Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gideon replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
I agree that we should not make a map first, we should just get started building and see how this town evolves in a true Kaliphlin manner The community build should probably be open-ended, and having 6-8 months for the first challenge sounds like a good idea to fill out empty time between challenge 1 and 2 and potentially between challenge 2 and 3. I like the idea that building the main gate should be the first challenge to get the whole community build started. Then popular vote would decide which entry is the true one i assume? The drawback of this approach is that only one of the MOCs would actually be "canon", and other the other MOCing hasn't fleshed out the town. But as the gate fort really is the centerpiece of this town, I don't see any other fair approach to decide who gets to build it. Putting the index in a second post or something like that sounds good to me, or if you feel up to keeping it up to date (with the contributions posted in the thread) just reserve a section in the first topic. I only volunteered to this because I feel some responsibility to put some time in running the community build when I have been lobbying for the CB in the first place I have some ideas for how the town wall should look, I might be able to build a suggestion or three of how it could look and post it here. For the sake of making the different sections of the wall looking like they should fit together I think we could have a "connector solution" with a couple of technic bricks to give the impression to viewers that the wall sections fit together (and if by any chance some Kaliphlinites end up going to the same convention we could join pieces together). -
That senior minotaur with long horns looks really mean I like the overall design and color choices, but the walls have a tad too much details in my opininon.

Very good job creating that "last stand" feeling in the whole MOC

Book II Challenge 1 (Category B): Reclaiming the Fort
Gideon replied to PenPlays's topic in Guilds of Historica
Just the right amout of black to make it work (as black is notoriously hard to photograph) The minifig posing is well excecuted. -
Very interesting choice of colors, and the shape of the whole build looks good as well I agree with de Gothia that there's some room for improvement on the photography. You should use a more uniformly colored cloth or something else on the table, preferrably the same color as the backdrop or even just let the backdrop continue underneath the build. I also think you should either take a picture showing the whole MOC or detail pictures clearly not intended to capture the whole build, not pictures where most of the MOC is present but some parts cropped away.

The building, the trees and the targets look good I also think the foliage looks good, but I would have expected a path to each target where they have trampled the plants when going back and forth to retrieve their arrows

Very good job with the texturing and overall shape of that tower! I also think that big shield works very well in the way you used it. I do not however fully buy your explanation for the missing arrow slits/windows...I still think some should have been there

Very good job with the landscaping (especially the SNOT cracks) and general atmosphere in this build, and that lady looks incredibly evil

Book II Challenge I Category A: Defeating the Lake Monster
Gideon replied to Kai NRG's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very good job with that monster! I agree however that the water splash effect could have used some more work (or just some more scattered trans-clear parts?) -
Book II Challenge 1 (Category C): Village of Sorrow
Gideon replied to PenPlays's topic in Guilds of Historica
The eastern parts of Kaliphlin seems to have a bit of Far Eastern architecture, and this shows that this kind of architecture also exists in Nocturnus, interesting! UoP DoH +1 for both claims. -
Good job on the minifig posing and storytelling The photography is also good, but I think the pictures are a tad too washed out. I think you could lower the exposure a step or so and get the colors to look better. A small note on the first picture, when using dual-side faces and headgear/hair which doesn't cover the whole back side you should be careful how you orient the minifigs. The tan-haired guy has an extra mouth in his neck UoP DoH +1 for studs up rocks and for mosaic floor.

Book II: Challenge 1 (A) - Yellow Man in a Yellow House

Nice fire effect -
Good shape of the vignette, and I agree that the slope makes the whole vignette look better I would however have preferred tiles on top of the fences.

Book II: Challenge I Category C Words and Wisdom

I think those houses are quite neat, but I think the ground in between them should probably at least have paths without vegetation as people probably walk around there? -

Good job with the minifig posing, I especially like how you did the cut off hand -
Challenge I (Category B) The tower at Blood Lake
Gideon replied to de Gothia's topic in Guilds of Historica
I don't know how I had missed this (well actually I think I know since I was busy getting my entries posted in time, and there so many entries in challenge I that I still havn't gone through them all yet...). Anyway, I really like this build of yours (as usual). The idea of the cutaway tower and the "water" looks great as well! Heads on spikes seems to be a very common Black Sprire sign, almost more recognizeable than black and white flags The part I'm not as fond of is the cutaway flat rock at the edge below the tower, which I think seems a bit too "ad hoc" with its vertical lines. I think it would have been improved by either a discreet overlapping brick pattern or even better if there had been some subterranean color difference to the rock. -
Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gideon replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks for the picture! (and for making me Google Loarre castle and finding more inspiration ). I am inclined to think that an ancient citadel (maybe still partly ruined?) could be a great addition to Sultan's Gate, I still think however that the actual gate fort should be the most important defensive structure. But maybe they are the same building? Anyway, should we make a list of claims for what we intend to build (like the Albion CB), or should we just start building and let there for example be different renditions of the main gatehouse? When we get going, I think we should make a separate topic for Sultan's Gate with all information an index of the builds (I could create the topic and maintain the index) similar to the Albion index. -
Lots of details in such a small footprint! I really like that sheep design

Book II Challenge 1 C: Recruiting a Cyclops Tribe
Gideon replied to Gideon's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thank you all! Glad you liked the hut design so much since that was the part of this MOC I put the most effort in Thank you! It seems like the dark orange is a matter of taste, some people seem to think it a bit out of place...but I like it in combination with the brown/dark tan and I'm glad you agree -

Nice figs and storytelling I think however that the scene would have been improved by a more detailed floor.
