TUTORIAL Building your own display case
TheLegoDr replied to steelwoolghandi's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That is really neat. I just never think to build something myself. The lack of tools and knowledge probably helps that. I was going to get a custom cabinet for my minifigures, maybe I should get some plastic instead of glass. Thanks for the pictures. They will come in handy for many readers. -
Bricks cracking... just from being connected to one another?
TheLegoDr replied to Endgame's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I have yet to complain to LEGO directly about the cracked pieces, but I've complained to them about missing pieces other times. They have since made me run through hoops to get anything replaced, so I just gave up trying. -
That was nice of them to apologize, but it does seem the initial person "apologizing" was more apologizing for them not finding the humor in it instead of the source material. Kind of a backhanded apology. I'm glad he persisted on it. I wouldn't have been satisfied with that either. But then again, LEGO didn't directly make it, they just licensed it. So they are at fault, but at the same time the company that designed them is more at fault. Granted someone at LEGO did sign off on it to have it released. It's unfortunate, but I don't see it doing too much damage to their image. Especially with the success of Friends. Also since this is a product that isn't widely available currently.

I am more than okay with just one release a year. I'm already two down because of all the other great sets they come out with. I think they only release one per year because it can't handle more than one per year. Star Wars has rabid fans, so they can accommodate two UCS sets a year. I don't know how rabid the modular fans are to eat up multiples a year. My bank account thanks me that there aren't more.

Lego Superheroes 2013 Rumours & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CorneliusMurdock's topic in LEGO Licensed
So I'm sure it was covered last year when the Avengers sets came out, but I recall everyone complaining about Loki's staff and how inaccurate it was to the film. I believe everyone talked about the Elven sword looking closer to the weapon used in the film (and it was). But I only bring this up because I watched the first Thor again recently and the staff used by Odin and Loki (later in the film) looks seemingly identical to the staff they gave Loki in the Avengers sets. The sai stuck in the pharaoh's quest mummy staff looked really good compared to that source material, just not the Avengers source material. This has nothing to do with Iron Man or Superman currently, but I found it interesting so I thought I would bring it up. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 10 Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I actually really like Mr. Gold, but I don't like the chroming. I think he would have looked better in pearl gold personally. I don't care about the rarity. If I get one, I'm not going to come on here and brag to everyone how I have it. More power to the people that do have him and want him, but I've never been one to brag. My wife gets mad at me because I'm so humble about things. Either way, I do like how he looks, but if I find him I won't keep him. I do wonder if the ~$600 will stay that way the more that are found. That does seem ridiculous for one figure, but people are obviously paying it. I'm also not collecting every single figure of every series, so I don't feel incomplete without him. But I have noticed even though I don't want some figures, I end up getting them in case I ever need their accessory or face or hair or something (if it is unique to that figure alone). So I've picked up quite a few I didn't care about for that reason alone. But thankfully the latest series actually has about 12 figures I want and half of them I want multiples of, so I guess TLG is doing something right.- 1,076 replies

Cara - those Wal-Mart tubs look really expensive. I'm sure I've seen them there, but have never considered picking them up. But they look good for people that want a bin instead of a drawer. I think I'm going to go the drawer route. As far as that Joann divider, I've never seen that before. I like that you can change the size of the dividers. I never go in there so I would never have thought of it. Thanks for showing me that.

I've heard they have actual builds. I think they did one yesterday for May the Fourth. From what I can tell it is similar to the mini builds at the LEGO store. I've never done any of them, so I can't be for sure.
-
As big of a LOTR fan as I am I couldn't honestly tell you anything about Minas Tirith, other than the white tree in the courtyard and Denethor running off the edge really. So as long as those pieces would be in the set (obviously not to scale), I'd be okay with it. From what I can read, the front gates are important too. That MOC was brilliant. All of their MOCs are regarding LOTR. I'd be surprised if LEGO didn't do something similar to most of them, just with their own flair.

