Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Aha! Mesabi, the god of mischief is returning! Happy to hear - as LM71 said, no major events have really shaken up the Brick Seas, although there are some things going on on Terraversa. Hope to see you back - cheers! -
She is a lovely ship indeed, but I'll go for 1. That's most inline with the spirit of Lego, and we get to see a new ship from your hands! ;)

There are some interesting theories here. They are by no means academic sources, but interesting for further investigation: https://www.thevintagenews.com/2016/11/27/skull-and-crossbones-the-history-of-the-jolly-roger-flag/ https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,,-1173,00.html Old Roger, a term for the devil, it seems, is another possible origin. The "Joli Rogue" seems only to be retrospectively suggested, as not being mentioned in sources from the time. At least as far as I can see. Can you perhaps quote them?
-
Indeed. I know how it works. I would never use it for a university paper (just like I wouldn't use pictures from some book posted on the interwebs ;)), but it is making a lot of knowledge easily accessible for everyone, and I find that it is generally of high quality. In my experience, erroneous information is rare and quickly corrected. On most articles, you will find a multitude of citations to support their claims. But that is a personal opinion, and you are welcome to form your own. I'd love to hear your considered position on some of the opposing statements, preferably with other arguments than calling people lazy, discarding their sources, or putting them in category with people who believe the earth is flat. Remember that in communication on the Internet, it is important to be polite and constructive, as one can quickly come across as an entitled, arrogant asshat; and that conflicts can quickly escalate, as all the nonverbal communication is lost :)

Interesting discussion. The Wikipedia article definitely questions this statement, though. "It is sometimes claimed that the term derives from "Joli Rouge" ("Pretty Red") in reference to a red flag used by French privateers. This hypothesis is considered a false etymology, as the phrase "Joli Rouge" in reference to a pirate flag does not appear in any historical sources.[6]" 6"Jolly Roger, n.". OED Online. Oxford University Press. June 2016. Well, as far as I can tell, French privateers were credited with using red flags, but most of the examples shown in this thread are obviously black, so I am not sure I accept the statements above. It would seem that at least a lot of them were black. Interesting - I have seen some variation on this, although not the distinction between black and red. Can you remember where you saw this? There is nothing wrong with Wikipedia - but as with any other source, you need to approach it critically and check its source material. No, of course you cannot use it for academic papers, but your pictures of what mostly looks like pages from a children's book doesn't exactly fill me with confidence in its legitimacy either. :P

Previously: Trouble in Eltina It had been a perilous journey back west to his homeland in Pan, and all along the way someone had been trying to sabotage his progress. Unfortunately, the assassins had been unable to offer any clarification, even at swordpoint, but Al'Sayeed had pressed on. After the attempt on Eltina, several privateers had been stalking his vessel, although all attempts had been avoided. During his quick stopover in Kings Port, he had found something most disconcerting - someone had set out a significant prize on his head, which would explain the risks taken by assassins and privateers attempting at his life. Since then, he had taken great care to travel in the proverbial shadows, and had finally made it safely to Pan, there to seek out old "friends" to gain clues to his predicament. Little was known about Al'Sayeed's past and origins, but it was clearly fraught with the shadier sides of Panian society, and his contacts were many. By now, his investigations were starting to bear fruit. Personal diary, 29th of August, 619AE Eureka! Perhaps such a word is too optimistic for my situation, but I have now discovered my enemy - my stepbrother! As my father remarried, I was graced with the pleasure of a new fraternal acquaintance. I never took much note of it at the time, as he was but a large boy, but these last 20 years he seems to have put to good use! He has usurped the "organisation" for his own means, discarding generations of strict adherence to the codex, and expanded into ventures unthinkable in my fathers time. I see now that the faults I saw in Muhktaar as a boy, his arrogance and egoism, in full measure, and must react. I hope that I still have friends within, and shall make my way to the port. Rumour has it three vessels of the organisation are currently moored there, and their captains imprisoned for refusing his nefarious schemes. I shall test their loyalty, and perhaps... Perhaps we can deal a blow Muhktaar will rue to his end..." ___________________________________--- Another modest installment in Al'Sayeed's storyline. Since I have three arabic style vessels nearing completion (and have had for a long time...), I thought I would try to build a little story for Al'Sayeed (and how they will come about to be in Corlander hands), who has always been a bit of an enigma for me. C&C welcome, as always.

[LOGO Contest] Design the official BoBS Logo!

