  1. Wow! Great alternate build. This reminds me of trying to build the alternate models pictured on the back of the boxes back in the late 70s and early 80s.
  2. That looks just like the toy that I had in 1984!
  3. I will be purchasing the Swamp Police sets. Those are very nice and would go well with some of the MOCs that I have planned.
  4. Very nice modern styled house. I also think the shoveled path to the front door would be nice.
  5. The details along the bottom of the passenger car are very nice. Nice work.
  6. Great Video! And your MOC is my favorite snow remover.
  7. Awesome! Nice details and great job bringing back the nostalgia of the older set!
  8. That is an amazing version of the Crocodile. The articulation is well thought out and transmission mechanism looks fabulous. Great Work!
  9. Depending upon the setup, I would use a light sensor to track position along a track (like a loop) but I might go with a touch sensor if I were using a back and forth shuttle type train on a track that does not loop. I need to give the ultrasound sensor some thought to see if it would work in place of the touch sensor.
  10. Very nice build. The clear pieces for the dome and the lights really set off the MOC.
  11. That would be the most simple form of the concept. But I was thinking like the transport and setup of a Soyuz rocket. As in this video clip. http://www.criticalpast.com/video/65675051246_Soviet-Soyuz-spacecraft_space-walk_launching-a-spacecraft_launch-vehicle So it will be the integration of a train into the Lego Space 483 (Alpha 1 Rocket Base) to carry the rocket to the launch pad.
  12. Well that solution is a lot easier than the method that I have been thinking of using which is a Mindstorm Brick with position sensors to send a signal via an IR transmitter to control the train.
  13. I like the Conrail mods on the 60052 locomotive. (I used to live by the Port Richmond Conrail yards in Philly 5 years ago and wished I had a some pictures of the remaining rolling stock.) I have not decided what I am going to do with my 60052 locomotive just yet. I am thinking at the very least I am going to build the train a new frame in the style that I am using in my own MOCs which will make it easier for me extend the length of the train. Also, it will be running two live PF bogies instead of just one. Also, I would like to build an extra locomotive to have the going "butt-butt" on the tracks like they run in the coalfields of southern WV and Eastern KY. Hmmm..... I have some ideas now, but it looks like they may not have the 60052 as fodder for the design. I hate it when that happens.
  14. This house was a great build and this is one of the few sets that is still built and has not been recycled back into my collection of parts. I will have to admit that the only reason that I pulled the trigger and bought this set was I got it at $50.00 US which I thought was much more reasonable for collection of parts. Now that I see the abundance of tan window frames that I need more than I would like to admit, it might be time to recycle this set into my parts collection. Very good review.
  15. The majority of train builders that I work with in Pennsylvania, USA are PF builders which is why I made the leap into that direction. It was not until I was working a layout a few weeks ago built with 9V track that I learned how nice it is. And the 9V motors do not have the circuitry in them that times out the train when they get hot like the PF motor.
  16. You could make that into a freight car like those pulled by Amtrak. http://www.hebners.net/amtrak/amtMHC/amt71011.jpg
  17. Cale, your knowledge of Pennsy RR history amazes me.
  18. If I had started building Lego trains about 6 years ago, there is no way on this earth that I would ever consider the engineering nightmare of shoving all that monstrously huge PF gear into a train for it to simply run around a track. I still think that Lego made a blunder when they dropped the 9 volt system. It is a shame that I waited too long before getting into trains.
  19. Really great work on the MOC. I love the 7 wide frame on this model and the boiler really came out very well. And I really like Dr. Spock's ball joint idea to make my overall steam locomotive more flexible for moving around turns. Now that I have converted the 4-4-0 style Ghost Train MOC into a 4-6-0, I am looking for a way to modify the articulated joint on the front of my train in a way to reduce the bulk mess of the joint that I currently have.
  20. I set up my Horizon Express to run two PF train motors from within the front locomotive and both motors are tied to the blue side of the PF receiver. I don't have to worry about the front of the train getting ahead of the back or messing around with two battery boxes. Your goal is to add power to the train to pull more cars, but you do not want to add too much additional weight (like a second receiver or battery box) to the mix. Plus you will get to use those mad Lego modification skills to build a better design than what came in the set. Next thing you know, you will be building something like a 4-4-0 American or some other model of locomotive from your own imagination instead of from a set. That is when you realize you have been bitten by the train bug. My biggest warning is the trains become very fast when running two PF train motors in a single unit so be careful of having the locomotive override the tracks in turns. I have felt more like I was controlling a slot car with some of my setups rather then running a model train. In fact, this is why my latest build has been converted from using PF Train Motors to M Motors because they are slower and require less attention from me to run on a layout.
  21. I was hoping for Dr. Who for NYCC, but the chatter on the webs indicates this will not be happening. Best bet, NYCC will be Bionicle.
  22. What is sad is that minifig that I use for my representation on a layout is holding a coffee cup because I always have a cup of coffee with me. Depending on the Lego fan event, it may be a cold coffee beverage that I am drinking so that the aroma will not be as offensive to some of my fellow AFOLs who do not like coffee. One place where I have seen a huge absence of coffee machines are the Friends sets. That is sad because cute little girls need to be addicted to this wonderful warm beverage that is the giver of ideas and powers modern western society. Even Clara is now a coffee drinker on Season 8 of Doctor Who.
  23. Well now we have to see a Lego recreation of a CSX locomotive pulling the Tropicana Train Narrowly missing an Amtrak passenger train at The Diamond in Plant City, FL. I guess we can skip the second near miss at the end of the video.
  24. Nah, I wish it were. The nickname "cgarison" came about at a friend's house during an Eagle's football game in 2004 when one of the attendees was so drunk that she couldn't get out any of her statement except a point in my direction and a "see.. gar... hic... uh... son..." Being relatively new to Philly, the nickname stuck and everyone at that party started calling me C. Garison instead of Gary. So that became my new web handle because you really cannot give yourself your own nickname. But, back to the topic.... I might have to build a railcar like this for the moonbase.
  25. I am thinking this is the Reagan era Amtrak car so we could truly scare the Soviets. Nice build. And here is a link to the artist's conception of a train car launch. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-otRPQ8-Ogdk/UbwPj0bMOaI/AAAAAAAADJc/BMWOxgpCA0c/s1600/Rail+Garrison_launch+Poster.jpg
