Such a nice torso was choosen. I wasn't even aware that this one exists, got only the one with dark blue jacket and little green creature in the pocket. Harry Potter sets come with so many good parts for this historical era! Brickbuilt sails work perfectly here, looks like it's very windy. :D

[ENTRY][SMALL] Mini Imperial Trading Post
BardDandelion replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
Such a nice microscale build! I really like the usage of Classic Castle feathers for flags in the ship. Usage of Harry Potter printed tile is also great, it really fits here as an ornament on the sail. This is a rare example of situation when sticker would be better - these HP printed tiles do not come in white or tan if they were sticker we could apply them to tile of any color. -

BardDandelion replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
Great attention to the details in recreating them in the miniscale - blue lantern, anchor, rigging, shark. Nicely done. ;) The one thing I would like to point out is that the ship looks a bit... flat on sides. Have you considered sticking out 0.5 stud on each side? Should be possible to do with usage of jumper plates and when combined 0.5 offset on left and right you would get regular 5 studs in width. Everything from red Slope, Curved 2 x 1 x 2/3 Inverted up could be part of this wider part. -
Such an impressive build. Great color scheme, amazing details. Just epic!

[POLL] Which Prizes Do You Find Most Enticing?
BardDandelion replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I think this is very nice. Usually when I upload my build, I don't get many comments (in general, not only here, sadly seems that forums are slowly dying) or discussion about the techniques or composition. Criticing and pointing out things help everyone improving building skills. The discussion that are taking place during this competition should be regular part of every LEGO builders community. -
@Horation got it right - changing orientation of tiles should help. As was mentioned - our monkey eyes immediately notice this grid pattern and this breaks the immersion. Applies not only to tiles on the surface but also to bricks in the wall. Notice that even using masonry bricks instead of regular one generates this regular repeating pattern that should be break to get better, more natural, less boring effect.

Woah! That's a really dark build. Reminds me a bit of Sweeney Todd movie. ;) Cool idea for a Pirate build. "Hand shop" isn't something that everyone could come up with but when I see it, it fits the theme so good. Such a funny concept. :D I like the fact that the wooden floor is made with log bricks connected with SNOT but I don't like the fact that studs are visible on lower levels. Should be covered with tiles, at least at "butcher" level.

[ENTRY][LARGE] TAPU ISLAND + MEGA COMIC
BardDandelion replied to Marooned Marin's topic in Pirate MOCs
@Marooned Marin Oh, yeah, now I see this. I'm not always glad with this fancy, very specific, almost <insert that tiresome argument> parts that LEGO is constantly introducing but you proved that this big wedge from not-Ford car set may be very usefull. Its shape fits perfectly as a hull of small boat. The upgrade of color from red to dark red fits nicely with usage of PotC natives instead of classic yellow Islanders. -

BardDandelion replied to A_Goodman's topic in Pirate MOCs
@A_Goodman No problem, always here to help. ;) Making a wall is easy, making rocks is a bit harder and finally making something that should work (literally) may get really tricky. I find it helpful to find not only photos or drawings of mechanism I want to recreate with LEGO but also animations or clips showing them in movement. I remember that it was extremely helpful when I was building my "Smialy" mech from Iron Harvest/Scythe universe. This applies to all kind of vehicles, machines etc. that in real life are designed in very utilitarian way and every part of them should have some purpose. -
[ENTRY][LARGE] Origin of Steve the Merchant
BardDandelion replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
@SevenDeadlyStreamers For sure, there are plenty of new animals in these sets and this is great. If only builds (both vehicles and "jungle" surroundings follow). If you want to use them in the pirate build, remember that animals provided in 2024 summer City lineup come from Asia (tiger, red panda) and Africa (gorillas). Weird decision to mix animals from two different continents in one series but what can we do? The build that uses these animals should be based on architecture/style from these continents, not usual piratish/Carribean environment. Or maybe these could be used in some kind of Port Royale animal market/circus build? This would look awesome. :D -
For sure, "Hamilton" fits perfectly but if you ever consider making another ship, perhaps pirate ship that will go for this merchant one, you may go for "Sally Ride". This printed tile comes from the same "Woman of NASA" as "Margharet Hamilton" and "Nancy G. Roman". I think that "Sally Ride" would be a perfect name for pirate ship, for me it has similar vibe to "Jolly Roger".

Such a nice little build! This is a great example that proves that crazy amount of parts and fancy techniques are not needed to tell the great story. Here with one photo we see everything and we know and understand everything. And Steve does too - his look into the camera is an awesome detail, it's like he wants to say to us that he is screwed. :D

[ENTRY][SMALL] RAFT: The King’s Merchant + Comic book
BardDandelion replied to Marooned Marin's topic in Pirate MOCs
In general, plate is not needed to provide connection points for the barrel etc. The Technic connectors would be enough, they just need to be rotated. Should be possible to connect each "log" with axles and at the ends connect all the logs together (as it is at the moment). If you mix axle connector type 2 (these that are used now) with some other connectors of different length, you will get studs in various places. I mean not all lined up. -

