Your Best Technic Bargains
Gnac replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Amazon.co.uk is getting rid of 42042 Crawler crane for £70 if any of you folk don't have it already and want it for that price maybe -
It's moved to the "Activity" tab in the header menu under "My Activity Streams". Content I Posted In - Eurobricks Forums EDIT: It's missing stuff from before the upgrade, but I assume it'll fill out when the scripting tasks Boney mentioned earlier are complete.

Some functionality will take some getting used to, but it's pretty good to have it. My only concern was upon discovering that the link to my "posted in topics" thingy no longer worked, but I see that it's now been incorporated into some nice new customisable widget. About 15 years ago I used to run a forum-based website on my own, and I dreaded each major version update of the board software because I had no idea if I'd be able to carry over my themes and code customisations without breaking something or starting from scratch. That was only a small forum, so I can understand what a mighty task it is for a busy 10+year old forum with what appears to be several million posts. Aaah, it's great to just see the place back after only a day.

Eh, I like the old colour schemes. I imagine the Historical Themes forum is missing them the most. Save us, Hinckley!

Important Announcement: Forum Software Upgrade
Gnac replied to Jim's topic in Forum Information and Help
Will the post timestamp issue be fixed? *runs away* -
It's juuust missing 3 colours: 329 - White Glow 330 - Olive Green 336 - Silver Ink Silver Ink doesn't show a material name in LDD, but the name has been confirmed elsewhere and the colour renders properly (unlike 132, 299, 301 and 306). I made an expanded palette ages ago with placeholders for colour codes up to 384, for the sole purpose of spotting new additions. (336 isn't on this preview image, but trust me it's in LDD)

The method I use relies on having a keyboard with a numpad and a mouse touchpad (otherwise you'll need a steady hand to click the mouse button without moving the cursor): Select all bricks in the scene, then click and drag them a bit to "lift" them off the grid and follow the mouse cursor once you let go of the mouse button. At this point you can position the camera directly overhead the model and line it up with the edges of the screen if you want. The "5" key on the keyboard numpad usually centres the view on a model, but when none of the bricks are actually on the grid, it behaves differently - restoring the 3/4 view instead. Once that's done, care is needed to click the mouse and "drop" the bricks back onto the grid without moving them somewhere you don't want (mousepads, yay). Finally press numpad 5 again to re-centre the view as usual.

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Gnac replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Both of those are still on my "want to buy" backlog - it looks like they just went up a few slots. I remember asking in one of the suggestion threads a while back about the possibility of a new ship model, so this research vessel is definitely going on the wantlist. -

At this point I really don't mind if it's either one*, as long as TLG commit to giving us a decent selection of bits in whatever colour*. I love all blues like a wizened guitar strummer, and the devil in me will take any potential bits I can get in that range. * SUPER-EDIT: Clarification on "either one" and "whatever colour". ALSO: I'm glad I didn't have to become a cannibal to uphold my shoddy principles -

Sounds panelicious. Make them the right sort of panels so as to save me blowing 500 quid on a 41999, and the designer will be MAH NEW HERO. -
Looks like a standard technic halfbeam curve.

It might depend on where you live, but for me the turnaround for B&P is usually at least two weeks. S@H stuff ordered at the same time arrives within a week.

Technic General Discussion
Gnac replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The Volvo contains a more varied selection of PF parts compared to the 8043; it's actually a pretty good way to get a taste of everything. 8043 contains: 4x M motors 2x IR receivers 2x IR controllers 1x AA batterybox 42030 contains: 1x M motor 1x L motor 1x XL motor 1x Servo motor 2x IR receivers 2x IR controllers 1x AA batterybox -
Eh, I managed to get some of the nice new parts from the 42056 Porsche just recently, and that's a set that hasn't been out for very long. There's no obvious schedule for things to become available.

Another one to answer the general query (though probably not helpful for the specific application), is to take advantage of the different orientations of the smooth and ribbed 2M axle joiners, along with a shifter ring:
-
If you don't mind the axles being three studs apart, two of these might work: As long as they're braced well, they should hold the 45° offset without too much slack. I sometimes use these when I need to actually undo a non-orthogonal gear arrangement.
-
Why EDIT: to clarify, this just seems like Skype for gaming, no? I'm not sure how the staff of a LEGO community would feel about promotion for another community.

42054 - Claas Xerion 5000 Trac VC
Gnac replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
GNAC HAS ARRIVED! These can be slotted in where they need to be after removing the existing axles / joiners / gears because I had to change the angle. Also: the ram doesn't rotate with the rest of the actuator now for some reason. I didn't edit the <RigidSystem> data, so that's probably why. Let me know if these need to be a different length, and I'll have a proper look at them. EDIT: balls, didn't see the edit. -
Tire and Rim Compability
Gnac replied to jgw's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Here we have one of my favourite wheezes for making Model Team tyres work with cross-axles: using black 2994 or 55982 rims and their compatible tyres, we can get a double-width thing that allows us to use whatever colour choice of wedge-belt wheels to cap the hubs. (LDD shot instead of photo because I currently have all my MT tyres packed away) -
Racers was already doing name brands such as Ferrari and Lamborghini, using many different building styles including minifig playsets, brick-built scale models, and even Technic-based builds. Some sets had Pull-back motors or slammers, there were various racetrack and road layouts (particularly for Tiny Turbos) and there was also the super-desirable RC gear. Some of these things are now offered in part through Creator Expert and Technic (Pull-backs, Ultimate), but Speed Champions isn't really filling the rest of the void - not that it ever promised to - but cripes I'd really like to see Tiny Turbos and the super-exaggerated Technic "Nitro series" type builds make a comeback in some form.
