MOD / MOC - Upper floors interior for Green Grocer
TheLegoDr replied to BraselC5048's topic in LEGO Town
Interesting MOD. I love seeing interiors in any building, but especially official sets that didn't have them. Just to see everyone's different take on the matter. I like the addition of the walls for the bedroom. that makes sense. I could also see that being a living room and the bedroom being upstairs. I may have to do something like this when (if) I ever finish my GG build. Keep up the good work. -
That is a really neat build. I love seeing large scale layouts in microscale form. I know very little about London, but the buildings I do recognize are easily enough to figure out. I think the downside is scale amongst one another. The double deckers look great, but clearly too large compared to the buildings. But with that said, I actually like the different scaled buildings, making them small enough to see the detail to know what they are. It definitely does look like a pop-up map for tourists. Maybe you could market it as such...hard to carry around the city with you, but it'd be fun. Keep up the great work!

Bricklinking will certainly be cheaper in the long run vs misb or opened boxed versions, but a lot of that goes towards the instructions and box. Granted I haven't built three large retired modulars simultaneously before, so I can't attest to the actual costs, but those numbers seem really high. Especially since you don't have a lot of the expensive pieces already. How much is shipping eating away at your budget? Sometimes spending a little more for certain pieces can cut down on shipping costs. I'd also recommend pick a brick in the LEGO store if you can. Sometimes they have much needed pieces in large quantities. Naturally the rarer pieces won't be there, but I've found sidewalk tiles and light bley bricks available, so that would help cut down the cost some. Best of luck to you there. You should post pictures of your layout when you're done. I'm still working on CC and will eventually get around to the other two. But everytime I start to think I want to build CC, a different project comes up and I use the pieces for that instead. But then again, I'm not a purist when it comes to retired sets so I plan on changing a lot of the interior and not seen parts of the buildings and leave the external front facade alone. Edit: SwissBrick-Thanks for posting that link to Kristel's page for instructions. I didn't know she did that. I've always admired her work.

Unfortunately you can't get everything you want. Chances are you could not get any now and in a matter of years pay more to pick them up. Or think outside the box. I'm not 100% sure, but I thought you had to be 18 for this website? As for getting back on topic...I must have missed it somewhere, but in pictures recently it looked like the Mouth was of an olive? But it didn't look like other olives. Is it a dark tan skin tone? But it might be the lighting also.

The BURPs surprisingly don't look too bad. I don't love them though, but it gives the desired effect. The building itself is quite nice. I like the windows on the side the most actually. I'm glad to see the blue tiles works pretty well for water. I was going to do that effect for my Hogwarts build instead of using the 1x1 trans blue round plates. Although, that looks good too. Thanks for sharing.

Gathering Presents on the Road to Mpya Stedor
TheLegoDr replied to Scarst's topic in Guilds of Historica
Interesting idea. I like the story itself. The ruined castle wall works well. The wagon is interesting. Is that paper? The thing that does strike me as odd, is the stairs coming out. The only way I could feasibly imagine it in reality is if it came out most of the way instead of all of the way and underneath it opened up to release the other people. They'd still have the upper hand that way plus, it'd be easier to still climb down from inside the wagon. I can't help but think the dark elves actually had the drop on them since those guys were all cramped up inside of the wagon. Either way, I'm being too technical. Good build regardless! -
I always tried building all four walls, but sometimes the ending result wasn't as desired. So maybe conserving bricks in one place to use them elsewhere will help the end result. But of course, you are right that it would be hard to incorporate into a larger layout or a convention.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 11 Rumours & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
The funny thing is I never noticed the hair piece was over used... But that's true about situations where you can't have free falling hair, this being one of them. -
Yeah, I wonder why everything had to be so black and white. Not all boys like police/fire and not all girls like salons, but why do people have to continue the gender roles. My daughter loves hospitals, salons, castles, and pirates... As far as kids in a toy aisle, parents do get over protective. It isn't that I don't keep an eye on my kid, but I watch closely enough to prevent something from happening, but enough space to let her have her own freedom.

It does sound like a lot of fun. I may try to go in the future. A few members of my LUG are going, but I think they go pretty regularly. And good call on Malnati's pizza. We just had it last weekend when we were in Chicago for work. My wife researched it and it was rated highly so we tried it out. Very different take on pizza, but good. I like the butter crust.

That's awesome! I love the accordion. Which head/hair combo is that?

Where to begin? Of course, the cheese slopes look great as roofing. I may have to borrow that idea (with credit). The ruling on the walls looks great. The angled stairwell looks fantastic. The dark brown and red brown look great together. The barrels are a nice architectural detail that I wouldn't have thought to use. My most favorite part is actually that you only built half of the building. That inspires me to do the same. I like that concept. make the visible part count and use less pieces overall.

