  1. If someone told you how to make your model then it wouldn't be a MOC (My own Creation)! The best way to learn is by experience, and then best way to get experience is by trying things. Don't choose something too complicated until you have developed some skill. A giant crane is among the most complicated models to make from Technic, so you might want to try something simpler. Perhaps try expanding 42042 until something breaks, then concentrate on that area and figure out how to make it stronger.
  2. Because he put a lot of work into it purely so that others could build it.
  3. Most people (including myself) probably didn't recognize it as a lyric, but it really doesn't matter. Bringing inflammatory anti-religeous rhetoric into a Lego forum is unnecessary.
  4. I finished the LDraw file sans hoses. The following parts still need to be replaced: Grille emblem replaced with Captain America shield Long pneumatic cylinders replaces with dummies Grabber buckets replaced with dummies Telescoping rack gears and brackets replaced with dummies
  5. 10 : 10 14 : 6 11: 4 9: 3 15 : 2 13 : 1
  6. Nice work! Would you be willing to share your crane file so I can add it my truck? I can replace the new parts later.
  7. All GBCs are of no use. That's the point!
  8. It is probably going to look exactly like this:
  9. I've now got the model complete except for the crane.
  10. I've been working on an LDraw model of this set based on the instructions. It is taking a long time but I am making good progress. I wonder if Philo is working on those new parts? For now I have put in substitutes.
  11. That's a pretty incredible creation. Reminds me of Akiyuki's axle sorting machine except that his machine is purely mechanical and this one is Mindstorms. I like the clever use of pneumatics as an ejector.
  12. I was also confused by V2, although I would say they should be V3. The original pneumatics were single acting and required a distribution block. V2 were dual acting and worked totally differently, so were clearly a new generation. I'd put both the square and round bottomed versions in this new category. The newest pneumatics are not really a new version, they are just expanding the existing series with new lengths. The fittings are slightly modified and so are the rod ends.
  13. This question should probably go to "Forum Information and Help". I'll move it there. I'm interested in the answer.
  14. I'm in favor of keeping old sets original. Old and new dark gray are indeed quite different, but there's nothing wrong with the old color on this model.
  15. I never had M.A.S.K. toys as a kid, but if they were anything like this then I wish that I had.
  16. I took a look at your file. Your problem is that you are including the edge lines. Go back into LDView and shut off the edge lines and your file will get smaller by a factor of 100.
  17. The only time I've ever run into a problem with the 32-bit 2Gb limit is when I rendered a model with 250,000 parts. For a model like this, memory should be no problem at all. If it is not working, I'd guess that the problem is not memory. What error are you getting?
  18. On Tuesday night I finished building the lower assembly. I had lots of fun commanding either a left or right turn by flicking the trigger for the armatron mechanism. I did find that during a switch from left to right you don't get 90 degrees due to lost motion in the system, but as explained earlier all this error later cancels out. Last night I built the brain but didn't have time to "program" it with the proper relative sequence. Today I finished the model and tried it out and .... it didn't work! It kept commanding both turns at the same time and often the armatron mechanisms wouldn't stop at all. I screamed "Alexander" as I shook my fist at the sky. Then it finally occurred to me that I might have done something wrong. It turns out I used 6L beams instead of 7L beams to connect the upper part to the lower part which resulted in nearly continuous commands being generated. I fixed the problem and now it works great. You can watch this thing mesmerized for a long time. I was surprised by how much power a turn takes, but it makes sense when skid steering with sticky rubber tires.
  19. You should take apart the model before selling it to anyone anyway. Then you can inventory the parts.
  20. Amazing! It is hard to believe that this is all from one person. I see that his Invisible Lift was sitting at the end of the table but not connected, and I didn't see his Bucket Factory included.
  21. Ripstop Nylon is a common material for these and also for kites.
  22. The sticker on the side of the crane says "250 ton" so even if it not supposed to be a particular crane, it is supposed to be a fairly large crane. The HS 895 is about right.
  23. In the early days of Bionicle there were many models that blurred the line with Technic.
  24. For the 40th anniversary of Technic, Lego should fly me Alasdair Ryan to Billund and collaborate with me on the best set ever.
  25. Indeed so, but working with a fixed palette of non-specialized parts is what makes building with Lego so different than engineering a truck. For me, technical Lego building is about breaking down a structure and function into its smallest constituent parts. Once you make one big part to take the place of many, some of the appeal is lost.
