  1. I began to work on my 1st Technic moc yesterday to see what I could come up with. Here's my progress. I'm quite pleased with where I'm at and what I could accomplish, even if it is basic by many Technic builder standards. It drives nice on carpet, though I'd love to have those rubber dots to make it work on hard surfaces. 20170318_121559 by topazard, on Flickr 20170318_121636 by topazard, on Flickr 20170318_121659 by topazard, on Flickr Trying to figure out how to add a function will have to wait until next weekend (hopefully). By then I might have the parts to finish off the marbled top. For anyone wondering this is supposed to be a Grangemouth 3001.
  2. Would you explain why the u-joints would make it weaker? I'm trying to learn as much as I can by watching videos of peoples mocs and reading posts about how things work (or don't).
  3. Yep, about the same. I believe the width is a little different too. The 42066 jet. There's still a number of Technic sets that haven't been released in the USA yet. The bigger and more desirable ones: Jet, Cargo Ship, Track racer, and a container yard (maybe others?). We recently got the Telehandler and BMW motorcycle.
  4. I would love to build the Technic Ferrari sets, but they are hard to find and not worth the going price. The most appealing of the 2017 sets is the fighter jet, but that hasn't been released yet. The one thing that catches my eye the most is not a set. There's this Baja Truck MOC by madoca, though I don't know if my skill level is good enough to build it from the picture instructions. Plus I don't know much about these s-bricks. According to the dimensions on BL, the power puller tires appear to be about the same size as the new tires in 42054 (claas). Maybe you could piece together the set and use those tires instead?
  5. I think this depends heavily on where you live in the world. Maybe we get SW for cheaper (I don't know), but it doesn't look like Technic is anywhere near as cheap. For instance, I can go to BrickLink and pull up some sets. 42055 in Europe selling for ~$175 (means they probably got it for much less). Here it is currently on sale in regular stores (mostly online) for about $220 (MSRP = $280) 42053 in Europe selling for ~$68-80 ("see above"). Here I've only seen it on sale in regular stores (mostly online) for $118 (MSRP = $120) 42043 in Europe selling for ~$155-65 ("see above"). Here, currently on sale in regular stores (mostly online) for $212 (MSRP = $250) The majority of the USA has some form of sales tax on top of the above prices, though it's not as high as what I've seen for VAT for European countries, so I can't say if that is another factor to consider with the above pricing. You're also not going to find many USA BL stores that can sell for those prices. EDIT: I just realized that I derailed the conversation a bit. My favorite sets are 42042* and 42030 (my 1st remote controlled set). 42053 is also pretty neat as building it last week was my 1st experience with pneumatics (air powered Lego, who would have thought?). *Seriously, I would buy a few more of these if my wallet allowed for it.
  6. I apologize if this was posted to the wrong board (& I don't know how to move it where it should be). I saw this deal just before I left for class and thought it read Monday only, so I quickly ordered one, posted this and left. It appears that the deal is for the whole week, though there's no telling how long these will last, as I believe the set has been retired. I'm just debating whether or not I should buy a 3rd, so that I can build both cranes and that nice bulldozer c-model. P.S. Funny thing is that I've been hoping it would go on sale, though I only recall the occasional 20% off from TrU (except for holiday deals). It certainly made my morning awesome and hope it boosted other people's day. We just don't get these kind of deals often enough.
  7. I hope this is okay to post, as I'm running out of time before I have to leave for the day and cannot fully verify the rules. For those of us in the USA this is about as good as it gets. 42042 for about $105 plus tax at Toys R Us online (limited time). This is one of my favorite sets and I was thrilled to be able to get a second one for a good price. I hope you can snatch one up, if you've been holding out for a deal. BTW- these are nearly gone just about everywhere else for even retail.
  8. Excellent job. I hope we get this set in the states soon, as I'd like to get it and make the above mods.
  9. Does anyone know about when the USA will get the new sets: cargo ship, jet, and tracked racer (anything else)? I just noticed the BMW motorcycle and telehandler at TrU* this past week, though I don't really know the typical time-frame that we get Technic after Europe. I do recall the 24hrs race car taking really long, as that's the one that got me interested in Technic. *the only store that really stocks Technic sets locally (except for some $20 ones).