It needs to be original work, which is a fine line to thread. But using something found online as part or inspiration will probably be OK. -
[LOGO Contest] Design the official BoBS Logo!
Bregir replied to Roadmonkeytj's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Please look at the two categories, rather than focus on the "logo" word. We will look at adjusting the text, but focus on the categories. They should be clear :) -
Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Hello everyone! Take a look at the contest to create a banner/logo to represent BoBS - I am really looking forward to what will come of this! -
I like this little ship and her lines are definitely reminiscent of the one in the picture (Columbus' Santa Maria?). As Darnok said, it also has the style of an official set, while still being clearly your own design. In BoBs, we have many different styles, and you will often be able to recognise the builder of a ship just by seeing the pictures! Everyone has their own style, and every style its own merits. So far, I quite like yours, and will be looking forward to seeing the adventures of the HMS Annettania! Fair winds!

Thanks, Fraunces! It was a pain to build such a large structure with this technique, as progress is very slow, but I think it was worth it in the end! ;) I always like when people do full lego shots, where the background isn't visible, but you only see the built up moc, so I tried my hand here. And the pictures from a minifigs perspective makes them look quite cool, I think! It was also fun playing around with focus, although the background may have turned out a bit too blurry!

Like many others have said before me, this is an excellent series of builds, and each and every one of them is so full of atmosphere they remind me of paintings. Your minifigs posing is excellent, and the overall compositions of the builds are just marvelous. The dossiers are super well done, too, and I really like what you are depicting, which is a very interesting part of napoleonic era history! -
Clay Carling's Adventures in Jameston

I raise my cup and bid you a swift recovery! I am very much looking forward to seeing it! I really enjoy builds inspired by the trading post (tried my own hand at one with the my Cutlass Cay hideout). In passing I may say that you should not feel disinclined to use old bricks. My own collection is a strange mix of my childhood bricks, new sets, and BrickLinked parts. Many people here enjoy the classic look of classic bricks, and I personally find that discolouration of some bricks makes for nice texture! (totally not just looking for an excuse to use my discoloured bricks! ;)) -
Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Either I simply put bricks under the mast placement, or I leave a 4x4 (square) hole and let them run all the way down. But the 4x4 round with the round hole could give a good look! As for mast placement, I can only advice taking a look at some pictures of the type of vessel you are building :) -
Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Looks great, both! While I can't talk for Ymir, I typically but in an axle in my masts, for strength. The issue with not putting in axles, is that once you put on tension on the rig, if you hit the mast, you risk it very easily collapsing. (Trust me, I have been there... ) You could also use technic connectors - makes for much thinner masts, but works well for a vessel that size. I typically anchor them low in the hull - As I like to have some serious tension on the masts, it is important that they can take lateral tension, so they can't be sitting on a thin deck. -
Having moored safely in the harbour of Kings Port, it was time for the mission to make its official appearance. Just like when the Olean and Eslandian missions had arrived, there was talk in town of what this meant - many Terraversians were slightly suspicious, but also felt pride that their small nation was granted the attention of the major powers in Terra Nova. Outside the City Hall of Kings Port, where the audience would be held, our heroes made their final preparations. "So, mr. Barlow, we shall meet Archduke Oldis and present to him our proposition. I shall let you handle negotiations here in King's Port, as shortly, Cooke and myself will take leave for Westface" Montoya said calmly. "Please recount our proposal to me." "Our main purpose is as follows: We officially recognise Terraversa as an independent nation and wishes to establish a permanent diplomatic presence here This presence includes our military attachés, who will assist in training and educating Terraversan forces Major Vernon and his aides will assist the army Commander Morris and his retinue will join you for Westface and the Terraversan navy We are most interested in some form of trade agreement, and further willing to discuss terms for some form of mutual defensive pact" Barlow pondered for a second, and then continued: "You and Cooke will go to Westface and recount the same offer to Admiral L'Olius. And of course, our gifts! The Amiable yacht for the Archduke and the Concord schooner for the admiral." "Very good, mr. Barlow. And any information you can get about the Olean and Eslandian involvement will be of particular interest. But nothing underhanded, mind you!" Montoya insisted. "i have every confidence in your abilities here. Also..." Montoya hesitated a moment, lowering his voice. "Remember, we must avoid committing to Oldis or any other individual, until we understand the political landscape here better. There seems to be some internal power struggles still settling..." Somewhere in the back alleys, a hooded man bearing an uncanny resemblance to Sir Andrew Drake, the intelligence officer attached to the mission, was discreetly seeking information about Olean and Eslandian involvement on Terraversa, and about the power struggle between Oldis and L'Olius, putting up a considerable sum [250 dbs] and spreading the word that useful information would be rewarded. __________________________________________________ And here the whole build:

