"How Eltina was saved - CH2b" or The semaphore station
Bregir replied to blackdeathgr's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Apart from the obvious misrepresentation of reality (Corrington would never disrespect the peace between our Empires - Aaaand, if we did so, a few puny horsemen would not keep us from our objectives! ), I really like this build, and the story that goes with it. Introducing semaphores is brilliant, and I dare say you will see them emulated (and obviously, much improved) by Corlander engineers some time in the future. The overall look of it is nice, and the idea of a small garrison at the site is very realistic. Both barrack and the semaphore itself is executed very well and (apart from those very ugly blue uniforms ) the minifigs are cool too! The smoke is a nice detail, as is the cook, but my favourite is the fact that the semaphore arms are not perfectly level. It speaks to my sense of realism, and my prototype of Oleanders as unable to do anything properly! All in all, very good entry - and I would say this could be licensed as some sort of fortress, as it is a defensive structure. Alternatively a commerce building, as it is a service? -
A question: If I buy a captured vessel, bringing me into the bracket where there is a penalty on licensing costs, do I have to pay the difference before she can be considered active? (Eg. 50 % penalty on the 4th ship would mean 50 dbs for a class 2F) I think this would make sense, but I would like to have it confirmed. Some of us are closing on that limit. And I suppose joint owned ships (like the Sulky Harlequin or the Purple Rain) counts towards the main owner's number? (Mike and Maxim, respectively)

If it were not for the moc'ing deadline, I would too be interested in bidding... (As Mike said: Those with large fortunes ) Now, come on people - make this auction happen - this is far too boring! (Kai, maybe next time, you should try a "dutch auction"? Look it up, they are a lot of fun!)

What is holding you back?

Glad you like it - I think it would work out fine - and in my mind, faction captures can be monetised the same way. And yes, this would only work for captured ships (which means they are licensed). My point was, that if you capture a ship that was already moc'ed, or if you moc your capture, you could get a higher yield.

I am on board, and think this will come automatically as people start telling their stories. All names are, of course, subject to approval by the Crown.- 897 replies

You never get a second chance to make a good first impression, and you definitely took your chance! This is just fantastic. My favourite part is the doors of the gate, but the whole thing is just beautiful. I love the plentiful colours, and it looks extraordinarily rich and decorated, while at the same time it maintains its military functionality. Very well done!

Sorry for the doublepost. In the general BoBS thread, I just put in a suggestion for a prize.court mechanism. Take a look at it vis-a-vis the earlier discussion here. It should make the whole system more flexible, while keeping in with story, immersion and realism. PS. That title - I sure hope I can keep my finances in order!- 897 replies

Thank you... I guess I have a suggestion to add to my above points. The option to have your captures condenmed as prizes. Imagine you do not want to use the captured vessel (license) as it is, nor want to hassle with selling it. (Although you could ask someone else to do it, for instance Maxim, for a small fee.) In that case, you can send it to the prize agent, for a part of the license value. The ship will then story-wise be sold to an NPC, possible back in the old world. (It will "disappear" from the game) I'd suggest the follwing calculation: You (well, someone else) rolls a normal 6 sided dice, for the following share of license value: 20 % 30 % 40 % 50 % 60% 75% This will reflect the uncertainties of the prize courts, and the related auctions, but at the same time allowing players to capitalize what they have captured, if they need the money elsewhere, but have no patience for a "real" auction. I cap it at a "lucky" 75 %, as an un-moc'ed ship will always be of less value than a moc'ed one. (If we wanted to allow players to prize condemn moc'ed ships too, we could add 25 % to all the outcomes. That could make it viable to moc a ship, even if you didn't want to use it, but simply to gain more from the prize courts.) Thoughts and comments welcome.

I'd say no. You captured a physical vessel, so it doesn't make sense to do what you suggest. However, you can always sell the ship and use the proceeds towards the other license. There is some discussion on this, but I am lobbying for the above answer to preserve immersion, realism and diversity. Otherwise, it doesn't actually matter what you capture, if it is basically just a lump sum. And I think that would be a shame. I would rather stick to what actually happened in the IC story. It is going to be more fun in the long run.

And thus, I vote for Rosetta! ;) And Skarlett(i)a sounds good to me too. Montoya would be very honoured to have something named after him, but I think an island is too much. Perhaps a royal warship could at some point be named after him in some way. (Not just "Montoya" - that would be odd. :P )- 897 replies

I know, and it is much appreciated. Montoya and Cooke both value their friendship with mr. Coyle extraordinarily! And I simply wanted to ensure that people understood my motivations. And yes, when you are filthy rich, you can afford to stand fast on your principles! ;) And I really feel strongly that the diversity imposed by the mrca, and especially the captures, is a great thing to make builders improve, and provides immersion, which I feel is and should be the core of this. :)- 897 replies

An addendum to Mike's comment: I am not against uplicensing the Sulky Harlequin because of the (beautiful) moc, but for the other reasons stated in my earlier posts. My opinion would be, that is a (substantial) build with a corresponding story explains and shows how and why it is upgraded, then I think it could be acceptable. But it should be rare, and I don't like it for captured ships - they should first be build and used for what they are.- 897 replies

We can auction off the 4As to pay for the 5A if it is the money we are missing! ;) However, I prefer keeping them. And building them! If we could moc them, they would be a powerful fleet (at no cost) for the crown! As for changing class, I would at least expect the moc and story to reflect this. Mounting new guns, refitting her rigging, or whatever. There has to be an IC reasoning for it. (I am still against relicensing, especially for these vessels captured.)- 897 replies

It's called a ransom, Kai. Makes perfect sense :)

The moc obviously needs to back up the license. That is a general rule. My point is more to get diversity and follow the logic of the story. If we capture a 4a, 2t or anything else, that should be reflected in the story and the game. Otherwise, we will not see any diversity in the fleets, as everyone will upgrade to the superior classes. If we start upgrading, captures becomes little more than just a discount on licenses. I prefer the challenge of building the vessels we actually capture. That is my perspective. I prefer the building challenges over the EGS-advantages. :)- 897 replies

But the vessel isn't going to disappear, just because it isn't moc'ed. It just isn't active, before it has been moc'ed, and can be considered under repair or outfitting until such a time. That is why I ask. The game sets no deadline. You do. So why? :P

I support the admirals suggestions with one caveat. I don't think we should upgrade the license. This is due to the immersion and realism factors. I mean, we captured a 4A, so a 4A should be added to the lists. I understand that a 5HA is much more, powerful, but I would rather invest in Navy bonds for another 5HA and then keep these in docks until MOC'ed. (Or sold or given away in contest.) I am not much for all this fiddling with the licenses. It just doesn't seem right to me. I might be looking into purchasing plans (a moc) for a warship, should the right offer present itself. Then we might come to an arrangement for one of those licenses.- 897 replies

Hmm, interesting. I shall be following this closely. However, I wonder what the reasoning behind the MOC'ing deadline is?...
-
That's it - I am going rogue, relicensing all vessels to warships, and will be hunting you down to have at your hides! Much I will abide, but a comparison to that... infernal lubber.... will not do! I have half a mind to require satisfaction of you both, and had I my bricks with me, I should certainly do so! However, a full public apology might just do for now. Might... For now... With "all" due respect, Don Isaac Montoya

I think that technique works really well, also in your execution. I like this little building, and while the wheel could be bigger it works as it is. I am not really sure what kind of forces you need in the production of gunpowder, though. Good idea, and ditto execution. An interior would be cool, of course. Well done!

At least it should attract people looking for an investor! :P
