Is LEGO entering a Dark Age - or am I?
Littleworlds replied to Hive's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Ah, well. No-one in this threat said that at least. But I often encounter the attitude, that some AFOLs think they know better than the kids what they like, or should like. Nostalgia is strong and blurs the sense of reality. If I could pick how my ideal sets would look like, they would be much different from what's on the shelves right now, but I'm not going to buy tenthousands of them or more. -
Very nice! The robots are really cute and somehow look very classic space, even if most parts weren't around back then and the use of translucent pieces gives it a very sleek and high-tec feel.

Hello Benny and welcome! Your MOC looks really good. It has this lovely innocent retrofuturistic feel to it. Also brilliant what you did with the exo suit. So funny silly poses. See you around. Enjoy Eurobricks!

I think its not dramatic yet. Regarding their success, TLG has issues on a very high standard in comparison. I think sales will plateau in the traditional markets after years of massive growth. Cutting down the range of themes and merchandise is probably a wise thing to do indeed. It just became too much of everything. So many sets per year that compete for the customer's attention, more and more rapid turnovers. Reaching a peak was inevitable. I would like to see TLG reacting with less themes and a more moderate pace for releases, together with better priced sets and keeping up making interesting, innovative themes.

I think AFOLs should recognize that they are not center-stage. Its foremost a kids-toy. And a really good one. Probably the best. When I came back to Lego (not as long ago as many around here), I was so excited about the inventiveness and how far Lego has got since I looked at their sets last time. Yes, the lack of classic themes is a shame, but times are changing and interests shift. At the same time there are across the themes so many interesting sets around - and many of them even qualify as related to the classic ones (just naming the cool Ninjago Sky Pirate subtheme). Additionally there are plenty of CMFs around each wave that are a nod to us AFOLs with references to the good-ol' themes. Its all in all not that bad really. Edit: The Arctic Roller is just a brilliant car. My personal favourite of the whole Batman-Movie theme. Such a wonderful dieselpunk-freakout! -
Looks very good! Welcoming and friendly (I almost said warm and friendly, but its winter-themed!^^). I really like how you made it look modern inside without breaking with the romantic medieval-feel it has. Very well done The summer version is something I'd love to have for my castle-Minifigs (maybe without the bananas!). Just lovely

Well, the price-per-part-ratio is a criteria, as people use it obviously. Not as solitary criteria, but amongst others. Reviewers often refer to the piece-count, which mentally puts a set into a certain value-ball-park. (though I recently decided not to do it anymore). Don't get me wrong. I love good greebleing, and a huge chunk of plastic is not better than a tiny one. I would love to see the calculations they have though how much a certain set costs to produce and how these costs are broken down. ...the number of new employees is new to me and very interesting, since it puts things in relation indeed. Good to know!

I think for a good part its also the lessons learned from around the millenium, when they almost went bankrupt. Its good they start questioning things now and not when its too late. That leaves them time and resources to react and readjust things. I just feel sorry for the employees.

What's your favorite Star Wars character?
Littleworlds replied to brickmasterben11's topic in Community
What a fantastic characterisation indeed. I wholeheartedly agree! But my personal favourite is Jar Jar! Just kidding. Its the Ewoks! Nah, Its Vader, of course. See above -
I think this could indeed be possible. Also Lego had a lot of exposure in the media in recent years. And at some point things just lose their novelty-status simply. I completely agree. Especially when the layoffs happen in countries where social security isn't much a thing. Absolutely. I was going through the numbers a bit today. Revenue did increase quite dramatically in the last couple of years, until 2016. I think they reached the limit in their traditional market so far and need to cut down their portfolio to a more sensible degree. Its all just seriously over-hyped. I think we should not only look at these sets purely from the inflation-point-of-view. Today the piece-count of sets is often pushed up quite significantly with a lot of tiny decoration pieces. Our beloved cheese-wedges, for example At the same time manufacturing technology has significantly improved as well. Just look at what cars people had in the 80s and 90s, compared to today. More complex shapes, more complexity in general.

Thank you, the originals are indeed without. Phew, and I thought there was something wrong with my graphics card!

This is great! Super-silly and super-funny. First I couldn't even recognize Darth Vader... he got quite some tan on! Wonderful concept, lots of funny details - just superb! Sadly some of the pictures (especially the upper two) have some weird looking artefacts. I wonder if I am the only one who sees them. Maybe they are in a different colour space?

Not great news, but in some aspects not surprising. What rather surprises me is the extend. I think it is for a good part market saturation. TLG was growing massively in recent years, but no growth can go on indefinitely. Pricing might play a role as well. Sometimes I can't really see the value of a set for the full price. Pure fantasy... To me it also sounds like they are likely going to cut down the number of themes. Which isn't a bad thing, since with some I simply wonder why they exist in the first place. And all the merchandise-items... which leads me back to market-saturation. So far, while TLG has to do some homework, I don't think things are too dramatic yet. Its quite possible that its just a natural consequence of the immense growth the brand had. As long the brand-value itself remains high (and that it definitely is), I don't see a reason why they shouldn't be able to bounce back.

Oh nice! I would definitely get one of those too!

Very nice! Looks elegant and fast as hell. I like finding a lot of F1 design-elements in it, like the sidepods and the slim nose and air intake for the engine. Its also nice to see that the open-cockpit approach has been abandoned in the future. Good job!

Very impressive and imaginative! This is quite a beast. Hefty, but dynamic and full of character. Indeed a brilliant build.

Another highly impressive build. Angles and texturing (all that greebling!) just " click" together perfectly. It looks very much brick-built to me, btw. Especially the transparent pieces for the display stand hint at that. Or they are just very, very realistically rendered. Edit: Ok, checking your flickr-page says it is very, very realistically rendered. great work!

Welcome to Eurobricks, MingusDew. I think the early 30s are the time when a lot of us (including me) had their interest in Lego coming back again. I think its bit of nostalgia and quite some excitement involved to see how far Lego has come since. See you around!

Hello tamahandy, welcome to Eurobricks! I think someone's life took the right turn when people still buy them Lego sets when they have grown up. See you around! -
Very unusual (and pretty cool) concept with quite charming builds and characters. I like that. For an official set, I think TLG would consider it a bit "uncanny" though. Infections and body parts... even on a microscopic level

This is adorable! Lovely detailed and landscaped, with very warm colours. A beautiul build that just makes me happy.

Poor evil trolls! Very atmospheric build with indeed quite the Skyrim-vibe. The dwarven architecture is represented very well. The arches and the texturing on the stonework is very convincing. Maybe a bit clean for an outpost somewhere at the end of the world, but could be simply a show of their force. The snow covers with the icicles are looking very naturalistic as the tree does. Good job. The rocks though could do with more variation in colour. Wonderful surface texturing on them though! All in all a lovely winter scene.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I didn't really expect mixel parts, but in hindsight it makes sense. I will have a look at that. I converted my old Black Seas Barracuda into a steampunk ship, and this seems to be the natural progression for it.

This is really impressive! I love how you built the Zeppelin hull. So simple, yet the shaping and overall feel is just right. It really makes me want to try something like this as well. Would be cool if you could post a picture or two of the interior. The sail-ship gondola is very impressive as well. Brilliant shaping on it. All in all: what a MOC!
