[MOC] Large helicopter
MinusAndy replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I’m also currently building flaperons and struggling with backlash. We should talk. -
This is a really great point. the drummer in my band is Hungarian and an incredible drummer. His English is also pretty good, good enough as we frequently forget that he isn’t English, particularly on our online discussion. However, his English falls down on nuance and colloquialisms and it often causes situations that we have to sort out down the pub with a beer. the cultural differences are apparent too. He is very matter of fact and it often comes across as rude but it’s not, it’s just his general culture is more matter of fact and it gets lost in translation. these things are all fine face to face but when you don’t have that option things can get very messy and no one argues like middle aged men on the internet!!! However... if you’re taking it really personally when another grown adult is rubbishing your idea/building technique on an Internet forum where we are all nerds messing about with kids toys you maybe need to have a bit of an assessment of what is really important. The same goes for if you see an idea someone else has done and you’re getting on your high horse about it, equally, have a word with yourself. Being best at Lego is like winning the paralympics. You may have won but....... I don’t think a beginners forum is a good idea either as as soon as someone decides that someone’s moc belongs in the beginners section and the creator disagrees it will be the exact same situation but with a concrete parameter to use in an “argument”.

I’ve not been on here long but I’ve noticed that most Mocs don’t get comments in terms of how bits work or how things are created. But comments by grown ups asking for instructions. lego using instructions is basically a jigsaw. if you can count and recognise shapes and colours you can build it. The thing that drew me to this forum is the delight of seeing Mocs that people have created with ingenious functions and use of outside the box parts and building techniques. I feel if we aren’t discussing that sort of thing and just want instructions we may as well just trawl through rebrickable. That said, looking down the front page yesterday showed cool Mocs like the motor grader, huge helicopter, tractor units, an automated warehouse system etc etc. loads and loads of really interesting stuff.

I’d love to see some bad photos and videos of the real thing. I’m something of an expert on bad photography so if you need advice on cluttering up your background with other Mocs, adding blur and poorly lighting it, I’m your man. On a serious note, I’d be really interested to see how you’ve dealt with backlash from the joysticks etc. -
Maybe another competition might lift things up a bit? also, have all the pointy Italian cars and porsches been built now? Maybe there’s now enough of them floating around as many people just copy them for themselves? 90% of the things I build are out of either engineering curiosity or because I can’t own the real thing so I divert my attention into a Lego version which tends to help me get over wanting to own something prohibitively expensive/impossible to buy and it answers the question “I wonder how that works?” For me. I love seeing other people’s Mocs and engineering solutions, especially when you can really see the tinkering and ingenuity in it. I have no interest whatsoever in official sets etc, or buying moc instructions so I love to see people’s inventions on here. I thought tc18 really pulled some great engineering solutions out of people so maybe another competition would pick things up a little.

Fabulous! I have a constant internal battle to not go down the rabbit hole of building a large scale alouette2. Seeing this makes me want to build one even more. The blade droop when stood still will look really accurate too if you can build this physically -
Somewhere on this forum a guy built an epic people carrier a while back that had so many features you’re looking for. I’d search it out and have a look if I were you.

For the brakes you could compromise and put them on the prop shaft. Certainly for the rear.
-
Absolutely. I tend to see the model as a cohesive by product of a bunch of little technical challenges that would be largely pointless in isolation. I have pretty savage A.D.D and lego is literally the only thing that I can focus on for any period of time. I love a tinker and Lego technic is the best way I’ve found to tinker!

I think the main tricycle part is on its fifth overall draft now. Engines probably about ten. I tend to build the left side, see what needs improving and then build an improved version on the right hand side, then back to the left. The right hand wheel pod will be one stud lower than the left one as I tend to build to the best I can and live with it before improving the next one. I’ve spent a fair bit of time working on a construction method for the wings, aside from the shape I’ve settled on building a two skin structure around a central core of frames. Same with the fuselage.

In the spirit of TLG, how about a theme of poorly disguised military vehicles? Like a humanitarian rescue abrahams tank? -
Torn Between Supercars
MinusAndy replied to thekoRngear's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Definitely. I’ll use Rego lift arms, panels etc but the consistent quality of Lego pins and gears is hard to beat (except those shonky tan bevels) -
Downsizing a Lego collection.... Does Not Compute. its a pity we don’t have a parts swap setup as I reckon there are loads of people with excess of certain colours that need other colours etc.

What about the blue Cada supercar? It seems to fill your needs. It’s a lambo and has a high part count and functionality. -
Help! 3D printed wheels
MinusAndy replied to EDL Bricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
They look easy enough to find a Lego solution for. Even if you end up using some non wheel items like radar dishes etc as hub caps. -
There’s someone on this forum who has started making technic third party custom wheels. That might be an option. Or have a look for some Rego ones on Ali express.

I really like how the mechanism for working the grab seems simple until you remember no motors under water and only two cables to the cradle. Clever and understated.

Brilliant. All the camel trophy accessories and off road extras make for some epic treebling.