  10. It's a shame that 42066 wasn't something like this. Medium blue is nice, though I liked the dark blue better (not sure about part availability with that).
  11. That's really neat. I'd love to see detailed photos or pay a little money for instructions. I know some people that would get a kick out of this.
  12. I'm not skilled enough with Technic to be a MOC builder, so I only build the main models and 42043 is just a big truck w/ a crane. I do not see anything exciting about it to spend over $200 on (well, in actuality I did have it for about a week, but decided to return it). There are plenty of people who offer instructions to their MOCs that I'd be thrilled to build, though the cost is prohibitive. A 2000 piece MOC could cost upwards of $600 or so, whereas a Lego set with that many pieces might cost $250-300 (w/ fancy tech features).
  13. I haven't had a set with pneumatics, so I'm not sure what I would be missing if I went with 42055. There seems to be a good amount of modding on the 42055 to resolve the power issues, though the price is about double (+ extra motors / parts to fix it).
  14. For those that have built 42053 (volvo ew160) and 42055 (big bucket excavator), which one did you like the most. I would like to get one new set, though I cannot decide between these two (& no I cannot get both). Sets I have, if it helps with recommendation: 42042, 42052, 42050, 42054, 42036, 42038, 42039, 42040, 42041, 42030, 42009, (+ almost finished collecting parts for 42025). Zero interest in Arocs 42043.
  15. There's no slippery slope in this instance. You cannot sell instructions for the Millennium Falcon. Making money off of someone's IP could lead to a lawsuit (probably not very likely in this instance). However, I believe Disney is less forgiving than Lucas was.
  16. It is not the other person's original work. At what point do you draw the line in giving credit or asking permission? The original designer of the Millennium Falcon? The designer of Lego's UCS version, which gave many people inspiration to create their own? The organization that holds the IP (or maybe something further since the Falcon is such an iconic ship)? When you consider the above, then you'll realize that all Lego MOC builders that design something based on someone else's work have made the decision to draw the line at their choosing. The OP in question decided to give credit to the person that inspired them to create their version.
  17. I've never seen a helicopter like that, but it sure is nifty. Kudos!
  18. I've built it and it is a really neat MOC. The cost* of this model might make it prohibitive if building/ordering parts from scratch. I did mine over several months, little by little, while getting parts for other projects. *many pieces that run ~$2 each (avg) + red curved panels are becoming rare ($4+). Allow about $45+ for panels alone. I'm guessing it ended up around $100 total which is a nice chunk of money for a reasonably basic and non-motorized display model.
  19. Are you sure? I still haven't seen instructions for the Balisong. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough.
  20. I finally got around to building mine last night. There's a few things (colors) I'd like to change and I still need to get a black technic seat (yellow 1x2 liftarm). I began by scrapping a 42038 Arctic Truck and went from there: IMG_1453 by topazard, on Flickr IMG_1454 by topazard, on Flickr
  21. Of all the sets released and premiered for this year, there isn't a single one that I find appealing (the fire truck had so many possibilities and potential). I hope this isn't all of the sets for this year. New parts or parts in new colors is always nice though.
  22. Oh, I misread your message and got mixed up about the mods for 42054. The last I recall, someone wanted to RC the saddletrac.
  23. To re-quote what I wrote up topic, " I had a spare 42054 sorted into my bins and possibly a small amount of parts from other technic sets and need to spend about $80-90 in parts for the Saddletrac. I hope that helps you to have an idea of how much of the 42054 is used (maybe 60% as a rough guess)." *** In the USA a spare set of tires w/ wheels cost me around $45 shipped. One of my 45054's was maybe $120 plus tax and the other even less, so you can see the value of obtaining a second set relative to the cost of tires/wheels alone. Another observation from looking at BL stores in the Netherlands is that new Technic sets appear to be cheaper there than in the USA. You might find a different option that's more economical for you. *** Thinking back to this, I'm wondering if my purchase of a 3rd set of wheels was included in the $80-90 figure (making it wrong). UPDATE: My additional cost for the saddletrac was ~$65 (not $80-90). It looks like I had included the cost for a few actuators in my previous estimate, which were included in the same orders as the saddletrac parts.
  24. I'm also curious about this claw and how it works.
  25. Excellent, except for the fact that you added more gears. Per the film, gear 1 is the most appropriate for this vehicle.