Secret Letter to the Admirality
Bregir replied to DonRamon1981's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
To Lieutenant Clay Carling, HMS Annettania Your report is most concerning, as currently, Corrington has no admirals, nor fleets of any size, operating in your waters. As a matter of fact, I am myself the only active admiral in Terra Nova. It is my considered opinion that you have found yourself duped by an imposter, either a national fleet with an interest in these individuals, or a pirate squadron. I can only advice that you attend to your private signals and keep your vessel in safe distance from any unidentified forces of superior force unable to answer them to satisfaction. However, your mishap has at least ridden us of the potentially troublesome diplomatic issue of how to handle these foreign individuals. For the now, you are hereby required to proceed to Mesabi Landing, there to compile a report on the status of the settlement, which was hit by a natural disaster earlier this year. This report is to be handed in at the office of the colonial governor of the Paradise Isles in Jameston. Rear-admiral Fletcher Commander-in-Chief, Terra Novan Fleet ______________ OOC: Nice build and story, but it is really so that we have no other admirals, nor no significant fleets prying these waters. An important tip for RP'ing is that you can only affect the world with your own characters, so playing in important events (such as the appearance of a fleet) is something that one should leave to game-masters. Otherwise, you end up forcing your stories on others. That being said, you have basically complete freedom as to what you want your own character to do, and that may affect the world around you. (And may have consequences, negative or positive ) I know in the beginning this can be hard to navigate, but you will quickly pick it up. Interaction is key! The trip to Mesabi Landing and reading up on recent events there is probably a good place to start - you may also coordinate some activity with @Darnok , who plays Mordo, the current mayor of the settlement. Cheers! -

Can you hold on to it for a while, as there is shortly something else coming up, as well as the upcoming "official" challenge too. We will keep you first in line ;) -
For the record, he can start licensing things immediately. As soon as the account is created, they will automatically be connected to it.

Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
To Lieutenant Carling of the HMS Annettanian, You are hereby required and directed to make your way to the nearest senior officer and report for duty, there to join in local efforts against piracy, or whatever duties your seniors may require. Good save the Queen Rear-admiral Fletcher, RN Commander-in-Chief, Terra Novan fleet OOC: Nice introduction and welcome amongst our ranks! I didn't want to dictate where in Terra Nova your adventures should start, so you are free to decide yourself. Also, you should post the ship (a class 3, I would say) in a separate topic, if you want to use it for the ship action (MRCA). Additionally, @Darnok has volunteered as a mentor to help you get started, as we know the rules can be a bit hard to get into, and I expect he will contact you soon and help you with your first ship license and builds in this world. -

That would probably be a class 3 vessel, the perfect command for an aspiring Lieutenant, or young commander! You can find examples of ships build for BoBS here: Ship index. It is not up to date with all ships, but there is loads of interesting examples for inspiration. For tips, work in progress feedback, and general questions or inspiration, when building ships, you can also look into our shipwrights guild hall. To officially join the game, you have to make a small introduction of your character. (This guide may be helpful) If you need any feedback on that, you can always ask here or in the general thread. Cheers! EDIT: I should add that you get a free license for a class 2 ship when signing up, so a small trader or warship may be a good place to start. Otherwise, funding for a class three can probably be secured too, for instance through the Bank of Corrington Pioneer Loan Scheme found here. -

Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Greetings, sir! You can build any kind of ship - however, for RP'ing reasons, our rules state that you can "promote" yourself as high as Commander, which means anything less than a frigate, in terms of command. For higher ranks, the admiralty handles promotions on the basis of merit. In BobS, that translates to something like a class 5 ship (see more here), which includes ships of considerable size. (3 to 4 midsections of the large hull pieces) What sort of ship size are you imagining? My personal recommendation is to start a lowly lieutenant, to play your advancement up the ranks. In any case, welcome in our little pond here! -
[MOC] HMS Effortless 118-gun first rate ship of the line like victory
Bregir replied to Buccaneero's topic in Pirate MOCs
Generally, on a full rigger, the main mast should be aprroximately as tall as the hull (ex bowsprit) is long. It seems to me that your ship generally have good proportions. A ship like this would often be able to carry royals above the topgallants (from below, the sails are named courses, topsails, topgallants, and royals (and above, I believe some carried "skysails")). So imagine in quiet weather, she may carry a smaller sail above, which would probably make her look very tall. So I think the proportions are fairly good :)- 38 replies