BardDandelion replied to Marooned Marin's topic in Pirate MOCs
@Marooned Marin Ok, let's think about it for a moment. Do you need that 3l pin anyway? Couldn't these connectors be connected with axles only? And the Technic pin hole could be covered with round plate (stud fits into it). Or you could use 2l black technic pin. -
[ENTRY] [LARGE] - Steve's Upgraded Cutter (The Untold Story)
BardDandelion replied to Andy-Roo's topic in Pirate MOCs
Hah! Love to see behind the scene photo, now we can see and understand everything, thanks for sharing that. It's a really nice technique, if my LUG will ever go for Pirates theme diorama we will consider such solution. As I already said covering big area with brickbuilt water is crazy expensive. :( -
Such a great scene, it looks like a frame from a movie. :D No fancy techniques but composition and presentation are top notch. You perfectly captured the difference between dark dungeon and bright land of freedom behind the prison walls. And the bird outside! Haven't noticed it at the first moment but this is a perfect detail in that scene.

Ok then. :D WIP phase is a part of building process. I find it helpfull but share my WIP photos only with people who would complain and nitpick about EVERYTHING. is I know that someone will like everything I make there is no point showing them WIPs, they will congratulate me later, when it's finished and published. :D Can't wait for your new, improved builds! Good luck with them. ;)

Seen this many times but always usage of this big Technic curved panels as pieces of fabric (as sails as you did here or as tents etc.) makes me wonder - why haven't I bought them already? :D Btw, I think there is something wrong in the entries summary post - clicked on link under this entry photo and it takes me to another topic. Is it just me or some copy-paste issue took place?

[ENTRY][SMALL] Infamous Steve and the Fountain of Fortune
BardDandelion replied to Juhlhaus's topic in Pirate MOCs
The main photo is great! There are no fancy techniques in the build but you managed to create the scene that is filled with energy and movement anyway. This is not an easy task. Usage of forced perspective to create background adds a lot the the scene. Nicely done. ;) -
[ENTRY] [SMALL] The Child - Steve's childhood
BardDandelion replied to MyFirstMOC-Hun's topic in Pirate MOCs
@MyFirstMOC-Hun Oh, okay, that makes sense. Frankly, when I think about it, I'm not sure it there already are dark tan corner tiles. This my be the case why they were not allowed in that Bricklink contest. If that helps with your future builds - instead of corner tiles you could use slopes and connect them with some SNOT technique. You should be able to hide everything nicely thanks to that base and frame. Perfectly make sense with the yellow details then. Thanks for the answer. ;) -
[ENTRY][LARGE] Origin of Steve the Merchant
BardDandelion replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
Woah! This clearly is a jungle! This is how all the 2024 Summer City sets should look when combined. You should send this picture to LEGO. :P Trees designs are simple but you dedicaded to the style and I like it. There are also basically just three types of trees - regular palm trees, smaller palm trees with swordleaf leafs and big, massive trees covered with vines. Thanks to this limited number of shapes there is no chaos. Same with colors - you used only three shades of green (if I can see correct on the render) to make plants. Good job. ;) -

BardDandelion replied to MyFirstMOC-Hun's topic in Pirate MOCs
Lovely, nice, little build. Good work. If I could suggest something, it would be switching to dakr tan in this lower level of sand tiles, these that are just next to the water. It would work better as a wet sand. Is usage of only bright orange for details intentional? I mean - there is a crab, a flowers on the right and a flower on the left. All in bright orange and there are no other... beach/jungle details present in the build. -
Interesting build, reminds me a lot of stairs to Sheloba lair from LotR. Stairs themself are really nice, it's good that you make them uneven and skewed, climbing them feels like a real challange. :D Not sure about the rockwork. Parts that are not bricks or slopes seems a bit off, this is not the best incorporation of weird parts into the rockwork. Sometimes even not that wacky connections do not look natural (eg. if rockwork is mostly done with slopes but then there is some big curved wedge between them). This also often happens in microscale or in greebling in space builds. In your case shark and brick separator are a bit too obvious to spot, they stand out from the whole build.

Nice job with the roof. These new tiles work perfectly as roof tiles. Plenty of things was already mentioned but I didn't notice comments about the presentation. I think that this build would look much better if you got some kind of uniform background. I personally recommend using big paper sheets. They come in various colors and are rather cheap, for bigger builds just use two. Second thing about presentation is light. It is crazy how much may be changed in final photo if you only use different lightbulb. Your photos are a bit yellowish - usually it comes from the warm light of a bulb of too low color temperature. I find 5000-5500K lightbulbs to be the best. They provide strong, white light which in my opinion is the best for MOCs photos.

@Elephant Knight Thanks for sharing the link, I will have to take a look at this. Gosh, so many great tutorials are gathered here. The one I remember was about creating a medieval landscape and village diorama, it also was posted at least ten years ago. I agree that "Nancy G. Roman" does not sound as piratish as "Margaret Hamilton". Maybe it's because "Hamilton" fits that era in this part of the world. I mean - I'm not an American but I even know that Hamilton was among Founding Fathers of the US. This is very similar period, especially in aesthetics - British red coats, muskets, tricorns, fancy wigs.
