You are making a nasty habit of this recently, sir!

I really think it is out of place to discuss the morality of whaling here... Given that we have, erhm... houses of pleasure, pirates, and burning natives at the stake!

Bounty runs, surely. However, my point was more the IC vocation than an idea for the EGS. As an inspiration, I mean. I would love to see whalers, whales, whale boats, etc.! ;)

Nice little scene - the first picture has a nice underwater effect, and the sunken ship looks good, overturned and with weeds growing out of it. I would imagine an easier way to retrieve a chest of gold would be to bring down a line, but I guess he must be a very powerful swimmer? Always a pleasure following your story!

[Cor - FB2 March -Ship] A mysterious little boat
Bregir replied to BrickOn's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
It has a very cartoony look to be sure - very cute - and it does seem like it would easily topple over, being that tall and riding so high in the water! Her armament is very unconventional too, but I suppose it works! As to rigging, she is a ketch, with two masts, the foremost one being the tallest. and thus the main-mast. For historical accuracy, she should be carrying a gaff sail on the mizzen though. As to rating, I would say a class 2 WR, as she has a balance between cargo space and armament. Funny little ketch, sir! PS. I am happy to know you are stocking up gunpowder at that fort... It never hurt anyone to be wellprepared! -
A thought for anyone interested. (As I will not myself be able to do anything about it for now...) Have any of considered whaling? It seems to me to be an interesting aspect of the Brick Seas that we have yet not seen. Maxim, I am pretty sure we will need a money sink in this EGS, otherwise people will grow ridiculously rich, which only leads to lack of boredom and inflation. And outfitting large vessels, especially for war, should be a costly affair. And we don't want to inflate the wealth even more for those who have amassed the funds to buy such a great warship. Equility and balance, eh? Further, the use of such a vessel should be connected with some advantages and disadvantages, so that they do not completely take over the seas. However, I agree that the risk of being lost at sea is very large. Therefore, I would suggest some sort of attribute that makes ships over a certain size much less prone to being lost at sea. (A large ship will endure much heavier seas than a small sloop.) But perhaps this is already part of the MRCA 2.0? And maybe there will be some modifiers from the skill-system, when that is launched? I sure hope so! In any case, I understand your concerns, but disagree with your proposed solution!

Very nice gun-brig, Dr. Spock! I wouldn't exactly call her lines elegant (For that, I would like some more curvature in the hull), but they are very clean, and she looks very well tended with those shiny black sides, and the gleaming decks. It seems her capturers have done a great job in putting her ready to sea! If it isn't just spit and polish, of course... I like the use of those shudders for the hatch, and the curved, integrated cabin and the flush deck works very well too. (BTW, I don't think I have ever seen a brig with a closed gun-deck. Most/all carried them on the open upper deck.) Those shrouds are amasing, but my fingers almost hurt at the thought of putting on those ratlines! (Insta-arthritis, anyone? ) I do think the hard work paid off - it really looks fantastic! With that in mind, I would have liked to see a little more in terms of stays (fore- and back), but that is your own faults for raising the bar with those shrouds! As to the sails, I think another headsail would fit her well, and she seems to be lacking a foretopgallant (3rd square sail on the foremast). This makes her look somewhat overrigged on the mainmast, and I fear she would have a tendency to gripe! Additionally, the mizzensail would typically be a gaff-sail, (The boom below complemented with a gaff at the top, increasing the sail area. Sometimes without the boom, even. ) instead of the triangular type, which name escapes me currently. Generally, you are raising the bar on rigging, which is why I raise the bar for my feedback! :pir-grin: Lastly, a general comment on armament. I would generally like to see builders give some thought into armament, aside from just the number of guns. Afterall, 4 pounders and 32 pounders are two very different creatures! For a small gun-brig like this, it would probably be 4, 6, or 8 pounders. I am not too concerned with them being represented by Lego cannons or brick built versions, as the scale can be hard to achieve, but a lot of people seem to assume that a 8 gun cutter (eg. 4 pounders) has half the firepower of a 16 gun brig (eg. 8 pounders), when in fact the broadside weight is 16 vs. 64 pounds. (Thus, I also find think that the gun-rating of the ship-licenses should be thought of as a representation of broadside weight.) All in all, great vessel though. I suppose this could be considered a MRCA result build, or a freebuild, depending on the choice of the builder?

Thanks! She looks great - very difference from your smaller vessels - you have a wide span! Hope to see more larger vessels from you in the future!

[ESL - FB2 - ship] Winds Beauty (3T2)
Bregir replied to Legostone's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Really nice sloop, Legostone, you are really cranking out a lot of nice vessels these days! The rigigng is looking very nice, and has some good proportions. I generally like the shape of her hull too - very well designed. I absolutely adore the way the cabin is integrated, and the slightly raised quarterdeck. The way the windows are indented looks great. However, she might be a little heavily laden! Is that gold or lead in those coffers? In any case, it does ride very low in the water! Or perhaps she has been holed below the waterline by some pirate, and is now taking in water? I think she is very fitting for the suggested rating too. Well done. -

If one does not watch out, one might learn something of the ancient crafts here! Very well done - that is a very heavy piece of cable - perhaps for an ancor? The landscaping is fantastic, although I hope they get a more suitable place to work at some point -
Great looking little shop, Doctor. The golden gates look nice, and I really like the interior, and how you have arranged the guns and weapons on sale. My favourite detail is the guns on the table!