I agree. I like the panels. I don't have nor want want the yellow castle, but I love the rest of the early castles including my favorite Black Knight's castle...The kingdom's castle use of panels wasn't that bad. I don't understand the hate. I just don't love the new castle for some reason. The blue seems off to me and maybe too similar in shape to the kingdom's castle, so I'm not as compelled to pick it up. Plus not liking the heraldry doesn't help.

I think it might be cool to see a TMNT LEGO game. Granted, I don't know what exclusive they would do or if it is popular enough to warrant that. I have some friends who aren't into LEGO, but are into TMNT and would want that game, of all games.

I could see Disney trains. That could be fun. Granted it would be more Duplo trains. My daughter has a different duplo train and she liked it okay. She didn't get into cars and probably won't get into planes. But then again, this is a kid who really likes Batman and other Super Heroes...she is way more into System sets than Duplo, even though she is only 3. But she was excited to see Jake sets coming out. She only recently got into them, but it sure beats a lot of other shows she used to want to watch.

To be honest, I didn't notice it was photoshopped in... so kudos. And money is just a guide really. It means nothing. That's what credit is for...right?
-
I guess that means more for me. I must be the only one that likes the fawn. And I don't particularly care for another bird or puppy. But my daughter will like all three, so I'll buy all of them again if I can find them. Release date?
-
I would assume them to use the scientist hairpiece from Monster Fighters. It's crazy enough without needing a new mold. Who knows..

Should TLC stop photoshopping their pictures?
TheLegoDr replied to merman's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I don't have that figure, so I never would have guessed that. But I really like the original individual stripped version of the grass skirt. That's too bad that it happened. I think the Battle of Hoth is the most misleading since they are only showing the other head print instead of including two figures. -
When did your collection reach critical mass?
TheLegoDr replied to Arigomi's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Since this thread got resurrected, I will comment too. I think there is a point where you end up hoarding sets/pieces/figures and it can be overwhelming. But there is also a point where you have enough bricks to satisfy what you do with them. I have over 100k according to brickset, probably half of which is the older grays and whatnot from the 90s. That half sits in a tote unsorted and I don't even look at it. Out of the remaining pieces (I'm only assuming 50%, I don't know the exact percentage) I can handle pretty much anything I want to build. Naturally you will always run out of a certain piece and/or you'll have a stack of pieces you never use for anything, but ultimately I haven't really ordered much for actual MOCs. I mostly have only ordered certain figures I wanted instead of buying the set. With some of my planned projects I'll have to start picking up some more pieces only because I won't have enough of it in the color I need, but until then I can accommodate most builds I want to do. The bricklink store is a good idea, but if you don't want to take the time to do it, it can be a bit daunting. I have lots of random polybags or pieces that I have no use for, but trying to sell something annoys me because I want immediate turnover and that doesn't always happen. -
Interview with Designer Andy Seenan on club.LEGO.com
TheLegoDr replied to Fugazi's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That is really neat. I always enjoy reading about the designers and their thought process and how they got their start and what have you. My wife glimpsed at this set and was really pleased with it. I may have to pick it up for the little one. It does have lots of neat features. I could see why a kid would enjoy it. -
I didn't read the article, but that is true. Many heads these days do incorporate multiple expressions. And some of them aren't necessarily grumpy, but more determined. Did they include the cocky smirk of Batman to be smiling? I wouldn't consider that a smile. There are so many categories to classify things in that I don't think it can be done appropriately in such a small scale. Either way, I like the diversity of facial expression now compared to the classic smiley all the time. Granted, I did enjoy that quite a bit too....

A very sad toy store experience today.
TheLegoDr replied to Hrw-Amen's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It's good and bad for LEGO. It is like kleenex brand. Everything gets umbrella-d under the head brand. LEGO is coming out with great themes these days. They have nothing to worry about with clone brands. -
Thanks for the review. I've been wanting this ever since I saw it. I'm excited to have Russell Crowe as a figure. Note he can fight around the world. Maybe I'll make a series of MOCs... As far as this figure goes, it's awesome. I'm still trying to decide which sets to get up to the threshold. But I want two for sure. One to open, one to remain sealed forever.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 11 Rumours & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I was expecting a meaner yeti also, but it being a kid's theme, it makes why they went that way. The Cyclops wasn't really angry or happy if you think about it. It would be great for the roof to have a candy cane to allow future cane colors to exist. Perhaps something for the riddler.
