@Flavius Gratian: Since you are the first one to complete a vessel for this, you have your pick which squadron you would like the HMS Wentham to join. And give me a PM (or use the general COR pm) to let me know what sort of orders you would like for the next MRCA. Fletcher will surely have something for you. ;)

The Riverside Palace in Londa, Mardier
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Leadership has reached a decision: Art & Culture vs. Residential This category includes governmental and administrative buildings, which can include a royal palace, a parliament hall, or similar, if its main purpose is governmental or administrative. The residential category offers a cheaper alternative for buildings with the main purpose being residential. Building in NPC countries and ownership Everyone can build in NPC nations if they wish, unless something explicitly prohibits it (Eg. a war or similar) and such builds can be licensed. Be aware that leadership may decide that the NPC nation will confiscate the building if you do something against that faction, or take some other action allowed within the rules. Just like a player faction may do. We would all love to see the NPC nations developed further. EGS/Lore There is nothing specifically in the rules explicitly requiring the EGS to be rooted in the lore. However, leadership agrees that the spirit of the game warrants that there should be a connection. While a random cobbler in some settlement can be considered a periphery character of the player, explaining ownership, a large an important build (IC wise) like this must have a reasonable justification of ownership anchored in lore. And of course, Oleon cannot "own" the royal palace in Londa without justification. Ruling Oleon can license this build as a royal art and culture *if* the story is adjusted to properly justify both type and ownership. We are not asking for a long essay, but the story for the build must somehow explain both. @Kolonialbeamter will make the proper adjustments. If this leads to complaints or questions, ask them in the general thread or contact me or your local leader. This thread is for the build and its story. Thank you.- 26 replies

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Sounds cool, Drunknok - my suggestion is always to build what you feel like, and see how it fits within the classes, rather than set the class in stone and then aim for that. I find that more inspiring. And Corrington will certainly be thankful. -

Depends on a lot of things, but I have a twodecker sotl under construction at about 90 studs at the waterline and 22 studs wide that I was imagining as a class 8. But its always hard to say until you see the finished product :) However, 6 or 7 sounds reasonable for now, I would say. -
[AMRCA - Sir Stig] Old Aquaintances
Bregir replied to Sir Stig's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Sir Stig: Victor was dizzy. It had been a strange experience, the hypnosis, and it would need time to sink in. In a while, he might make better sense of the dreamy scenes, but for now, he was simply confused. As he exited the clairvoyant's house, the old man was suddenly there again, sending Servadoc a curious glance. "A fascinating experience, I am sure?.." The old man said, without pausing to wait for a reply. "But we cannot dilly-dally. The WGO waits for no man." "But what would you have me do?" Servadoc asked, still confused. Had there been something in those cookies? "I am to observe your behaviour for the WGO. You must prove your worth, and I shall be the judge." He pressed on, not acknowledging Victor's temporary incapacity. It seems the WGO did not take kindly to weakness. "I shall stay in the shadows, follow your every action, and you must not acknowledge me, or mention me. I will follow you secretly, but you must handle everything on your own!" He added with great conviction. The dreams where mind shattering, but at the moment more pressing matters were at hand, it seemed. You have been given a number of tasks. Which one will you do first? Participate in the initiation of a new member. Is there some rite of passage, a special ceremony or similar? Carry messages for the local organisation. Who do they communicate with and through what means? What is in the messages? Are they encoded in some way? Go on a covert mission to deal with the enemies of the order. Do they use force, subterfuge, politics or manipulation to overcome adversity? There is still no indication of whether the WGO will reward you for this. There might even be times you could think it best to just turn around and give it all up. There are no rights and wrongs here, this is a journey to yourself. Do you have what it takes?- 20 replies

[AMRCA - MAESTRO] Trador Agency of Exploring & Culture
Bregir replied to Maxim I's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Maxim I: MAESTRO: The strange ship swiftly closed the distance, proving to be both more well-armed and well-manned than the Arkady. However, nothing pointed to these people being pirates. They were obviously helpful, calling out in a language unlike anything anyone from the crew had ever heard before, rushing to repair the damages of the Arkady. Finding the Eslandian crew unable to understand them, they quickly became somewhat reserved and Emanuel soon found himself and his crew placed under lock and key on the strange vessel, which upon closer inspection still did not look like anything the young explorer had seen before. Both it and its crew looked like a modern version of something from Halos centuries ago, but having evolved somewhat differently. Much of the technology was similar, but everything just seemed a little bit... different. It was comfortable captivity, though, as the foreigners ensured them space, light, and exercise, and took the repaired Arkady in tow. Most of the crew stayed reserved, but were clearly as curious as the Eslandians. The only notable exceptions were the captain, who clearly did not care much for his guests, and the 1st mate, who brought them their food several times a day, each time taking his time to try to communicate. Everything pointed to this being a long voyage, but hopefully, it would be a pleasant one... But how would Emanuel and his crew pass time? Captivity is unacceptable! We must try to regain control of the Arkady.... Try to escape your captors and retake the Arkady. This will be risky... What an odd looking vessel - familiar in many ways, yet so different.... Build a mini/micro version of the vessel, representing the model Emanuel and his crew creates to pass time and document the differences. We must figure out where we are going... Our captors seem firm on keeping our location and course secret... Try to steal access to maps and/or navigational tools to determine you location and course. And hope you are not discovered... A friend in need is a friend indeed... Make an extra effort to make friends with the first mate and try to communicate. It seems that other means than language will be necessary... Note: A minimum of one build is required for the adventure to proceed, but more is encouraged. As always, your choices will have consequences, good and bad.- 18 replies

