Excellent point! By the way, has any of the lucky early owners had the chance to make a tentative measurement of the slippage torque of the new linear clutches? I believe the white 24-tooth gears have a nominal 2.5 N/cm slippage threshold (not sure about that number).

Where on earth did you get 30.9? The reduction is 17.87:1. And you're not accounting for torque increase.

42110 - Land Rover Defender

Wow Thank you! @nicjasno How well do the 28-tooth and 16-tooth gears mesh? I ask because, e.g., 24 & 12 are an overly tight fit (unless you use the old crown gear or the white clutch gear) and, conversely, 36 & 20 barely interlock. -

Incidentally, if you've got the set and want to play around with it you can use the BuWizz or Brick Controller 2 apps. They might not have all the "cool" stuff but then again neither did any of the IR-controlled sets released in the past 12 years. Then blame the shopkeeper, not TLG. Lego Brand stores are not the same as Lego-owned stores, so TLG can't be held accountable for their shortcomings.
-
What past? It's the first year they release sets with apps to go with them. And that doesn't change the fact that if a person (or the person's shopkeeper) knows the set's official release date is October 1st, then expecting any related software or support before that date is preposterous and indicative of a self-entitled attitude.
-
You do realise, don't you, that there is NO WAY TLG can control shipping to the extent that the sets will be deiivered to shops at the very last minute. If you don't then I suggest you come out from under that rock and get a taste of the real world before flinging mud left, right and centre. Uh, maybe because it's the only effective tool TLG has to somehow discourage pre-release sales?

Spot on, mate Still, I'll be getting the Liebherr for the parts (once I find it at a decent price) and I'm confident there'll be a "dumb" battery box for the new motors at some point. Also, the new planetary hubs from 42099 are a huge shot in the arm because the turntable-based planetary hubs never really cut it for me, especially on heavier models, and the new CV joints are a big improvement on the old ones.
-
Dude, what don't you get? The set's official release is October 1st, so you have no right to expect any related software or support whatsoever before that date. End of story.

I think you're missing Erik's point - 8043 accomplishes a lot with few parts and very little space; 42100 accomplishes little more (barring the app which, as Erik pointed out, is IT, not Lego) with four times the parts and enough space for a whole family of morbidly obese hamsters. 8043 is a showcase of creative ideas; 42100 is a showcase of parts and IT.

My thoughts exactly - it reminds me of that Liebherr excavator, the R 9800. (just ribbin' )

I'd go on gears.sariel.com and I'd gawk at the sheer amount of more efficient combinations I could use to get a reduction in the 15-to-20:1 range, even though that kind of reduction is pointless because 1) you don't need that much torque to move a model like this; 2) like all people with an IQ above freezing point, I know and understand the difference between complexity and complication; 3) the model's controlled via app, so the "gotta keep the speed down for realism" taurus guano doesn't hold water. Note: obviously the designers at TLG know how to do their job and had to resort to this kind of transmission for Thor knows how many ungodly (mostly marketing) reasons.

@Aerolight True, and if you live in England then you're likely to find it at Argos for a good 35% off. I believe they were letting 42083 go for £200 today.

Ha ha, no autocorrect (don't even have it), I just like screwing around with names Anyone remember this? Granted, it has four XLs but they're only geared down 5:1 and still have no trouble with an 8 kg model.
-
Not sure what the speed and torque stats of the new XL motors are but two PF XLs geared down 5:1 would be plenty to move that model around.