Very nice scene - I like how you have taken inspiration from the etching. And I too love these affronts, apologies and cries for satisfaction going back and forth. This (including the original challenge) is a textbook example of how to handle it. This way, even without having the duel actually play out, it brings something to BoBS! -
[Cor - FB1 March - Ship 2F] The Morning Rose
Bregir replied to BrickOn's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice cutter, BrickOn. I think Sir James have made a very sensible investment. I think the brick built hull turned out pretty well, and I like the whitewashed decks! Ship-shape and Bristol fashion! Nice rigging too - the sails are looking really nice. I think the mast might be a little on the short side. Normally, the boom if the mainsail wouldn't overreach the stern of the vessel. So for it to be completely correct, you should either move the mast forwards (and by most definitions turning her into a sloop rig, or shorten the boom. With a higher mast, you could more or less maintain the same sail area by making the mainsail taller. However, on a cutter, the main sail would be smaller than on a sloop, as the sloop relies more on the big mainsail. With a taller mast you could also add a square topsail, but that is only a suggestion, which is not necessary to make her correct. The current rigging is still pretty good, though! Well done. -
Thanks for the clarification, Ska. And let me know when (/if) you would like me to take a look at the reviewed vessel classes. I am at your service.

March 616 - Corrington's Escorted Trade Runs
Bregir replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I should like the HMS Otter to join the Fire Trader convoy, preferably in flotilla with the Lady Jacqueline. The Sphinx will, as usual, join the Merry Lyric. -
From fore to aft, fore mast, main mast, and mizzen mast. On single masted vessels, there is only one mast, thus a mainmast. On two-masters, it is a bit more complex, but the tallest mast is the mainmast. If the main mast is the forward mast, it would typically be a ketch, while the other way would make it a brig (square rigged) or a schooner (fore and aft rigged). I am using the kind of string used for suspending tents. It has the right elasticity and thickness (a little less than a mm, I would think). It can really be given the right tension to hold the masts up.

That's the spirit! For King (/queen) and country! -
Of course! Blowing up stuff is fun! ;) If you were a pirate, and the only prey was a fishing boat, wouldn't you "appropriate" it? I would! I am not a pirate at heart, but a little prize money never hurt anyone! :D To the most honourable Captain Saxchsenhauser, I completely admit my mistake and hope that you will accept my full apology. I shall venture to be more critical as to my sources of information in the future to avoid further misunderstandings. I shall require no proof of your statement, but that of your word, which I regard as as much. Should this be insufficient, I will offer you any satisfaction you might require. Your servant, Don Isaac Montoya

March 616 - Corrington's Escorted Trade Runs
Bregir replied to Mike S's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Rumours have it that there might be more escorts available for this month's runs, so probably more flotillas will open up. For now, I'd suggest just signing up to your prefered route, and I am certain mr. Coyle will do his best to accomodate us all. It is never unfair to add more ships to the merchant fleets of the Crown! -

Bregir replied to TitusV's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
What an EXTRAORDINARILY well written story! (And how I hate finding typos in my own words... But Titus did put me under timepressure!! ) Lovely build, Titus. While I couldn't place it myself, I knew the style reminded me of someone. I see clearly now that it is of course inspired by Jacob Nion. Arlinsport, Tiberia, 616 Dear Sir James, It has come to our attention that you may have an interest in becoming a fellow of the Society of Natural Philosophers. Currently, we have only peripherical knowledge of your work, but will be more than willing to review it upon official application. Best regards The Executive Committee, The Society of Natural Philosophy OOC: Well, I am of course interested in more members, but currently, the Society is merely a figment of my imagination, so basically I have no clue how it will work in terms of game mechanics. However, I of course hope that it will at some point be recognised by the Crown as one of the fraternities of Science in Corrington. As to membership, I am thinking that characters who have an IC interest in natural philosophy (It does not need to be their main occupation, but it should be reflected directly or indirectly in some builds) will be eligible. There will probably be a small moc requirement for joining, (Something like a vignette showing the character giving his introductory presentation for the Society) but nothing is set in stone yet, and the first fellows will of course have a say. Send me a PM for more info. The Executive Committee would like to clarify that the title of Mecenas is merely honourary, and in no way qualifies the holder for approving membership of the Society. Only through rigerous peer review of scientific work and merits can applicants be approved, and only by the Society itself. But thanks for the marketing, Titus!- 9 replies

We will get back to you on this later, mr. Coyle. Other business have to be coordinated with this prior to taking that decision. You shall be the first to know. Best regards Ibn al'Sayeed -
There is no reason why a flotilla could not go on a bounty run, escorted by a powerful fleet. But yes, they are very much hit or miss. It can be understood to include everything from fishing trips over scientific expeditions and treasure hunts to bounty hunting (I.e. Hunting down a pirate)
