  1. Even cooler would be Adventurers series based on pirates theme - sunken wreck, retro sumbarines, fighting sharks and giant squid, Islanders temple filled with traps. These would make great sets.
  2. @Horation @SevenDeadlyStreamers In general, yes. I also prefer prints over stickers. Although, stickers are easier to remove (sometimes parts with sticker/prints are common and signicifantly cheaper on BL than "naked" version), they could be applied to different part (to another color or completely different shape). Stickers sheet also get handy when you want to get some "custom" sticker. Some people just cut parts of the sticker sheets to get shapes they need, not only from the stickers themself but also from the white background or the color border around the sticker.
  3. In that set there was also Mae Jemison printed tile. This one should also work as ship name. Maybe would be easier to get that one on BL? ;)
  4. @Marooned Marin I would say that first version (reddish brown minifigs, custom sail) works better as an update of pirates theme, it has much more "realistic" vibe. Usage of classic yellow minifigs and colorfull printed sail brings us closer to set-like territory. I would say that you should go for the style you prefer. If it's more realistic approach - custom sail and PotC figs. If it's more set-like approach - yellow minifigs and classic, printed sail. Or maybe you could go all the way and make two versions of the build - not only Islanders with their boat but also with pirates (light nougat parts) and some other details in the build? Sorry for late reply. :|
  5. @Andy-Roo I didn't mean only taking photos of the ship. If you want to build Pirate diorama you basically need 8 baseplates of water around 1 baseplate island. If you want to have bigger islands, the number of water baseplates gets even crazier. Same applies to ships - if you want natural looking diorama of Carribean Sea, you don't want it to be crowded. It actually applies to all type of dioramas - deserts, prairies, plains. Whenever you need free space.
  6. Maybe I got something wrong, thought there are two prizes to get in each of these upper tiers. And in both only one is claimed. Anyway, I'm fine with 25 set. :) Now, let's go back to commenting. :D
  7. @Mister Phes I believe I got over 50 comments as a critic. ;)
  8. For sure, mixing 1x1 elements in different colors, early Derfel Cadarn* style, is a way to make a wall but it's not the only way. I will use my own example - the wall is in tan only (dark tan is a window frame), breaking the regularity of bricks is done with adding various small parts into the mix. I keep this style for the whole History of Poland, just found it much better for small builds *Some tutorials by this legendary builder may be checked here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/45244184@N04/albums/72157627731013869/with/6235132237
  9. @YellowFrog I'm not sure, I don't have big experience with this type of rockwork. From what I've seen online, made by other builders, this type of wacky rockwork/landscape works if it's completely wacky - a shark, next to it elephant megablocks, upside down monster from Power Miners, some weird thing from Bionicle and so on, and so on. It's difficult to get it right.
  10. @SevenDeadlyStreamers Hah! That's a W for me. :D I guess that this show would be enjoyed by more people from this Pirate part of Eurobricks forum. After all, this is a classic, swashbuckling adventure story about a group of missfits becoming friends. It could be also a great source of inspiration, not indirectly, as in case of your build, but also directly - the world of One Piece is so colorful and filled with craziness that it would perfectly work in LEGO version.
  11. From my perspective it's often the case that all commentators have some kind of MOC in their mind and it would be impossible to please all of them at once because the version in each head is different. It's also not good if new builder focused only on following the tips from more experienced builders, loosing the opportunity to work out his own style. I'm not against providing feedback, on the contrary, I'm in favor for it. Always try to provide it in any community I'm member of. I just think that feedback shouldn't be used immediately to "improve" or "fix" current build but should be considered and - if found useful - applied in future builds.
  12. @SevenDeadlyStreamers Oh, yeah, the part limit. Not a big fan of them. :P Anyway, I think it's worth taking a change and trying what I suggested. It shouldn't increase piece count significantly. For sure, you will have to add some parts but also remove few to make place for jumper plates "below the deck".
