The Empire of Eslandola: Sign-up and Discussion
Bregir replied to kabel's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I think you must settle for the honour of inventing this fine policy, and then ensure your incentives(not just monetary, obviously) are sufficient (compared to others) to attract builders.- 780 replies

I am already now expecting some vessels to be condemned as prizes, and will keep a lookout for any auctions to this effect. Damn, all those dubloons burn in my pockets! Well, as it is a captured ship, it is already licensed. But are you sure it was captured by Maestro ships? I am willing to offer more than 20-25 % (and in cash ). I say this mainly to ensure that the Eslandolian crown should not risk making any rash decisions, but my interest is real! Of course, the price depends on whether the ship is already moc'ed...

I probably will, but with my vast wealth, it will only require a small portion of my fortune! I think you might have a conflict of interest here, Garm!

I thought I had made a pretty good point for how a ship could have attributes smaller than what appears, due to damages, lost/removed cannons, hull space taken up by other stuff. But the license represents the cost of building/buying a vessel. When I buy a vessel, lets call her "The Gold-Laying Hen", that ship has to be represented by a moc. I can underlicense her, for the reasons stated above, and repair, upgrade, refit her for the cost of a bigger license. That makes sense in the IC world. However, if I have captured a 3A, it works just like having bought a 3A (Assuming it is not already a moc'ed (player) vessel). You cannot utilize that license before you have represented it in a build. In my book, that is the end of it. And the Corlander run was a very risky one, through many zones. Together with the mysterious loss of a lot of first borne sons in Bellson recently, and the strange lights in the sky, that should perfectly explain our great profits, with out the need for Well, you can never overlicense a moc, but the point was to use a 3A license (example) as a 2A, if you only had a 2A moc. And then later, when you have a more fitting moc, move the license over to another ship. But that ruins IC continuity, as licenses aren't number plates, but represents building or purchasing a vessel. (Plus, imagine what pains it would cause the poor guys trying to maintain a ship index! ) And I completely agree with you - this is first and foremost a building community, with the augmentation of the EGS. Therefore, the IC logics of the building community should always take precedence over the cold, economical logics of the EGS.

I would consider this. You are welcome to send a pm to discuss this. Everyone can, but no one else has one yet (afaik). I would suggest only including trade companies that already have monopolies currently, and then add more, if they obtain a monopoly.

Merchant's Colonial Trading Company - General Discussion
Bregir replied to Kai NRG's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I half expect Maestro and Coyle shipping co to buy shares in this through devious schemes of strawmen and holding companies! :D :P Might one suggest a thorough background check of your investors?!? ;) Does look like a very nice idea with the insurance, although I would suggest turning to an independent insurance company for spreading the risk further. (My little birds tell me that there is something underway...) I am going to steal some inspiration from your prospect! -
I'd say "go" - it can't do any harm. Later today, I expect to make an accounting sheet available to my fellow corries. When a few of them have tested it, I expect to make it generally available. And I don't even expect anything in return! (Ok, a small token of appreciation, a small monetary gift, a title, a royal medal, or a government position wouldn't be too mightily opposed... *wink wink* :P ) (That last part was a joke)

First: Yay, I am still rich! Then me not being the sharpest tool in the shed is of little consequence. ;) Second: On introduction and dbs. Joining up by posting your sigfig gives you 25 dbs for starting cash, one free class 0, 1, or 2 vessel license, and a free small property license. *If* you choose to introduce yourself with a build (which is exceeding the formal requirements) you can be awarded for that freebuild by registering it and get 10 dbs. Third: On price zes (captures) Yes, you need to moc that vessel to be able to use, unless it is already moc'ed. (which would be the case for a vessel capture from another player.) The exception to this is the 5 free class 5 warships each faction can have without mocs. (Not applicable for single players, obviously.) While you can under-license a moc (the vessel may be damaged, sparsely crewed or have some cannon removed), I do not hink you should be able to undermoc a license. At least not then to later upgrade. This makes it too hard to follow, but more importantly, it breaks immersion, if a different moc is suddenly the same license. It simply couldn't be done in real life, so we shouldn't do it here. In short, I am rich, b*****es ( ;) ), introduction with a build can yield 35, and you need a moc to use a license. Yours truly Don Isaac "Rockefeller" Montoya ;)

I would suggest everyone keep their own accounts and give Ska a little leeway - as stated elsewhere, there was a few errors in the calculations, which will be amended when the poor soul has a chance !! ;) Otherwise, Ska et al is going to be burned out by the end of this weekend!