Like many others I bit on the B-wing. I think within a few minutes of the sale going live I ordered it, even though I'm not sold on the set itself. I think overall it will be a fun build and look great in the end, but since it isn't as iconic as some of these others, I only bought it because of the price tag. After reading the review of the X-Wing, I definitely want to pick that up sometime. I assume it will be on the shelf for a year? So I got B-Wing (poster+Han) and then a second order I got Rancor Pit and A-Wing (poster+Han), a small PAB for some MOCs and 14 CMF series 10 since I can't find them around here (that also gives me a CMF poster). I can't wait to see these things in my hands. If I find a Mr. Gold, I will sell it and buy the X-wing right away. Otherwise I will wait. I don't have my hopes up.

Those grill pieces work extremely well as shredded paper. I would never have considered that. Keep up the great funnies. I love this thread!

This is amazing. A very strong likeness to the actual. I definitely want to try my hand at copying this. So much better than the official version. Your Batman gets to ride in style now. Kudos!

LEGO® CUUSOO 空想 - Turn your model wishes into reality
TheLegoDr replied to CopMike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Ethically I could understand that. But clearly not everyone is a "man" of their word. I have only supported one project so far even though I have seen many cool projects. The one I supported I would definitely buy into if LEGO did something similar to it, or at least extrapolate the idea. I can understand someone just liking something so they throw their support even though when it comes down to it there are already a lot of other themes out there that take up people's paychecks. -
Yeah, it's been said before by reliable sources that it is the Sydney Opera House. So at that scale, I'm sure they can really do it justice. Although I liked the small version, even though everyone else hated it. I have no affinity for Australia (or England for that matter), but I got Tower Bridge and I will probably end up getting the Opera House too. Can't wait to see official pictures!

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 10 Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I agree with the random sentiments. Of course with enough determination/time/money, you can search and search and find one. But there is no guarantee. It seems random is the way to go. I always feel the packets for what I want and obviously if I feel Gold. I will get him automatically (no brainer), but since I don't have any yet, I will be feeling for a complete 16, plus a few extras of a few people. Since S@H has them, I did order some since none are in stores around here. By doing so, that does give me random picks, which I normally don't do. So I guess we'll see what I get when someone else picks them for me. I don't have my hopes up. I do find it odd about the distribution. Obviously it will never make everyone happy, but it is weird the numbers they think people will want to collect. It seems, some of the figures I've been wanting the most are the ones with the lowest distribution, and not because of that reason. I just happen to like those the most. Thanks TLG for making it even harder for us. I don't care about Gold, I'm talking about the regular series. I realize not everyone will want them in the same total and TLG knows all about army builders, but why not make it them all equally distributed. I realize it is impossible since 60/16 doesn't equal a whole number, but I'm sure there is some distribution that would make more sense than some with only 2 figures out of 60.- 1,076 replies

Pictorial Review: Han Solo (Hoth) May 4th Promo minifig
TheLegoDr replied to Solscud007's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Thanks for this. I wanted to get this figure, even though many others think it is lackluster. I don't own other variations, so I guess that also helps. I also got the B-wing on a whim. It was hard to pass up on that price, even though I had no interest in it. I don't plan on selling it, so don't flame me please. I like the printing on him a lot. I think that other sided head will look great in some MOC. -
I agree with that idea. I plan on doing the same. Since I look at the front of my Modulars on the shelf, the sides/back don't matter much to me. As neat and complete as it can be (I love the ladder technique on the GG), I can't see myself wanting to spend the time and money on re-creating it when I will never get it down to look at it. Never meaning so rare that it won't matter. I have taken PS down a few times to look at them, but it doesn't matter. So I plan on doing GG in sand green on the front (the modified brick with the vertical slit are expensive I've heard) and then probably light bley on the rest since I have so much extra of that. That will save money for the more expensive parts that are essential to the look. I've seen GG without the slits and it didn't look right. I'm also going to modify the windows and use two 1x2x3 instead of the one 1x4x3. Have fun building.