  13. This also may be the case. Maybe we shouldn't know that, making it a mystery adds a lot to the story. :D That character reminds me of one character from One Piece. This is a story about pirates and there is chef who is an amputee. @SevenDeadlyStreamers have you read the manga or watch anime or Netflix live action adaptation?
  14. @YellowFrog Glad that we agree on that. ;) Building a wall may seem an easy task, after all we are connecting BRICKS, wall is probably the most obvious thing that we can do with them. But getting it right is not so obvious. Especially if one wants to create something with stone/brick texture. I really don't like approach that is taken by already mentioned HP sets (and by all the other sets). Creating good looking wall with defects demands usage of plenty of little parts (plates, round plats, tiles, ingots). Mixing colors is tricky and may cause very unnatural effect.
  15. Is it really a luxury? When compared to the amount of money spent on LEGO, lightbulbs costs almost nothing. It should cost a dollar or two at most. And in my opinion this helps a lot and improves presentation significantly.
  16. I don't know did I not mention the most obvious example of LEGO crane lately. :D For sure sets could be a good source of inspiration. It's good to start from design provided by LEGO and improve it. ;)
  17. @Marooned Marin I believe that there is a limit of parts that may be produced (and kept in stores) at the same time. By part I mean shape and color combination (blue 1x2 plate and red 1x2 plate are two different parts). They introduced that rule after they almost bancrupted in early 2000s. Maintaining endless number of shapes and colors must be a logistic nightmare. For some reason they add new and new shapes and colors almost every month which is a bit weird. I would rather get some already existing shapes in already existing colors. It's crazy how many basic parts are not available in colors that already exists for a decade (plates, brick modifies etc.).
  18. Well, we can have pirates in non-Carribean environment. Do we have to keep to actual pirates from history? Are pirates from fantasy worlds not allowed in this competition? If they are allowed, we can problably also have gorillas figthing tigers because why not.
  19. No problem, it's my duty to serve. When you work in IT-adjacent company, you tend to get this type of errors also in hobby related places. I was a bit confused when clicked on link and got to the topic with different ship in it. :D
  20. The story is fun because we all met this kind of government official in our life. But the build lacks detail and doesn't feel Port Royale at all. Maybe you could go even crazier and make this guy a governor of small, one man desert island? And he still follows protocols and is the biggest fan of bureaucracy?
  21. Cool idea for a build, one of the un entries to the contest. I must agree with previous comments in the topic - without the title it would be hard to get the story. Some British officer signing papers and proud parents who brought little Steve to him would be something I would start with. Next thing is the building techniques - in such a small build details are crucial, studs on the floor should be covered with tiles, I would also not use different colors in the wall in such a small build. Some playing with the texture (all in tan) should be fine but massive 1x4 log brick looks a bit odd and out of place.
  22. Nice! Another entry that looks like a set from a theme that we should be getting right now. I've read that palm tree leafs are lime but on the render they look like this new vibrant yellow shade. Nice usage of that curved panel for this sheet of material but I feel that Steve should figure out some kind of roof over the main part of the structure to get some cover from rain.
  23. This sinking, broken into two version sounds very interesting, can't wait to see it. ;) This could be interesting feature of the build, a reference to old sets with alt builds and some new one that enabled reconfiguring the model (like new Barracuda or some HP sets that are basically modular castle segments).
  24. Yummy!..? :D I like the joke you made here. My interpretation of the scene is that chef wasn't the best at his job and due to lack of skills he lost both hand while cutting some fish. :D Nice detail with the butter on the top of the crab. ;)
  25. @Horation I'm clicking on the topic name, not on the picture (checked now and the picture works correctly, topic name still leads to another topic). @MyFirstMOC-Hun Good choice with the red. Black sail would not only be dull but above all it also has dark connotations. Black sails in stories like Tristan and Iseult or slaying Minotaur by Theseus in Greek myth was a sign of death. Sails were visible from far distance and characters made a deal that black will mean failure. In both mentioned cases returning victorious hero forgot about that deal and due to misunderstanding someone died.
