  1. I am sorry to say, but there is no real modern substitute for the hinge you describe. You could possibly use these modern parts, but they do not close flush. Also, yes, Medium Stone Gray is closest to old gray. The difference is almost unnoticeable, in fact.
  2. Here's another one: Track links fit perfectly in 1x1 bricks, as seen in this thing:
  3. There is no real specialized part, but I've used standard clip pieces with the chain links, and the tread links will actually fit in any pin hole, albeit very tightly.
  4. I don't know what you are really talking about with power functions motors. I mean, have you built creations and have had terrible performance, or are you just saying things. In my experience, PF motors offer plenty of torque, often without compromising speed. If you have problems with that, you've usually built the drivetrain wrong. Also, I've broken gears, as have many other builders. Just ask Boxerlego or Sariel, and they'll tell you all about it. Also, if the PF system is "torqueless", how can ZBLJ's Fox pull a car, or his entire vehicle collection?
  5. I think something good to try with this crane is to have the outriggers automated, so they move out and lower automatically, controlled by one motor.
  6. I'd be inclined to agree. The redesign compared to the original model is terrible, and it is yet another boring car with an unrealistic drivetrain and a two way splitter, just like 42029. At least 42000 had interesting suspension. Also, in the designer video, Milan and Markus both seem a little bit disinclined to describe the model as good, and it feels as if they didn't like the stuff the marketing team told them to say.
  7. Meh, it's because of the fact that 8421 exists, and the inevitable comparisons, and how 42009 is not as original, or whatever. I, however, say different. It's a great set, and great for anyone who likes 8421. Sure, it's not perfect, but no set is. I think you got a great deal on a great set, and will enjoy it. And, if you ever get tired of it, the B model is pretty nice, and we on the forums have two ongoing threads about making it better. For me, a good flagship is innovative, and has great functions. 42009 is not quite as innovative, but it has great functions, and is fun to play with. 8043 was very innovative, and had a lot of great functions as well. 42030, however, I'm kind of dubious of. It's not very technically exciting, but it's fun to play with. I don't dislike it, but when it comes to what I will be spending my hard earned money on, it's not near the top of my list.
  8. Reading through this thread, I noticed that 8043, 8258, and 8110 are mentioned more than anything else. Have we found the 3 best Technic sets?
  9. This is some good stuff. I actually could not tell that the first Claas tractor was made out of lego parts. Also, this builder is using Bruder wheels and tires, which is not purist, but looks a lot better than anything you could achieve with standard Lego tires.
  10. Hmm, this is a difficult question. My personal ones would be: 1:41999 2:8110 3:8258 4:8043 5:42009 While I do very much like 8366, it does not make this list because it is technically a Racers set. Also, if I were to ever downsize, I'd get rid of most of my system sets, because I have a lot of them, and I'm more of a Technic builder. Also, as Erik Leppen pointed out, these are the ones I would have in order to display, and not for parts.
  11. I've actually heard that the 4L axle is more expensive than either a 5L or a 3L axle, because it uses an older mold, so this actually has some basis.
  12. Going by that graph, we're actually at a high point for 1x16 Technic beams.
  13. Maybe it's an homage to that, to evoke the look without violating trademark?
  14. To answer your question more directly, there are a lot of good Technic pieces in Bionicle sets, particularly early ones. 8596 has a lot of useful parts. Any Toa Mata have useful gearbox torsos. Any Rahi have lots of Technic parts. The Rahkshi and the Vahki have a lot of useful modified beam parts in their torsos. Any of the Metru titans have lots of great parts, and in rare colors to boot.
  15. I figured out what I did wrong. The video won't preview, but it will embed as soon as you finish editing the post. I hope this will help help other people.
  16. It didn't work, I did it exactly as you described, and it just comes up as the code you showed above, but with no video. I'm also using Firefox, if that will help you make suggestions.
  17. I've spent a while trying to embed a Youtube Video in my post, and have been unable to. For some reason, it just disappears.
  18. This guy on YouTube did it, not sure if it's going to be any help to you. The primary difficulty is the steering, but other than that, it should be fairly simple to do.
  19. It looks cool, but I don't think it will have any kind of terrain abilities, due to 9398's already high center of gravity, and all the weight above it.
  20. It wouldn't be that much of a bummer if they redid the unimog, Especially if they did it in a new color, or with a new set of attachments. Yeah, the Race Truck is a boring model to begin with, I really do not understand why they would do a reissue. It's not like fans have been clamoring for it, or anything. Also, it's not like it's going to set a precedent for reissues of other, more desirable sets, like 8455. And, in one sense, it is inferior to the original in that the b model instructions are not included.
  21. it should be fine, as long as you don't scrub too hard, or use any kind of solvents.
  22. That depends on what kind of tracks you want to use, as Lego makes 2. The smaller kind: These tracks can be used with any straight gear, as in regular 16, 24, and 40 tooth Technic gears, as well as both kinds of Technic turntable. These tread, however, are a little bit weak, and not well suited to a large motorized vehicle. The larger kind: These larger treads are newer, and more robust, and unlike the smaller ones, are more suited to large vehicles. They also have specific sprockets to use: Sariel actually devotes an entire chapter in his Unoffical Technic Building Guide to tracked vehicles and related things, you should check it out if you're into that kind of thing.
  23. Actually, there has never been a wheeled lattice boom crane in Technic before, and only 1 crawler crane (8288). But, you're right about the tow truck. regarding power functions, I don't really care either way as long as the model is good. What I really want is pneumatics, and that darned metal hook. Sadly, I doubt that we'll be seeing it again, even though it is a functional need for large crane models, particularly 42009.
  24. I've got a version: The wheel is not connected, but if built in real life this would work perfectly, because I have tested it. (I don't have pictures of the built version because my camera has no batteries.) Lxf: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/saberwing2/Ideas/sla.lxf
  25. I think if Lego makes another small to medium sized excavator, it should be pneumatic for maximum playability.
