means the car can do without a differential and produce roll induced oversteer. The Lotus has narrower front and rear axels. Caterham.lxf

I first used your steering so I could do without a diff, it picks up the inside rear wheel when cornering so the diff wasn't needed. Now I find I can now get (roll induced) oversteer with the low torque RC train motor. Thank you again. RCT Car V7 by James Tillson, on Flickr -

I'm using your steering on one of My MOCs. It works really well. Cheers RCT car V7 (Anto steering) by James Tillson, on Flickr -
[MOC] RC Ripsaw aka "FastTrack"
JamesJT replied to JamesJT's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
LXF for bother versions are available. Send me a PM. Mini version works well with AAA and IR V1. This mod has more torque but the thermal protection cuts in too often. I need a BuWizz. FastTrack.lxf FastTrack Mini.lxf -

I could only find 2 RC MOCs with train motors when I started this project, maybe now there will be more. The carpet test was how I knew I'd built it strong enough. If you listen at 0:55 you can hear the thermal protection "squeek" as it spins on the carpet. Tarmac would destroy the treads. I went out and tried it on the grass; it was rubbish. It could just about go down hill but couldn't spin or go up hill. It would be great on ice! -

No ideas of its top speed as I don't have an area big enough to time it. I'm not sure what rpm the motors are doing. I tried gearing up but they have so little torque, they work best with direct drive. I'm pretty sure that 1 LiPo can't run all 4 motors at full speed at the same time. I really want to see what it can do with a BuWizz. Thank you. I made another 3 versions this morning that weren't as good but I put together all the best bits and it all just worked. I will make an LXF tomorrow. Yes, just enough fury. It is possible to drive this one and stay in camera shot. I had to add weight to the mini one to stop it flipping over. Now I want to try mini version on a ramp! A car is next but only if I can make it faster than the same model would be with 2x L-motor. -
I hope everybody has a go. This is fun! V3 and its back to 2 motors. I extended the wheel base from V1 but it was only 2 wheel drive and would not turn properly on carpet. FT 001 by James Tillson, on Flickr It went much better when I saw an easy way to make it 4wd again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDl7RROh8Ow I think I prefer V2 as it was easier to control.

I had to scrap the suspension for now as the tracks kept falling off. I tried all combinations and IR V2 with 2 motors per channel was by far the best. The thermal protection cuts in if I spin too long. It was no fun at all when I swapped the LiPo for AAA box. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFSxrScXnp4&feature=youtu.be It is slower but easier to drive, I have lost the "fury" so V3 will be back to just 2 motors (was it that obvious Max?). I think the key to making this work will be finding the perfect wheelbase, track and contact patch.