Nice little build. I think the Eagle may look different if it were brown instead of black?? Also if it was perched on something instead of standing on the ground. But even with that said, I think the Eagle is a great build. I haven't seen it in that scale before. Good part usage! The flag is really neat. I haven't seen the brick-bending technique before, but it makes sense. I think I may have done something similar before, but then scrapped it because I didn't think I would like it. Good job overall!

I can't help but wonder about buying the B-Wing for that price only to re-sell it later. If LEGO couldn't unload them at a higher price, why would a re-seller?? I can't imagine spending $100 on a set I don't care about since I could spend that $100 on something else (other themes included). Now only if Artoo was cheaper!

I know nothing of Game of Thrones, but I've heard about it. Needless to say, one doesn't need to know the source material to be impressed with the scale and detail of a build like this! Very amazing. Makes me want to get back into Castle MOCing. I can't really describe this. Words escape me. Keep up the great work people!

I had basically every Pirates and Castle (and most of Space/City, etc) when I was a kid in the early 90s. My parents had them in a tote (still put together) after I quit doing stuff with them. That was mid-90s. I got them back summer of 2011 and pieced together a few sets. But mostly I haven't done anything with them. All of the pieces are still in the totes sorted when I put them in there 20 years ago.. I only use new pieces for everything I've done since then. But it was nice seeing the instruction manuals. It does bring back a flood of memories. As great as the new sets are, I always have that nostalgic feeling for early 90s/late 80s LEGO. Nothing will top that because that was my "golden age" of LEGO.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 10 Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm pretty sure any unopened (and sometimes opened) products are able to be returned to the big box stores here in USA. I've returned minifigures before because I had duplicates. I felt them in the store, bought them, refelt them at home and realized I made a mistake and returned the extra one (verifying with dots). It's unfortunate, but since the return policy is there, people are free to use it. If I wanted to dump that much money on minifigures in one go, I probably would do the same. I can understand the disappointment, since I've experienced it many times before. The thing is, most people probably did this before Mr. Gold ever existed and still searched for the figures they wanted. How else do you get large armies? Might as well feel through them at your house instead of standing like a doofus at the store. I sound like I am sticking up for these people, but since it is not illegal to do it, then more power to them. I've been disappointed before, but I've also helped many people find what they were looking for also. Kind of level karmic playing field, I guess. I have yet to see any 10 around here and I've been looking for weeks since some people got them well before May 1st. Here it is after May and I haven't seen them near me, but I haven't been to all the stores. I probably won't find Gold only because I am not being proactive about it. I don't really care in the long run. Although, that money could buy lots more LEGO...- 1,076 replies

LEGO Collectable Minifigures General Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Nabii's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I also wonder if they corrected it, otherwise that is a pretty big error. But TLG has had many errors before, so I guess this wouldn't be unfounded. It is nice to see all most of the figures together. I don't count Mr. Gold or Tin Soldier as official figures to the line, but since they are on the poster, it's tough to forget about them. I won't be getting Gold for sure, but I do like that Tin Soldier. -
I think as long as you inform people it is incomplete from original, there would still be some interest. If the price is decent enough, they may be willing to buy it and then get the replacement parts later. Obviously it depends on what you paid for it and how much it would cost to finish it completely. Some people that are just now getting into the Modulars may want a near complete set instead of trying to bricklink it themselves (they may have no interest in bricklinking and want the final product as best as they can). I would also suggest probably as close to the original value minus the replacement costs. If no one bites, then there isn't a market for it at that price. The main thing I would be concerned about is having the total higher than what I paid for it so I don't lose money on the deal. That's the only business advice I can give. With that said, looking at the final models. I don't think I like the tan arch as much as I initially thought I would. The blue stands out, but the tan almost blends in too well. Hard to describe I guess. But I do like the white railing. I think either way works for that. When I bricklink my own MS, I may copy your rail idea. Best of luck!

Done. It will be interesting to see the results.
