[MOC] Rope shovel excavator
astyanax replied to Ivan_M's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Aw shoot, that's impressive!! -
My batch of 4 micro motors just arrived. They all work, and they're surprisingly strong and fast at the same time -- as compared to the old Lego micro motor of which I also have one lying around. I already started thinking, with some planetary gear reduction, maybe it could drive the Bucket Wheel Excavator? At least it's easy to connect them: The motor also fits between the 'legs' of the small linear actuator, making all sorts of little motorizations possible: Interesting times ahead...

@brunojj1 Here's a little trick you might be interested in... I was admiring your model this evening and realized that I had left only one pair of the Bionicle teeth free to rotate: those right in front of the front wheels. I thought these were impossible to fix, but now I found a way after all: This is the #13/14 panel in front of the front wheels. The trick is to use instead of the axle-pin, then push in as shown. Now the tooth will be blocked at exactly the right angle! Note that the new 2L bar with center stop must be used instead of e.g. a 3L bar -- the latter would stick out and collide with the in front of the wheel.

@Bartybum Let me address this in the appropriate thread. Although modding the Sian is a closed chapter to me, I do recall closely studying the model's proportions, but my conclusion was that it's a lost cause, given that retaining the moveable rear wing is a hard requirement. Due to its minimal thickness of 1 module, the rear wing will always look disproportionate. As a result, better proportioning other parts of the rear will never yield satisfactory results as long as it has that wing sitting on top. That was just my conclusion, and that's where I left it at...

After several more iterations, I'm really happy with how the skirts are turning out. Smooth and super strong... maybe even over-engineered haha! I'll post photos/video as soon as I have time to make them, hopefully this weekend. Oh and that 1x6 brick at the bottom-front of the car that keeps falling off when handling the model? Finally I found a totally secure and smooth solution there too... Can't believe I didn't think of it earlier... Good luck knocking anything off the car now! Alright the changelog is pending. Thanks!! The windscreen is indeed as flexible as it looks, but also secure in the sense that it always moves back into the right shape. The tapered curved panels over the front wheels give a super smooth look, but they're also in the way of any fixation points for the bottom corners of the windscreen... As you say, pros and cons! @T Lego and @brunojj1: Yes ping me any time you find yourself on the south side of the Alps! I'm a knowledgeable mountain guide too, y'know...

General Part Discussion
astyanax replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, wink indeed... that's really overkill... Also the price -- 20 euro for a motorization mod? Doesn't make sense... I just want some minimal manual functions like on the big Batmobile (76139) -- steering and maybe some other funky surprise weapon deployment. Anyhow, this is not the "Tumbler mods & improvements" thread, so I'll shut up now.....- 5,507 replies

I might get it if someone publishes a good mod to incorporate functional steering, otherwise it's not technic enough...- 5,507 replies

So I've recolored this amazing model to Lime Green, using only genuine Lego parts, not because I'm such a fundamentalist purist, but because I like a challenge! Huge thanks to @T Lego for his generous support for this project, and for challenging me to use the Sian wheel arches on all wheels! This necessitated many changes to the front, and while I was at it, I also changes many many smaller cosmetic details, just because. I also made every attempt to ensure all the bodywork is fixed in place, nothing is easily knocked ajar... except the side skirts. But I have advanced plans to rebuild them very solidly, using part 71682, but I need to steal them off the other beauty shown in the gallery linked below -- ouch! If there's any interest, I may post a changelog and explain some of the building techniques -- there are some exotic solutions including rubber axle connectors, Bionicle joints, and sausages. Many more photos in this bricksafe gallery. Let me just tag @langko and @brunojj1 who may be interested in seeing the photos in the gallery.

Confirmed. The insertion distance is exactly 1 module in both sides (which is exactly the same as the frictionless 3L pin, and slightly deeper than the axle pins). On the topic of bar insertion, there's this new part: The closed part has a barrier halfway which stops you from inserting an axle deeper than 1 module. However, the barrier has a hole just wide enough for a bar; the bar can go all the way through.- 5,507 replies

@barbanera Don't worry too much about it... As far as I can see, your only offense was misreading the crowd. Although the vid you posted was quite clearly on the 'bad' side, I think there's a grey zone when it comes to mangling bricks on camera. The Brick Experiment channel willfully chews through quite some ABS but that seems to be fine. Also there are plenty of videos where large Lego models are smashed at very high speed against a wall or against each other, predictably mangling quite a few parts. But because they're recorded in super slomo it's suddenly 'mesmerizing'.

Depends on the time of the year also. We have these nice waves of WIP topics due to the Technic Contest. But probably it'd be too much to have that many WIP topic all the time. What I find especially intriguing is to see a WIP topic from a seasoned / famous builder! (Hat off to @Jeroen Ottens, to name one current example.)
