What happened to Bricks & Pieces?
suffocation replied to kodlovag's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Same here, as mentioned above. Ordering from Italy and trying unsuccessfully to pay by credit card - no alternative since TLG has decided that customers in certain countries can't use Paypal. Not sure it's relevant but I've tried on Firefox and Chrome, Win7 and Win10. In any case, no issues whatsoever ordering from other websites. -
I dunno, dude - kids are usually smarter than adults. At least in some countries *cough* Italy *cough*

42098 - Car Transporter
suffocation replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This guy gets his kicks out of shitting on pretty much everything. Anyway, the model is ridiculously easy to motorise. I didn't buy it nor do I plan to 'cause to me it's pretty pointless - other than the red wheel arches and red tapered panels it's the same old parts yet again - so I downloaded the instructions and threw together an RC version of the tractor unit. Pics are in this topic: -

Thanks for the feedback, guys I guess the problem lies at the source - i.e. TLG - then. My B&P cart was also saved, so yes, that is a huge improvement over what we had to deal with until a few months ago - but it seems it isn't working for everyone. Kinda shocking to see a billion-dollar corporation struggle so much and so long with basic IT. -

Seems the country list issue has been solved (damn, prices for Italy are ridiculous - and next year, VAT's going up to 25%, which'll make it even worse); however, after putting in my credit card details and confirming my order, the system says the payment can't be completed. Anyone else having the same problem? -
42097 Spider Crane
suffocation replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, I'm sure kids that age know a lot about average crane stability. C'mon lads, it's a bloody children's toy. Take it for what it is and if you don't like it either leave it on the shop shelves or challenge yourselves to make it better. -
What happened to Bricks & Pieces?

No such luck in Italy. I selected "Germany" as it was the only option to get the prices in euros but when I clicked on checkout it gave me a "The page isn’t redirecting properly" error. -
What happened to Bricks & Pieces?

I got this typically canned reply on July 26th: "Thanks for getting in touch with us. I’m sorry the LEGO® Bricks and Pieces for Italy isn’t working as expected at the moment. The good news is that our IT gurus are working hard to fix the cause of this error. We expect everything to be up and running again very soon but I wouldn't have a specific date just yet. I’ve passed your feedback on to the team working on the fix because every little detail can help them resolve the issue faster. In case also you need to place a urgent order, we'll be happy to help you over the phone instead. :-) Please let us know if you need anything else. Have a lovely evening!" I mean, you have to admire the clever wording: "working hard to fix the cause of this error", which is no guarantee of fixing the actual error; and "very soon", which could be understood in astronomical terms. FTS. -
I put the "c" for "crap" in "moc", beginning with this cringe-worthy carrier. It had so much friction that high gear and low gear ran at pretty much the same speed. Prior to this, my very first try was some sort of 4x4 that turned into "let's see how many gears I can cram in here" and eventually turned into an extravagant projectile capable of little more than chipping the paint on the wall.

Marking papers was killing my brain so I took a break and rebooted this old tow truck of mine, giving it a fresh coat of paint (similar to this infant's toy) and tweaking the mechanics based on what I learnt from building this more recent tow truck. As usual, I recycled a lot of old ideas and borrowed shamelessly left right and centre. Hi-res pics can be found here.

Thank you Thank you, my friend. I'm still looking for a model I can use Tumblers with - maybe some weird, cartoonish dump truck This is cathartic - thank you Coming up before the end of the month, I hope! Ha ha, true I kept looking at it trying to figure out what didn't work and then I read your comment and realised it was the chunky head, I mean cab. I've changed it a bit now - will post new pics when I get around to shooting a video.

This is a simple off-road tow truck I built during the past month or so, recycling old ideas of mine and shamelessly pilfering other builders'. RC features: - 6x6 drive (2 XL motors) - front-wheel steering (servo motor) - locking central and rear diffs (2 M motors) Motorised features (1 L motor, 9 2-way switches): - tow arm adjustment - tow fork adjustment - rear spade outriggers - side outriggers - front winch - crane rotation - crane arm adjustment - crane arm extension - dual crane winch Other features: - live axle suspension - positive caster - Ackermann - fake 6-cylinder in-line engine - opening doors & bonnet The truck looks out of proportion and unfinished in places because I got tired of it and lack the skill to make it any less hideous. I might reboot it later this year, though, so any feedback is welcome.

I've heard this quite often and it still mystifies me - why can't a model be driven around and then have other motorised functions activated by switches, and still be fun and make sense? From a builder's point of view, you get the best of both worlds: RC drive and steering are usually more challenging than their manual counterparts, whereas an efficient distribution gearbox is usually more challenging than the typical "one motor, one function" RC approach. Furthermore, a tow truck is going to need some manual assistance in any case, unless you can somehow magically RC the winch to safely hook the stranded vehicle.
-
Not really - cramming lots of motors, typically one per function, is one thing; cramming functions driven by one motor and coming up with a transmission efficient enough to let all the functions run smoothly and even simultaneously is quite another and, in my experience, far more challenging and educational.
