  1. I'm really neither here nor there on the issue... it doesn't matter too much to me if I'm building something that doesn't end up being canon or not. I doubt it would. For the last book I know Z said free-builds earned very little points - say 10 a build (of course I don't know and it could be different now), still that means 10 so-so builds would probably add up to at least 20 points - perhaps even 30-45 - whereas two really good ones probably would only make it to, say, 16.
  2. At least we know who's door to lay all the Kaliphlin pirates to. Hmm... that gives me a really good idea... And of course, go ahead and hunt down more Mitgardian commissioned 'Kaliphlin' pirates.
  3. Z broke down a good tower technique here. Farther down in the thread are a few variations.
  4. Never fear, we Kaliphlins know that not all Mitgardians are riotous troublemakers! Those that bring their goods to trade and behave themselves are more than welcome! Poor, poor Mitgardians. They can't see how easy it is for a pirate to get ahold of a few official looking suits? Just wait until you see what your men do as soon as they get beyond your sight! As for the Arandela Negra, we can certainly do without her. We applaud the Mitgardians who have put down another pirate pretending to sail under the Kaliphlin colors!
  5. I would say that the voting could be for the 'real' North Gate, but other built gates could well be considered other gates of the city. After all it doesn't really matter to much IMHO if only one build is picked as real & all the others are just faulty artist's renditions; they've still been built and earn free-build points, etc.
  6. Thanks all! Okay, you guys have me! Well, I like flat roofed buildings. They're easy! And I wasn't sure how much rain they get in Varlyrio. From what I can tell most houses in Venice (that's my typical Varlyrian inspiration) had low or perhaps flat roofs. I know that Rodes (which wasn't so far away from Venice) had a lot of flat roofed houses back in the middle ages. Well, you're always free to build in it! Thanks! I was dying to use my new round trans-light blue pieces!
  7. Thanks everyone! Yes, I noticed that. I meditated putting black pieces or something behind it but was too lazy didn't feel like it. A higher angle would probably have worked well though. Thanks! Thanks MS! I usually think of Varlyrio (did I spell that wrong? and I even made a point of checking it! ) as clean tiled streets, nice and smooth. I guess some Kaliphlin cities look like that too though.
  8. This section is awesome! For some reason I really love that vine crawling up the walls. As always your wall texture is gorgeous! +1 for all credits.
  9. I'd like credit on my Valaryian Trade build for Anthropology, life in Valyrio + city scene, Hydrology, still water, Architecture, advanced windows and window frames. (4 credits) I'm also missing one vote on my Rounding up the Herd.
  10. It's been a while since I've done a build in Valyrian style, and this seemed to offer a good opportunity. A sea captain stands off-shore (not literally, his ship does) while picking up some provisions. He's come in on his shallop himself to make sure everything is top quality! Credit to Legonardo for the shutter technique. It worked really nicely here. I'd like to claim PU DoH Credit for the following: life in Valyrio (Anthropology) city scene (Anthropology) still water (Hydrology) advanced windows and window frames (Architecture) (4 credits) Comments are welcome!
  11. Clearly, Kaliphlin outweighs all others. That being said, Avalonia's not a bad pick, neither is Mitgardia. It's true that each guild does major in a specific kind of climate, but it's by no means hard and fast - there are snowy mountains, deserts, forests, and even swamps in most of the guilds (particularly in Kaliphlin). As far as the mini-challenges, most guilds have those every once in a while. Kaliphlin has two going on right now, the Sultan's gate challenge and the Petraea University Doctorate of Historica Program (which however is open to all guild members).
  12. Much better angles!
  13. Excellent work, the colors and all the details are great! The shaping above the entrance is really good too - as I mentioned on Flickr, the way the curves look like a Sultan's hat & hair is awesome!
  14. Great job! The rolling logs is a really good idea! Very smooth landscaping too!
  15. We're liberal and can afford to spare some.
  16. Great job Kayne! I like the smoothness of the wall, just the right amount of texture! +1 for both credits. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the orange-ish profile bricks, but they worked fairly well here!
  17. So that's what 'chevaux de frise' means! I've always wondered. Would it translate 'barriers of spikes', more or less? Edit. Think I've heard it in connection with the battle of Crecy. It probably referred to the hedge of spiked poles the archers drove into the ground, though I didn't get it until now.
  18. If my second one counts than that probably should, but if the first one does then I don't think that one needs to (it is a bit small, and so was my second).
  19. I don't even have to build, just look through my content. How's this? Return to the East (actually I'm amazed I forgot that the first time!) There's also this one. It might be a little small.
  20. Ahem. The Black Carrier A lousy build I'll admit, but doesn't it qualify?
  21. He took a page out of my book there! But I'm sticking with Kaliphlin!
  22. Yep, it's way easier! I agree that it sure doesn't make sense when you're staring at the code though! I guess I didn't make what I meant by private clear - I don't mean either the picture or the set. Once you go to your settings, you hit Privacy and Permissions (http://www.flickr.com/account/privacy/ - that may not work), my guess is it's the "Allow others to share your stuff" that's off (or says no). I just checked your picture myself & can't grab the BBCode. Garmadon could probably have done it the 'long way' like you've been doing, but my guess is he didn't know about it. And just in case you were wondering, you can delete the last line of the BBCode (W_pinewood forester 1 by Yooha9, on Flickr) if you feel so inclined. By the way, to all other GoHer's w/Flickr that haven't checked this part of their settings, it might be a good idea to go ahead and make sure that's a yes. That will also allow you to grab the code without signing in (I think Ska was having trouble with that).
  23. The BBCode is the easiest (though not the only) way to get a picture off Flickr & post it here. My guess is you have that set on private (unintentionally, probably - I think it's the default though I'm not sure), so if you go to your settings you can probably change that for the future. Garmadon can probably just copy and paste your picture now though. Edit: I guess I didn't do much explaining of what/where the code is; if you click on the little box with an arrow to the right of a picture, you have the option to choose either the HTML or BBCode (EB takes BBCode), but if you have you stream set to a non-sharing mode (though the picture isn't private), it won't allow anyone besides yourself to get either code.
  24. Sorry! Somehow I thought there were only three... +1 for the fourth one two!