Seconded. Let us know if there is anyway we can help. I am currently contemplating a MRCA spreadsheet, but as I understand, cb4 and ska was already working on something, so I will await more on that for now.- 897 replies

As said earlier, we would all rather have you took your time. This is supposed to be a hobby, afterall! (Although a very exciting one!) And I am happy to hear it came out rather balanced, although that one trade company is in for a bad surprise - I guess everyone is on the edge of their seats!- 897 replies

Noticing Captain Dee's comments on not approving bulds of ones own faction, might I put forward a suggestion? Since it will make it easier for all to manage, should we not relax the rule about approving same faction builds? I understand why it is done, to avoid conflicts of interest. But on the other hand, we are all gentlemen/ladies here, and I really doubt it will be a problem. Thoughts?

[COR - MRCA Result - Jan] That is no Oleander Vessel!
Bregir replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice story and great way to present the MRCA result. I think the small boat is really nice, and the Oleander-ruse is Ãs so typical - and a very good way to look harmless, eh? The rigging is of a somewhat interesting design, and for future smallcraft, I would suggest sticking to sloop, cutter or lateen rig, but this works fine too. -

Nice story and build, BrickWolf. I am really enjoying your vignettes and the stories they tell! It shows how much you can do in a small scale. Hmm, a dead Mardier Soldier washing up on a beach - does this have anything to do with the rumours of Island 2 being infested by some rare disease? And if I remember rightly, there was also an abondoned Mardier fort there?

Dee Shipyards of the Empire of Corrington
Bregir replied to Captain Dee's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Great to see more pics, Captain! (And glad you cut I down again - I too was overwhelmed :P) As others have said, it's a brilliant build with a lot of things going on all over, and an endless number of details to take in! I am going to go over it a few more times, to see what I can "steal" :P However, the pictures are generally grainy, and it looks like too high ISO setting. I quite agree: Tripod, low ISO and ling exposure works for me in almost any light :) I don't have a remote release, but use a two second delay to avoid shaking the camera with my fumbly fingers! -

You do raise a good point here. However, I shall await the latest MRCA results before I settle on that explanation ;) With two ship potentially sunk, and two more shares in the same position, I am not yet sitting comfortably in my chair! ;)

Dear god, KB - how on earth can you pump out so many beautiful vessels in such a short time! It is very impressive! I definitely approve of this one, and if you are not totally happy with it, I am. She is a beautiful example of the trading vessels that plied the seas when the age of sail was at its highest. And the way you integrated that cabin into the hull, and that beautiful colourscheme is just wonderful. My only gripe is the same as Ska's - I think you placed the foremast too far forwards. It might just be a matter of a few studs, but it seems somewhat unbalance presently. Other than that, brilliant work. And for clarity: I APPROVE! And now you might learn why it is a snow. If you look closely, you will see that she has a small mast(a trysail mast) just abaft the mainmast, on which the gaff and boom is attached. If they had instead been attached to the mast itself, she would have been a brig. Great idea, actually! However, I am still hoping we will see your personal take on a vessel at some point, Gideon! Might I try to "un-ignore" you? The sails you are missing would be staysails. They are called so, as they are hoisted on the stays, which again are the ropes keeping the mast from falling backwards and forwards. (The shrouds are the ropes on the sides, keeping the mast from going sideways) Therefore, a jib is also a kind of staysail, but specifically one carried between the foremast and the bowsprit. (Generally, we refer to all those sails as "jibs", but they actually have several different names... Let us not go into that! Then I will just get confused too) All staysails, including jibs, are a kind of fore-and-aft rig, as is the spanker, (The big gaff rigged sail carried on the trysail-mast (see above) in this case) and their function on a square-rigged vessel is to give it better performance when sailing close to the wind. (If you imagine the vessel doing that, you will see how they are more useful than squaresails in that situation.) In some situations, stay- and squaresails might be set at the same time, but often not. So actually, there is nothing strange in the fact that the staysails are not up in the present picture. I hope that made sense, and that you walk away from this smarter than before!

I am with you on this, Sir Stig. Quality over expediency, and as you say, there is a lot of work behind it! I am wondering if not the calculations of the result could be programmed in some way, for instance in a spreadsheet, to make it easier for the admins. But it is rather complicated... :/ But it is yet another testament to the quality of this game that everyone is sitting on the edge of their seats awaiting the results! ;)
