  4. I understand what you mean, there are a lot of shortcuts to use, some better than others, to keep the part count down. I myself utilized a lot of them during the last competition here on the forum (TRIPLE). While some seriously compromise structural integrity, others are just workarounds that you would never see in an official set (for example, instead of connecting four engine cylinders in line with 10 friction pins, I instead used two 10L axles, thereby saving 8 parts. During that competition though, making it "something LEGO would sell" wasn't part of the description, and that you can see by just looking at a lot of the entries. If the goal of this competition is indeed to make something small that LEGO would sell, then it should be mandatory to show some sort of proof that it holds together, functions work as intended, etc.. Either in the form of a video, or an LDD file, where the MODs could dive into the model to check both part count, and how it's put together.

  10. It's going to be hard. I have never seen a forwarder with just four wheels, and to make one in scale of said wheels, would require a lot of parts.. That being said, I would love to see an official forwarder flagship!

  14. Apart from the [MINI] contest and finishing Madoca's Supercar GT/R/EVO/whatever, I have also made some progress on my large pneumatic arm. Note: This is going to be a prototype pneumatic demolition excavator, therefore the aesthetics have not played much of a role while designing this. It is more of a proof of concept, to get geometries, mechanics, weight impression, bracing, connections, and pneumatic tubing length, etc, right for the eventual Mk II version, which will hopefully look a lot better The boom geometry is loosely based on the Hitachi ZAXIS 1000K-3 (?) demolition excavator, with the short boom Click the pictures to see them in full resolution, or visit the bricksafe WIP folder I showed the pneumatic claw/shears earlier, but I have made a rotatable and tiltable shovel as well, as a drop in replacement, which utilizes the same pneumatic circuit and rotating axle/PTO as the shears. I also made a mechanical hammer, that is not finished yet. So no pictures of that I'm afraid. It uses only the axle rotation to drive the hammer. In the last picture you can barely see that I moved the worm drive from the arm, and onto the bucket assembly. This practically eliminates all deflection in the gears from manipulating the bucket (not the sideways tilting, but the main "digging" motion), and gives it less play. Before I did this, the bucket would rotate more than 45 degrees as it was being manipulated.. if that makes any sense Lastly, I have a picture of all the pneumatic tubing going down the innermost part of the boom: This shows the control tubes for all the functions except the main boom lift cylinders, which will join the others before going to the superstructure. The axle for the PTO is going through each joint of the arm via free-spinning 20 tooth single bevel gears. Now I just have to build a superstructure. The plan has never been to make this fully RC, as pneumatic + RC = crap, and concidering the weight of this, I want to have some finger tip accuracy when handling the valves. I will however have a compressor, as well as a motor for the axle of course. Each of these will be powered by their own dedicated battery box, to act as counterweights in the rear of the superstructure (I think it will be needed). Thoughts and suggestions for improvements are as always welcome Again; this is just a prototype/proof of concept, not meant to win any best-looking-excavator-of-the-year-awards

  16. Cheers! It's not only the part count that limits functions in these models, but the overall size as well, and the aesthetics! One has to find a nice balance, to make a good model in this competition I think.. I'm not sure the minor function of the tailgate mechanism is worth the extra bulk and how it ended up looking

Question: Are we allowed to use parts - and parts of certain colours - that aren't yet officially available, but that we know for a fact that will come later this year (probably before the end of this contest)? I'm thinking specifically about this part , but also, say Light bluish gray 5L thin liftarms/levers with axle holed ends (as seen in 42030) or red 3x11 flat panels (as seen in the 42029), or the new 3x11 curved panels in black and green engine cylinders (also seen in 42030).
  18. Well, you know I couldn't just leave it at that, I had to try something eventually .. It's not a chain, but it does the job It is very simple, and only added one piece to the total, as I now have two axles running through the tailgate, instead of lots of pins and 3L pins.
