Sr20 det rnn14 variant with solid lifters and a Garret disco potato was my engine of choice.
-
Was this not a 1.8? I thought the sr20 was in the one after this without the pop ups? Or did they do a jdm 2.0 either way, chain driven camshaft as discussed in the engine thread recently would be an excellent thing to replicate.
-
Nissans sr20det has a chain, it’s a glorious and bombproof engine! I thought the Essex had gear rather than chain. I believe it was based on a marine engine originally. I had one in a scimitar hot rod for a while but never investigated inside the engine too much. it used to sound like a skeleton having a w@nk in a biscuit tin at idle so maybe it did.

[MOC] BMW X3

I really like the angle up the side. As you say, unremarkable vehicles require the small things to be spot on as with a lot of these vehicles the bodywork is kind of innocuous. I’d much rather see a moc of this than yet another italian supercar from a teenage boys bedroom wall. -
42124 Off-Road Buggy

For sure. That’s my point though. If you’re looking for an rc experience then Lego is way outclassed but if you’re looking for a flexible construction toy it’s unbeatable. That buggy model isn’t particularly parts rich so it kind of puts it in the territory of cool looking off road rc buggies and if that’s what you’re ultimately drawn in by then there are so many better options. I think Lego’s hubs and electronics end up being a bit pricey for what they actually do. -
[MOC] 1968 Dodge Charger

I’m not really an instructions guy but I’d love to see a straight up Sierra and I’ve already been inspired by your idea to add whale tail rs500 to my list of future builds. you could always build a Cossie mod kit for it when it’s done. I’m interested to see how you do the dash as it’s the same as the rs200. I think a lot of these 80’s and 90’s cars can be quite hard to build as the bodywork is quite subtle and innocuous so the small amount of identifying lines and shapes need to be spot on. Looking at your charger that’s not going to be a problem for you though! -
42124 Off-Road Buggy

I think Lego really nailed the looks on this. 11 year old me would have gone nuts for that buggy. the pricing is interesting as for that money you can get some very capable rc toys and the Lego performance is generally underwhelming in terms of driving experience. -
Yeah I don’t think blue suits a plane as brutal and industrial looking as the hog so I’m going to try to stick to more industrial colours. Blue looks great on stuff like f16s and flankers. Even the a10 demo team have paint jobs that are very industrial looking. At the moment it’s about 108 long by 112 wingspan.

More WIP stuff. ive struggled a lot to get the control surfaces on the wings to behave properly due to limited input from the joystick and the fact that the controls have to be mixed through a number of systems to make the flaps and ailerons integrate. I’ll put some video up soon showing it all working. Since adding the knobs of god to the top of the fuselage this problem has been largely eliminated as the input is now close to the output in terms of both physical position and the number of gears and connections. The joystick moves in tandem with all the surfaces. the three tan knobs control the three axis of movement. The undercarriage retracts now work reliably. Finally, I could use some help... I was counting heavily on the osprey to provide me with dbg fairings and panels. I can’t get the long low fairing parts in dbg anywhere, even go bricks, though those guys are busy before Xmas. I’m fairly invested in the dbg scheme but I need to look at complementary colours to maybe build a camouflage scheme. I’m also quite badly colourblind so struggle with this sort of thing. any suggestions on alternate colours for various parts of this build would be hugely appreciated. Thanks for getting this far down my ramble!

Flaperons [IDEAS]
MinusAndy replied to captainmib's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Actually, on the f14 are we not dealing with elevons on the rear control surfaces? That would be even harder to build as a progressive mix. there’s a dude called Gabor on Flickr who builds some insanely complex rotor heads etc, but they tend to be enormous. A compact version would be really tricky. Im not sure even crash cramers f14 does this and that’s pretty much the benchmark for me in terms of Lego aircraft. -
Flaperons [IDEAS]
MinusAndy replied to captainmib's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You could possibly do that using a diff in each wing that progressively dropped them as the wing swept back but I’m not sure you would be able to accurately make it progressively mix in terms of being able to deploy the flap at varying degrees when it’s influenced by both wing angle and pilot input. I think it would lend itself to hydraulic control pretty easily but treebling that with axles and levers with the limited input of a Lego joystick would be pretty tricky -

If it’s a whale tail Sierra then definitely that one! -

Those are fascinating! I’m in a fortunate position as a good friend of mine has an old helicopter which I have access to and all the linkages are on the outside. It’s fascinating! I particularly like the tail rotor which is wire controlled using a worm screw type thing with wire wrapped around it. I will make a scale one at some point using cord and a Lego worm screw. -
Flaperons [IDEAS]

I really like this solution. I think I’ve had a result last night with my backlash issue but if it doesn’t work then a variation on this is a great compact solution. B be wing able to centrally mount this means I would use at least half the amount of gear connections and that will hugely help the backlash issue. What are people using as a joystick mechanism? -
Flaperons [IDEAS]
MinusAndy replied to captainmib's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah because of limited input from the joystick so much of the overall movement is soaked up by the linkage. I’m currently adding Knobs of God to the back of the fuselage so it directly drives the two diffs and the joystick and rudder pedals follow. -
Flaperons [IDEAS]

I’ve put the aileron input through the middle of a diff in each wing. The diff casing is moved by the flaps and transfers the resting point of the ailerons down. The aileron runs from the other side of the diff. I have spoilers flaps and flaperons on this but it’s requiring a lot of work to stop the backlash. -

The hog is the route I’m going down at the minute. I like the beams instead of axles approach too! Genius idea.
