BMW i8 Spyder
Blakbird replied to Sheepo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
My opinion is the same. I love Sheepo's gearboxes and would not want to see them go away altogether. However, it this particular MOC I think the gearbox was replaced with an equally clever system and it was a good trade. It gives us something new. -

[REVIEW] 2H 2015 Video Reviews
Blakbird replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
If only there were a handy Technicopedia article going over how it works, step-by-step ........ -
I guess if it is supposed to be an excavator then you are right, but I think is intended to be more of a crane. In a real device like this used to scoop sand or loose soil, there would probably be enough vertical pressure from the weight on the buckets. In the case of the model, I just wondered if it would be any easier to control with that upper hose disconnected. The 8421 crane had no hoses for the retract sides of the cylinders, and that actually made it even more difficult to lower the boom slowly. Some people completed the circuit to make it more controllable. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that as the boom lowers the CG moves farther away and therefore the moment increases. This compresses the air in the cylinders and makes them retract even if you stop the air from escaping. Incompressible fluids are easier! I am very interested to see how this looks next to Han's dragline excavator:

[REVIEW] 2H 2015 Video Reviews
Blakbird replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Another great video! I would guess that the lifting capacity was limited intentionally due to lack of counterweight. On a real crane, you would add counterweight when lifting a heavy load. Even with the new turntable, you only want to put so much overturning moment on it. I was really surprised by the complexity of the gearbox because I was not expecting that out of this model. The 8480 submarine B-model uses the same scheme of using the gearbox levers to reverse direction with a constantly running motor. -
Very nice video! Some things I thought of or observed: Looks like it is possible to lower the crane slowly by carefully controlling the valve. I notice that the crane lift cylinder has hoses at both ends which means it is actually powered down. This is probably unnecessary since the weight of the boom will always retract the cylinder. Would it be easier to lower smoothly with the retract hose disconnected? Alternatively, the hose could stay connected but the pump could be shut off. The model would be easier to use with a pole reverser. The battery box switch is hard to center. More compressor pumps would be helpful. Models with lots of switches like this are always hard to control intuitively (I even have problems with 8868). It would probably be quite a bit easier if the stickers were installed to give some visual reference of what the switches do. The suspension reminds me of what grazi did on his 5571 tow truck mod:

I really like your sequential gearboxes, but I don't miss it when you replace it with so many other excellent technical features. You have outdone yourself again. -
Akiyuki's Cup-to-Cup GBC
Blakbird replied to djm's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow, thanks for the effort! I know how much work it is to create instructions and Akiyuki's models are amazing to build. Really looking forward to your Step 4. It would be fantastic if we eventually had a library of instructions for all of them. -

Because only people with no kids can afford a supercar. -
The limiting factor on pressure is not the hose connection. If it was, we would have seen the hoses pop off in the video. The limiting factor is the piston seal on either the cylinders or the pump. I expect it was the pump because we saw about the same max pressure in every case. Based on ninjasno's tests, we know pressure can sometimes be as high as 40 psi before hoses come off. When depressing the pump against high pressure, you can feel when it starts to slip. So you would get slightly higher output force by using an external compressor instead of the Lego pump. I expect that they intentionally made the pump an effective pressure limiter.

The new and old valves are functionally identical. It has always been possible to control rate by careful use of the valve, it just takes a little practice.

[MOC] MAN TGS 8x4 Dump Truck
Blakbird replied to M_longer's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I had similar problems. I also found that since not all motors have the same length wire, my L motor wire would not reach the receiver. I had to add an extra extension cable. But I eventually got everything to fit. -
Thanks so much for the review. My only complaint about it is that it wasn't me who got to review it! A couple of things I noticed: At long last LEGO has taken our advice and started outlining the black parts in the instructions with white lines. This makes it 100x easier to tell the difference between black and dark gray. The new stepped ports on the pneumatics have the same ID but an effectively smaller OD at the tip. This may make it harder to modify them for LPEs. The head end of the new large actuators is longer and is now only 1 stud wide instead of 2. There appears to be a new black rod end on the big actuator which is taller than the old rod end.

No, it has nothing to do with friction in this case. The tan 4l axle has a stop in the middle which prevents it from migrating out of its supports if installed properly. It was introduced in 9398 for explicitly this purpose.

Cool engine. From the video it looks like the prop centerline is orbiting a bit. I suppose you technically need a balance weight for dynamic balance. -

Creating empty, useless topics
Blakbird replied to mahjqa's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A "hide (or ignore) this thread" button would be awesome! I don't think pinning more topics is the answer. I was recently on a forum in which 20+ topics were pinned. It means you have to scroll down just to see anything new and hardly any new topics fit on a page. I think 5 is about the max number of topics that should ever be pinned, and ideally it would be 2 or 3. On the other hand, we have a pinned index topic and it can link to the other important reusable topics. I also often have trouble with the search function, even when I know exactly what I am looking for. More consistent use of thread tagging would probably help a lot with that. -
[HELP] Tracks
Blakbird replied to N-4K0's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
There is no difference in the mold between black and gray tracks, but some older tracks (regardless of color) did use a different mold. The overall length is the same, but the maximum bend angle is different.
