Ok, so it was a clearance issue to avoid the 16:20 ratio. Makes sense! If it is a 2-1 spacing all around, though, I don't think this can be right: since it's usually a 28/8 ratio that fits in that space, right?

Very cool! Interesting to see a 3-speed in there--I've got a couple questions about it. Why did you use 28T diffs instead of 16T clutch gears? It seems like it takes a lot of space and decreases strength, but was that just the only efficient way to get the gear ratio you wanted? Also, you said you've got both 24:12 and 28:12 ratios--how does that work? 24:12 and 28:8 would make sense for the same 2x3 stud spacing, but in order to get 28:12 you'd need some sort of unusual spacing. Is that correct? Looking forward to a video!

Makes sense! I'll have to get myself some once they're available--probably lots of applications that aren't immediately obvious- 5,504 replies

Interesting! What uses do you see for it? I can imagine it being useful, but it's not something I ever remember wanting.- 5,504 replies

I've got some ideas for aviation-based models that would be fun to try out (I'm studying Aviation at college now, and am itching to build the stuff I'm learning about). Unfortunately, I have very little orange, and only a moderate amount of white, so I might have to build something smaller and less ambitious than I'd prefer.

Those are some cool concepts! Interesting to see that the TDR can be compacted down to one stud--I wouldn't have thought it possible to do like that! -

Ooh, thanks! I'm in the middle of about three MOCs right now, but I'll see if I can make time to enter! -
Wow, this is an awesomely ambitious model! I can't wait to see it finished!

I love that feeling of pulling one model apart and getting excited for the next! -
Wow, that's a seriously intense distribution gearbox! Nice job!

If you take a scroll up to Sept 20 or so, there was a bit of discussion about that. I think the upshot was that it can work, but it might not engage firmly enough for high-torque applications -

Here's the other ones I can think of: Worm gear Yamaha shift fork Driving ring lever The last option is the one I've found most practical for general-purpose use!- 5,504 replies

If you mean what I think you mean, I did try that last night when I was messing around. It could kind of work, but there's a couple issues. First, the axle holes look like they'd be about 1.5 studs apart, which isn't easy to do. Second, you'd only be able to shift gears by sliding that whole assembly, which is a fair bit less convenient than just rotating an axle. I'm not convinced the backlash with this solution is a big problem, at least for a two-speed gearbox like this. I think the worst-case scenario would be one where you're wanting to be in neutral but the driving ring wanders into a gear, which is usually the opposite of what the driving ring wants to do. Plus, I don't really use neutral anyways!- 5,504 replies

I just discovered that the "toilet paper" panel can be used effectively as a switcher for a transmission driving ring! It might not be useful very often, but in this case here, where the 7x11 frame prevents me from fitting typical shifters, it just might be perfect! I haven't given it any extreme testing yet, but it seems to work fine in this relatively low-torque WIP!- 5,504 replies