Mesabi, rather than building another entry, how about reworking this one now you have the time? The general idea is good, but it could really use some more work. Cranes, a warehouse, loading ramps, or whatever. Remember that royal properties have to pass court review in terms of both quality, quantity and sufficient effort. And generally, I wouldn't count a large "unbuilt" area as part of the stud count, as the water in this build.

[Ol-FB] Microbuild - Peppercorn mill at Astrapi
Bregir replied to Bodi's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Clever alternative use of bricks allround, Bodi! The gateway, the plants, the wheel, and the mill itself are all very well executed. My only suggestion is that you could have added tiles underneath the roof of the mill to avoid that unsightly gap, and perhaps tiles in the gate out front. Cool micro! -

Leadership is looking into this. Unless groundbreaking new arguments are available, I ask you all to discuss the build rather than the egs-meta.- 26 replies

The Riverside Palace in Londa, Mardier
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I don't disagree that a residence should be licensed as a residence, but I maintain that a governmental/administrative building should be classified as cultural. So no, not all palaces are anything. A property's class should be defined by its primary purpose. Whether this or any other specific property should be/have been classed as this or that, is a separate discussion. I don't think this specific build is clearly one or the other, although I tend to agree the current description mainly emphasizes residence. On another note, perhaps Royal Residences should have additional *IP income to reflect the prestige of owning a palace?- 26 replies

The Riverside Palace in Londa, Mardier
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Kai, I get your point, but it has been established before that administrative buildings fall into the culture category - so I am not talking about the cultural importance or it being turned into a museum, but about its administrative purpose. Could be a town hall, for instance. Or a seat of parliament. "Palace" in itself does not signify a residence. Some palaces are more administrative than residential. That is why I say it can fit in both, depending on the story/lore and purpose of the building. Of course, if it is mainly a seat of residence, it is (surprise!) a residence, but if it is a seat of government it fits better into the culture category. As such, a residence is a rather narrow category, but it has that nice prestiguous touch, and a much cheaper price.- 26 replies

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
You'll get the full review - take what you please and ignore the rest And for the record, she is a very impressive vessel! Really like her. While I think it could have worked with the cabin and upper decks, I agree the current version is more accurate. The upper spar for you gaff sail (fore-and-aft sail) on your main mast (being a brig, the 1st mast is the fore and the 2nd the main, being taller) is called (surprisingly ) the gaff, while the lower one is the boom. If I were you, I would lower the boom to be just above head height for a minifig. Right now, it is carried very high. (Also, a jib is a headsail ) And your masts should be divided in lower mast, topmast, and topgallant, similarly to what I showed you with the bowsprit. And for topmast and topgallantmast, I would suggest lighter spars. As to your hull, the lower stern seems a bit too square to me. Some inverted slopes might do the job, and I don't know if it is possible with the structure of the build, but it would make her look more harmonic. (Check this link to see what I mean) Looks like a tidy version of my worktable, so you won't have any smoke from me! @Mesabi: Those colours work surprisingly well - For this one, I'd like to see some progression from you - perhaps a more realistic curve, lower decks, and/or a more elaborate rigging? Looking forward to seeing where it goes in any case! -
The Riverside Palace in Londa, Mardier
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Would it? Who would lend them money? Instead, they have defacto sold a perpetuity to Oleon for getting the palace up and running. (If KB adapts the story, that is). During/after a war, many countries would take out expensive debts. I agree that not everything should be shoehorned into the bonus categories, but a Royal Palace in the capital would very likely be an administrative center, although the story could be more clear on this. And I think the rules are fair on this - a royal residence is for prestige (although I believe it still has a massive effect on settlement size and TV?) and is cheap with low income, while a Royal Culture is expensive and brings in more cash. I can't recall your palace story, but yes, I think it could probably have been a culture too. Perhaps what we really need is some more incentive to license residences? (Either boost price and income, or make them more important for settlement level) I actually think it would be more than cool... I am personally of the opinion that it should be a requirement that the EGS actions are explained to ensure coherence.- 26 replies

The Riverside Palace in Londa, Mardier
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Absolutely FANTABULOUS, KB. I really like the grandeur of the whole thing, and it really acts the part - keeps up symmetry with some local differences. If anything, I would have liked to see a bit more variation to showcase that it has been built over several phases. Can you show a breakdown of how you did the round main tower? I can't seem to figure that out, but it looks great. The inclusion of gardens, colonnade, dock, bell tower and main plaza tiling really makes it stand out to me. The whole scale is hard to fathom, but it surely is huge! ______________________________________ And now to the penible question of licensing brought up by @Maxim I: Type of property A palace is a funny thing - is it a residence or an administrative center? In the latter case, it could definitely be art and culture. The important thing is that it fits the lore of the build, at least to me. In this case, I think it can be both, so KB's choice is as good as anyone's, I think. Ownership vs. Lore I tend to agree with Maxim here. Why would Oleon pay for and benefit by a palace in Londa? It seems rather odd, and just seems off. And it does seem a bit like gaming the system, when the EGS does not fit the lore (although, as I try to explain just below, I don't actually think it is!). On the other hand, I don't want to discourage these kind of builds - it is great to see NPC nations developed, and KB could just as well have placed this in Granoleon and Oleon licensing it would not be strange at all. But right now, the story is just off - it makes no sense. And I think this needs to be corrected, as the EGS should be a servant of the lore, not just a way to make money. How can this be fixed? Possible solution The story highlights the oddity in how the Royal Coffers has been able to support this palace. What if Oleon lent Mardier the sum to refurnish/repair/whatever the palace after the civil war (the license expense) in return for continuous payments of interest (property income)? Then it all makes sense. Does this make any difference for the game as such? No, not at all. But it EXPLAINS why Oleon pays for the licensing, and why Oleon gets the income. And with this sort of internalising the EGS into the lore, I believe both me and Maxim will be happy. Or what do you say, @Maxim I?- 26 replies

[AMCRA - Puvel] Exploring Fiorentia (The Island of Flowers)
Bregir replied to Puvel's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I had clear suspicions that putting you on the Fiorentia would yield some absolutely fabulous builds, Puvel, and you never fail to disappoint! The bright colours and simple structures are fantastic, and you have a way of making even the simplest little things look great! Keep up the good work - can't wait to see where this leads! Noted... -
Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Spud The Viking: I think both could work, really. Not actually sure what I prefer, but the two masted version will be most realistic in scale. (And you do save time on the number of sails you will have to do... ) For aesthetics, I tend to prefer three-masters, though, as looking more balanced. In short, I am a bit torn between the two. A few other suggestions. Your jibboom (the thin part of the bowsprit) should be attached differently. Instead of protruding from the center of the bowsprit, it should have an overlap with the bowsprit, just like topmasts have an overlap with the lower masts. See here. Further, seeing her from the side shows a very vertical stern. Rounding her somewhat and giving the stern an angle would make her look more realistic and harmonic. Otherwise, she is looking fabulous! @Drunknok: I'd go for a sloop rig of some sort, although that might beyond your scope for rigging. A bowsprit would definitely be fitting anyways, and I am wondering what sort of sail plan you are actually planning? Could look like a single square sail. I'll agree with Bodi that you could use some hinges to make her stern and bow follow the shape of the hull more, as currently, they are a bit square. Love the little lanterns, btw, and the red railings. -
Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Hmm, my immediate thinking is that it will be more harmonic as a brig, but it is a bit hard to fathom currently, so I might well be wrong! :) If you are to add another deck, I wouldn't add a full deck, but just a quarter deck and a forecastle, with some gangways between them. (Leaving the waist/middle open) The quarterdeck would typically go from the stern to the mizzen mast (or main for a brig, although quarterdecked brigs were rare). I would make sure to keep the gundeck low (no higher than on the last pictures), and the same for the sides for quarterdeck and forecastle, to avoid the vessel turning out too tall. Could you perhaps take two pictures from the side? One where you have placed two tall mast-placeholders, and another where you have placed three. That would make it easier to see what would be the most fitting. Currently, I think she might be too short for a three-master. -
Cool sailors and nice build, Silentwolf. Much appreciated by the rest of the ETTC!

Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Elostirion: We have been discussing something similar in leadership, and I think we generally agree. However, we have a few other things we need to fix up for the MRCA first, so have a little patience. Feel free to discuss here - the input will be valuable. I am thinking something like X dbs * shiplevels visiting could be a good idea. Alternatively, if we can manage it, some feedback to the profit for properties in the settlement based on the amount of trade could be really cool, but that will be a lot more complex to do. -
Great micro fort! I really like those guns - what part is used inside the round 1x1s? As someone else said, the gate is really well done too. All in all, looks very substantial and powerful.
